After doing the Wisconsin side earlier in the year, I returned when coming through the area to do the Minnesota side. The potholes are more impressive on the Minnesota side. However, I think the Wisconsin side is prettier with better trails. On the Minnesota wide, you are constantly battling the highway noise. There are trails on the Minnesota side that abut the highway and cross underneath it, and there are some pretty views. While I realize which park you visit may have largely to do with which state park sticker you have on your car, each side is worth a visit. I just prefer the Wisco side if I could choose.

There was no key on the map to determine the length of the trail but I headed out to see the glacial potholes. The area was not as big as I'd imagined. I spent time sketching the potholes, appreciating the river and trees, watching the paddle wheel boat tour go by and listening to their commentary and watching a climber repel. Lovely time at the park.

Small but decent campground, beautiful area with breathtaking views. Down side was the rangers in the campground were overly agressive in enforcing rules - they seemed especially strict about how and where park stickers were placed. In the 20 + years I've been camping I've never felt so "watched". It made the weekend much less enjoyable. By the way, we did have a valid sticker and it was in the correct location on my vehicle.

The potholes are cool and the park is nice, but I'd avoid the other hikes. They are so close to the highway, and therefore so loud that it's hard to enjoy them. The kayaking is great too.

I visited Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls on a fine day in August. Note: There is also another Interstate State Park adjacent to the one in Minnesota on the other side of the St. Croix river. I was amazed at how wonderful this state park (Minnesota) is. There are many interesting geologic features such as the glacial potholes, huge rock formations, and river rapids. The place abounds with scenic views at every point. Hiking/walking is exciting everywhere. Display boards are very informative, and the trails are well marked. The Sandstone Bluffs Trail will give a workout due to the hills, but stairs help in making steady progress. In sum, Interstate State Park is a beautiful park with interesting geologic features.

The trails on the Minnesota side were easily accessible and easy to follow. There is plenty of options for those wanting a more strenuous hike and those with small kiddos that want a shorter hike. You can do it in a day or even half and many spots to stop and check out the river. Plenty of space and locations for a light lunch or snack. There are not many bathrooms along the routes so be prepared. And bring your water!

The campground was nice, despite heavy rain. Showers were good. The potholes hike was great. The Ice Age Trail movie at the Nature Center was excellent, and the hosts were very nice and helpful. We had a great time hiking and enjoying the beauty of the Dalles.

Beautiful scenery at Interstate State Park where the St Croix River narrows through a spectacular gorge known as the Dalles of the St Croix. Many nice hiking trails including the River Trail can be found or walk the paths amongst the rocks near the gorge. There is a paddle wheel boat that makes excursions down the river every couple hours or even better you can rent kayaks or canoes from Taylor’s Falls Canoe and Kayak and paddle down to Osceola or John O’Brien State Park where a bus will bring you pack to where you started.

Beautiful scenery. Knowledgeable guide on the geology. Bring your food for a picnic, as the visitor center is small and does not sell food. We did not take the river cruise, but may be worth checkout out.

The views were great, and we enjoyed learning about the geological features of the park. Nice places to walk, though one of the trails is right next to the main road. Definitely recommend.

You would need a MN State Parks vehicle pass to enter the park, but it does not appear as if you’d need to have camped to pull through the dump station.

I would call the interpretative center before going. Spring can be a time of fluid change. They can tell what is blooming and if the snow has melted.

We plan to bring grandma with us and she's not up for too much walking and doesn't do stairs. Is there an easy, flat, short trail that will still allow us to see a pothole or two?

Yes. The trail right outside the visitor center should be okay for her. My Mom is 67 and did all the trails. Even a bit of rock climbing (bouldering) too!

A non-refundable reservation fee ($10.00 for call center/$8.50 for web) is charged for each reservation. This fee and camping fees for the entire length of stay must be paid when the reservation is made.

We plan to take our 2 year old and the stroller any ideas if they have stroller accessible trails and where would you go to keep them entertained?

There are just a few paved trails a short distance from the top of the trails, but you could also walk down to the river on the parking lot Road. There isn't very far to go though.
