Small stop and memorial with historical plaques and descriptions of the efforts of the local community. If stopping to see Bug Lighthouse, walk over and check it out!

Nice, but out of place at the park

Part of the Bug Light park area and it just seemed a little out of place. It was interesting to look at and read about, but if I hadn’t happened to see it, I would’ve never even noticed it. It’s just kind of at the end of the park, by garbage cans. Just odd placement for a memorial.

Great testimony of what happened here in the 1940s

Next to the Bug Light Park stands a this memorial to the shipyards that produced Liberty Ships during World War II. This memorial comes with a lot of interesting historical information on what happened in the 1940s. I learned a few things that I didn't know (from my European perspective on what happened 80 years ago), and I definitely recommend a stop at this place. As a side note, the memorial (and the Bug Light Park close to it) has a free parking.

Amazing History

The historical information was informative. It was sobering to see photos of the men and women who worked on navy and battle ships during WWII.

One of South Portland's landmarks.

This metal silhouette memorial is a wonderful tribute to the 30,000 people who contributed to the World War II effort. There were 236 liberty ships built in the South Portland shipyard. It's a striking structure to see, in a beautiful waterfront park with a gem of a little lighthouse known as 'Bug Light' and views of several islands and the Portland waterfront.

Great memorial

This was a beautiful memorial sculpture that we happened to find accidentally while visiting Bug Light. It was magnificent and really livened up the surrounding park.

A Lesson in Local History and World History

It’s impossible to miss this almost abstract ship’s hull structure. It was beside the parking area for Portland Breakwater Lighthouse and Bug Light Park. It commemorated the dozens of cargo ships built in shipyards here during World War II. The interpretive displays helped bring alive the connections between local history and world history. It was well worth a visit, particularly for history enthusiasts. I appreciated all that I found here; I disliked nothing.

Found this memorial by accident when visiting Bug Light. Nice structure with several boards highlighting South Portland's history with ship building. Was a great little distraction that I wasn't expecting. Definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Unique but not cleared of snow.
