I went on a 4pm tour today, Friday June 28th 2024 with my grandson. The handsome young man giving the tour was very kind, polite, professional and so very knowledgeable. He definitely knew history and would make an awsome history teacher. He made the tour fun and exciting and it was very clear that he loved history and truly enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others.
Thank you so very much and a wonderful afternoon tour.

I was disappointed this visit. I have been a few times now and the changes are not for the better. It is no longer run by the Surratt society but by {Prince George county. I have no problem with the aspect of slavery being presented; it was a part of history. But the place has definitely lost its charm. The docents used to wear period costume and the gift shop supported local authors - privately printed books you can't get anywhere else. Now it was a small room with the normal over-priced books I can get on Amazon. The tour was good enough; it is an interesting site. I do wish the tour guide had pointed out and explained the artifacts in the rooms - though few were original to the house. If you know about house and its place in history, you know everything that was told. Which is a bit of a disappointment.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed with my tour here. While the site is very historic, the tour lacked entertainment and information. Instead of talking about all of the interesting facts about the life of Mary Surratt and her role in the Lincoln assassination, the tour was heavily focused on slavery. Literally, every room had a story about a former slave, which was important information, but not what I wanted to hear about room after room. The tour barely covered Booth, the assassination, and the end of Mary's life.

Docent Bryan (with a “y”) gave a very historical review of the time period that the surratt house represented. Though JW Booth had minimal presence here, it’s truly that as their fame to claim. Slaves’ lives were part of each room. The visicenter has a small gift shop and a “clue” room after touring the property. Bathrooms are on the second floor of the surratt house. Picnic tables are on sight. Property is in a very developed intersection.

The house and tour are absolutely fantastic! It is so special to get to see such a historically relevant place and experience it come alive around you. Logan was a wonderful and informative guide and everyone should make a stop at the Surratt House Museum!

For any history buff this is a must stop. I thoroughly enjoyed touring the surratt tavern that was such a crucial stop on booths escape route. The tour guide had more knowledge of the site then any other tour guide I have ever had. He was a treasure trove of info.

I live less than 20 miles from the Surratt House Museum and figured it was time to visit so I drove up there last weekend. The house and site overall is well-maintained. A few pieces inside the house are original to the Surratt family's time there. My guide was William and I thought he was excellent. Dressed in period costume, he was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I enjoyed when he shared the uses of miscellaneous tools/pieces in the kitchen and dining room. I've visited numerous historic houses around the country, but continue to be surprised/amused by the intended purpose of some tools/utensils I've never seen before. I thought it was a nice tour and it actually lasted a good hour. I felt that I got my money's worth.

My husband and I took the Booth Escape Tour today with Bob and Bill, docents at the Surratt Museum in Clinton. The tour itself is offered on a very limited basis, during the month of April and again in the fall. Call the Surratt House for details. The
cost today, was $85. each which included an escorted bus trip which lasted for twelve hours! We left the Surratt House at 7:15 a.m. and returned at 7:15 p.m.! I was a little worried about the length of the tour but both Bob and Bill were extremely knowledgeable and kept us engaged and interested throughout the day. The day went quickly. The tour leaves the Surratt House for DC where you tour the Ford Theater and the Petersen House, across the street where lincoln was taken and died the next morning. From there you follow Booth’s escape route which leads back to Maryland and into Virginia, stopping at the various sites where he stopped for assistance as he attempted to escape to Virginia and safety. I think the information provided covered everything from Booth’s mental stability, to his family ties, confederacy links and so much more. Don’t worry about remembering all the historical details as you are given a very nice, professionally done, handbook of all the information covered at the beginning of the trip. For lunch we stopped at a seafood restaurant on the water which was very good. (Not included in tour.) A great tour and wonderful experience! Call the Surratt House Museum at 301-868-1121 for more information. These tours sell out quickly so be sure to call in early January.

Thanks so much for your lovely response, Linda! We are so glad you shared your experience; we know 12 hours can seem a little daunting and it's great to hear how much you enjoyed your time. We'll be sure to pass along kudos to Bob & Bill!
