We visited this national park and did the safari. We didn’t enjoy the experience for a few reasons. Our car worked well and took us around no problems but it was not 4x4 and the roads are really bad. I often felt the car would get stuck so felt fearful the whole trip. We asked that they cut our journey short because of this. The check in and check out process was really terrible - it took such a long time for them to decide how much to charge us despite a sign on the wall saying 10$ for tourists plus 8% VAT - they couldn’t work it out and charged us more and also for extras. This took a very long time and whilst they were working it out, the guys were taking photos of us. When the safari finished they asked us for another 1000 rupees because they had worked out the original calculation wrong. We said no and left.
Most importantly, the safari. It was not good. We saw some monkeys, deer and other common animals. We saw elephants but they were just far away.
Half way through the safari we were taken to a museum which was full of elephants which had been shot.
I feel they need to get 4x4 cars or improve the tracks, improve the entrance process, and run safaris at times when they believe you would actually see animals.

Хороший парк. Здесь вы точно увидите стаи словом, так как их тут много. Вокруг очень красивые виды природы.

Quel bonheur ! Nous devions être deux Jeeps dans tout le parc ! Le chauffeur et le garde sont très attentifs et s'arrêtent dès qu'ils voient que vous voulez prendre une photo ou juste savourer un paysage. Même si ils ne parlent pas anglais nous nous sommes compris. Ici, pas d'impact des touristes sur la faune. Les animaux sont à l'état sauvage. Inutile de les déranger en s'approchant trop prêt ! Il faut garder ce précieux écrin intact !!!! Et les "gardiens" du parc y veillent ! MERCI !!!!

Because it wasn't a touristic park yet, we thought we would see more animals, but we almost saw anything.
There are no roads yet, and we drove even through bushes, which was a bit painfull somethimes.
We expected much more of it.

Très beau safari avec des paysages magnifiques dans un univers calme. Beaucoup de buffles d'eau, de daims, d'oiseaux de diverses espèces, crocodiles. Parc réputé pour ces éléphants

Minder bekend maar heel leuk park, reden er denkelijk alleen rond, zo rustig, heel mooie uitzichten en veel dieren gespot, van allerlei vogels tot grote kuddes olifanten, waterbuffels, spotted deer... wij hadden ook een heel aangename gids.

Notre safari préféré au Sri Lanka (1 sur 3). Magnifique. Il n'y a personne. Des éléphants vraiment sauvages. Des hordes de buffles et de daims. Très joli paysage 'ouvert'.

We waren een van de weinige (nog een andere jeep). Daardoor echt het idee dat je alleen in de jungle bent. Behalve veel olifanten (ook heel dichtbij) nog krokodillen, waterbuffels, herten, vele mooie vogels. Prachtige dam midden in het park.

We enjoyed our safari ride through the park because the scenery was very beautiful, especially by the large lake. It took one hour to get there from our guest house in Maha Oya so if you are intending to do this, you need a long time. We were offered a six hour trip but we reduced it to four. Inside the park the bird life, especially by the lake, was very good indeed. We saw painted storks, a Brahmani Kite, kingfishers and numerous others. We were disappointed with the lack of large animals to see - we saw deer in a couple of places, wild buffalo and elephants that were mainly in the distance. Ironically, we had much better sightings of elephants from the jeep as we travelled along the road to and from the park. Overall we had no regrets about going as the scenery and birds were great, but it was an expensive afternoon for what we saw overall.

Went with my family and other two family friends for 2 nights. The bungalow can consists with 3 rooms can stay 12 pax. Bungalow is facing the Maduru Oya tank. You can see the dam from the bungalow.

Our host had a telephone number for a guy he used and just called and arranged for the driver to come at a set time... You need to take Cash with you to pay the fees at the Park....

I believe there is only one entrance to the park , but you would need to go with a driver really as I don't think the park supply Jeeps/ Drivers...

Hello, We are a couple with a 10 years old daugther. We plan to come the first week of January. Can we visit the park every day of the week ? I heard that they is a campsite in the park but I cannot find and information...
Also, do you know where I can find somebody who will organize a full day tour in the park. Is january a good month the visit the park ?

The park is open on all days & unless the monsoon rains give an extended run, early January will be ok .
You can get the relevant information regarding the park from the Department of Wildlife & Conservation, Sri lanka.
Safari jeeps could be arranged from nearby stopovers Polonnaruwa or Mahiyanganaya.

Hi! We are a group of 4 looking to visit Madura Oya in a week or two and I saw that you have to book the whole bungalow even if there is you are less than 10 people. is anyone able to tell me how much this would cost? Also are bedding and blankets provided? Thanks in advance for any help :)

Now it is possible to book online using Department of wildlife conservation of Sri Lanka website. Yes, you need to book the whole bungalow. Facilities are basic but not sure about blankets. Cost is 5,320.00 (one night), 9,352.00 (two nights), 13,384.00 (3 nights). Even the facilities are basic experience is unmatched in the bungalows inside the park.
Sometimes it is possible to see elephants along the public roads going across the park. But for a better experience, I recommend you to have a half day safari inside the park at least.
