Old monastery is very pretty with murals and paintings. There's a monastery shop next to the old monastery which has nice souvenirs. It's open till 5pm. New monastery was closed when we went. There are 3 shops in the compound. The middle shop has nice souvenirs. The first shop towards the old monastery with the masks is a rip off. She quotes 5x the price and is rude.

Tabo is a small village with old and new monasteries. In the old monastery, you can see old paintings around 1000 years old. No photos are permitted. You can see it with the torch they provide.

A serene, tranquil calming experience at this small town, approximately a 1.5 hour drive from Kaza town. Hence try leaving early or else spend a few night here, you will find a few hotels or homestays.
We had a very unique experience at this particular Monastery, the monks showed us around and toke us inside and gave a wholesome information about the monastery.

The land of monks, a land of monasteries where you can find the inner peace of life.
While going Sangla to Dhankar, tabo is a beautiful village surrounded by the spitian landscape and mountains and ancient monasteries as well as gumpha.
In the Tibetan year of the Fire Ape, this monastery has been founded.
Enjoy local homestay, food and beauty of the nature.

This monastery houses paintings that are more than 1000 years old! At its peak, scholars from Tibet and India would meet at the monastery to exchange their knowledge about Buddhist here. Depicting various forms of Buddha, it was intriguing to note that lord Ganesh adorns the entrance of this monastery. They have also a built a new monastery which has many Buddhist quotes and sayings. The people of the monastery are very knowledgeable and answered our questions about Buddha, compassion and love. The monastery has a little shop with souvenirs. They have the most unique items on sale. Don't miss out shopping at the little store.

Very recently during my early June’19 visit to Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, it was my privilege to visit this great monastery. Situated at a height of ~3,000mts. I have no hesitation in accepting my lack of knowledge about this wonderful heritage of our country. Established in 996 CE its unique painting and murals took my breath away. The old enclosure of the monastery is a must see for one and all, because there is no parallel to the magnificent painting and murals on the walls. Hundreds of painting describing various aspects of the Life of Buddha. Painted with only naturally occurring natural dyes and pigments itself mark it uniqueness. The dark alley for walking around the deity had no light [No electricity till date] and painting were drawn in the light of the burning oil lamps. One can view the paintings and statues with the help of a torch provided on request. No photography is allowed and even mobile phone is not allowed. I spend nearly an hour just to get a glimpse and wished all the while for more time. The entry and timing is restricted. Condition of dyes and pigments are still quite amazingly excellent barring a few which show signs of deterioration. The finesse of the work can match the work of Ajanta. It primarily belongs to two distinct period, one in around 700 AD and second ones around 16-17th century??
Even the calmness of the complex made me offer my prayers to achieve overall peace for all human, animal and plant lives.
There is no entry fee. The monastery depends on donations and they sell posters/postcards etc. for raising money to help Spitian children.
The structure and statues are made of mud-bricks and/or wood.
I can only wish that more interested tourists from India and abroad visit this monastery and help its cause with willful donations.
The outer and later period complex is nicely preserved and in tune with the earlier architecture. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

However the colourful new monastery is a contrast to the muddy plain look of the older monastery. Both have very different looks and both are equally interesting. I would suggest to take a local guide see the older one to learn the history too, I was fascinated by the older one more.

Hi
I am planning a trip to lahaul-spiti region in june
1. Is this the right time to visit
2. i will need directions and modes of travel from delhi
3. I will be travelling alone and plan to backpack and stay depending on the availability. Not planning a strictly timed journey, with an outer limit of about 10 days. Would that be sufficient
4. I would like to know what all I need to be aware of while travelling keeping in mind that this will be a strictly budget trip
