Hubs thought he remembered going here as a kid but turns out it was the park in town. We appreciated the boardwalks from the parking lot to the beach. It is a beautiful season to walk the beach. It runs for for maybe 1/2 mile and part is for dogs too. It wasn't very busy and was lovely to hear the waves lapping on shore!

My visit was a day visit so I cannot comment on the campground, which is not on the beach side of the road. There are no campsites with direct beach access, so campers must cross a highway or take a bridge over the highway to get to the beach. That being said, the beach was gorgeous. Yes, some access points to the beach are closed due to erosion caused by rising levels of the Great Lakes. Keep looking as other access points ARE open.

Most sites are pretty level. They are a bit smaller than parks like Pontiac Lake. Most sites are nicely shaded. The showers in the west loop are newer and nicer. The east loop showers are in the restrooms themselves. The campsites are quite close to M-25 but traffic is normally pretty light. There are plenty of public park beaches along M-25. Many have very nice sand and drop off very slowly. The lake levels are high right now which means the beaches are much narrower than normal. There are a number of geocache sites within a short drive. There some nice unimproved roads through the woods nearby if you have a vehicle that is suitable.

This campground is typical of many in Michigan, nice trees, grassy spots and electrical (only) hook ups. Many of the sites are small, designed well before the age of huge 5th wheels, long travel trailers and Class A motor homes so plan on being close to your neighbors. The roads are narrow, and people tend to park very close to the road, so you better bring your "A" game for backing into tight spots. Bathrooms on the South end were handicapped accessible and newer and nicer than the North end which has the old style facility. I know they have to clean them, but to close them from 6:00 am to 8:00 am,,,,,a time when they would be heavily used seems like poor timing. We watched as dozens of people were turned away in the morning. Meanwhile the park empties out in the afternoon as people go to the beach. That would seem to be a better time to close for cleaning.

Rather small sites (but I guess average for MI state parks), heavily treed (which was wonderful because it was so hot out!), lovely sandy beach, though much diminished by high waters in lake. Travelled up to Port Crescent to find their dog park, but never could find it. Sleeper has a portion of beach where dogs are permitted, but on 6' leash. Hard to have a lot of fun, but it was also very crowded by non dog-owners. Not much presence of camp staff, which meant people seemed to want to share their music and I like to hear nature when I camp! No beach access for handicapped. There is a look-out at beach house, but you can't get down to beach itself.

Sleeper State Park is very pretty - was a bit chilly towards the end of September so a little limited on the lake access but beautiful. Only down side is that the road is very close to the one side of the park. If noisy vehicles bother you, probably not a good place to stay. We had a camper, so no biggie. Decent sized sites and clean bathrooms.

As to the park itself, it is a very quiet park within walking distance to the beach which is still part of Saginaw Bay. The restrooms/showers in the West campground are immaculate! It seems to have been recently renovated. Although I was told the restrooms in the East campground were “more rustic”. Take that as you like. As is more common now, the showers are separated from the restrooms and in their own rooms. The park is clean and the rangers are friendly and helpful. The walk to the beach is short and has an overhead bridge to access it without having to cross the highway. Although there was so little traffic we just walked across the street itself. We were there at the end of August and it was probably not even a third full. We didn't like the drinking water at all. It was quiet and very scenic.

Good enough for the area. Site was big enough and showers are nice (all the same at each state park). Wish they had more thing to do. Nearby THUMB Brewery is a nice place to visit for a tasting. Don't miss going to see the ancient PETROGLYPHS about half an hour away, as they are historic. Be careful and cross the road with the pedestrian bridge to the lake. You can drive an hour away to FRANKENMOUTH town to see all the xmas holiday stores there which many find entertaining. Last note there is a nearby lighthouse to see so be sure to drive to that. Note as with all state parks you need the RECREATION PASSPORT sticker which is $33 for out of state per year ($9 for single use) and well worth the cost to support state parks.

This was our second year. We were shocked to see how much the beach eroded from last year! The walk to the water ended up being fairly step as a result. My youngest needed her hand held on the way down to avoid falling. I noticed some adults falling as they tried to make their way back up. Also it made the beach more crowded because there was just less beach to go around. However our last day we went down at 9am and had the entire place to ourselves for a while. Just a caution, that one day we were briefly walking along a part of the Western shore near some dune grass and my daughter got a tick on her. Another lady told me that she got a tick on her while on the beach. So I recommend not parking your blanket near the grasses.

Park is kept very clean. The bathroom and showers were very clean. Staff is friendly. Beach is across the road over the pedestrian bridge. Sites are nice but we noted that some got puddles in the heavy rain. Our site was listed as having grass but it really didn't have much beyond a few VERY thin patches. The center of the west campground had the grass and sun. Outer rings on the west side are more shaded. I always find it is easier to book a campsite here even if I'm last minute which is nice. Playground on our side had swings (one of the four was missing though), a sandbox, and horseshoes. Nice bench to sit on while watching the kids.

Overall a nice state park. Hope the beach comes back!
