Something different... The Crosby Arboretum is literally just a few miles from our house and until recently have never visited. A peaceful nature walk is the best way I can describe it. It's very inexpensive; $5 for adults and $2 for children with an extra couple dollars for turtle food, make it an easy choice compared to the high price alternatives. The map was a bit challenging at first, but we didn't get lost. Was a little surprised to see (other than the pond fed turtles) not a single bird, reptile, nothing... The had a butterfly attraction, but there were more bees than butterflies. Overall, it was a nice hike on a beautiful day...

Nice place to walk and see Mississippi nature like swamps, and ponds. We saw a huge snake, tons of turtles and several pitcher plants. There is a $5 per person entry fee and there is a charge for turtle & Fish food if u have kids with you.

If you are looking for a place to get "back to nature" for a few hours, check out the Crosby Arboretum. There are several paths you can hike and signs describing the various types of trees and plants that you are seeing. For $5 or less per person it is a great value. We had the pleasure of meeting Terry Johnson and his wife, Julie. Terry takes care of the entire property and his passion for his work is infectious. We took this short road trip on a day when the weather was sunny and cool. There are small areas where you can sit but you have to be physically fit to walk the trails. Not sure if bringing food for a picnic is allowed. It would probably get super hot in the summer, although there are shaded areas. It would also not be good to go if there is severe weather. There is bathroom access and a water cooler at the office. When you check in you will get a little package of turtle food, which you can use when you get to the Pavilion. The turtles in the pond will come right up for a snack.

This was so much bigger than I expected and so much prettier in person! Gorgeous setting to experience and appreciate nature. We saw pitcher plants, butterflies, turtles, bees, and even the hugest spiders! Perfect for children, couples etc. There is even a children’s garden. Beautiful settings for events or class learning even.

My wife and I have been taking our 9-year old grandson for morning walks at the Arboretum several days each week while he's visiting with us this summer (but NOT on Mon. and Tue. when they're closed). There is plenty of shade, which is the only reason to brave the heat and humidity for a walk in July in south Mississippi! Beautifully maintained trails (we walk a two mile loop and barely cover any of the same ground twice), a beautiful large pond where we enjoy feeding the fish and turtles with fish food provided by the Arboretum, a smaller "gum" pond, friendly staff, birds (very often a catbird greets us along our walk), friendly staff willing to answer any questions -- all reasons to visit the Arboretum. As local residents the annual family membership is a great value. Not only does it provide a great place to walk (even better in the less hot and humid non-summer months), membership also gets you access to affiliated gardens around the country. Don't expect a well-manicured garden here--this is Gulf Coastal Plain forest with some very interesting lowland bogs which include insect eating-plants, such as pitcher plants. You can find peace and quiet along portions of the trail, but other portions are not there far from the interstate, so expect quite a bit of highway noise in certain spots, even though it will look like you're deep in the woods. My only complaint: I wish they were open earlier and later than the 9-5 hours (last admission is at 4:00). An early evening walk would be nice. As a local Picayune resident, I'd say this is our premier attraction.

This Arboretum is world renowned for its indigenous plantings in south MS and LA. Great events held and a great asset of learning to our young people as well as a senior citizens.

Let's be clear here - it's a walk (not a hike) through a very interesting southern landscape that has great botanical signage and terrific helpful staff in the headquarters/gift shop. If you walk the entire property, it's likely around 2 miles - but allow plenty of time for reading the signs and appreciating the landscape. Recommend checking the web site to determine when stuff is in bloom.
It is exactly an hour from New Orleans Uptown.

This is a work in progress. It is always being improved and most of the work is done by volunteers. If you're a mall rat you probably wouldn't enjoy it, but if you have a love for the outdoors it is very nice.

This is a wonderful place to take a stroll and enjoy the beauty of nature. The trails are well marked and there's lots to see. You can even feed the turtles! The Arboretum has speakers and special events for families and children, guided nature walks and lots of information about local plants and animals. AND..like many attractions, there's a gift shop. What's different about this one is that the majority of items are very reasonably priced. I some puppets for the grandchildren and slices of trees that we could stamp and use as Christmas ornaments. So check out the wonders of nature -relax and enjoy!

We enjoyed our visit here (not easy with picky teenagers). My teens really liked feeding the turtles. The pavilion is remarkable from its every viewpoint in the park. This is definitely a relaxing hidden treasure.
