We decided to go on a last minute camping trip for 2 days.
Do the park entry on ecitizen before you go as trying to upload excel spreadsheets etc at the gate on your phone could be problematic!
Once at the gate the KWS rangers could not be more welcoming or helpful and entry was easy.
There is really only one road in the park so game drives are not really an option. But the road is very good and well maintained.
Driving through the forest to the first lake Crater Lake is beautiful, with stunning forest and lots of signs of elephant activity.
The old lodge at the first lake is sad to see, all falling down and abandoned, views across the lake are stunning with buffalo, bushbuck and amazing waterbirds in large numbers.
Arriving at lake Paradise it was not clear where the special campsite was located but we just drove along the lake shore until we found a nice spot and set up camp.
There were buffalo, bush buck and grevys zebra across the lake and again the water birds were stunning.
Heading into the southern section of the park there is obviously a huge amount of illegal grazing going on and KWS were there one day pushing the cattle back from the forest.
It is a very special little place with incredible birds of prey sightings and amazing water birds.
100% worth the trip if you are happy to just sit quietly in a forest glade of by the lake shore and watch the world go by.
You need to carry water for washing and drinking, firewood is available to collect in the forest.
Easy 5 hour drive on a good road from Nanyuki and there is a fantastic supermarket at the Total petrol station in Marsabit town

This is a breathtaking mountain oasis in the middle of the desert. From semi desert to afromontane rainforest, this national park offers some of the most diverse habitats and breathtaking scenery in Kenya. In just a few hours of afternoon safari, we saw elephants, buffaloes, grevy's zebras, bushbucks, olive baboons, duikers, kudus (greater and lesser) and many more, despite visiting only the highest peaks of the park. Birdlife is even more outstanding, with forest, savanah, desert and freshwater species all concentrated in little areas. The potential of this park is enormous, BUT official control is insufficient. We saw big herds of camels, cattle, even signs of illegal logging in the middle of the park. I suspect poaching is still taking place there occasionally. Also, just next to the most beautiful crater lake, there is an old, decrepidated, non functioning lodge, which, properly managed, could easily rival The Ark from Aberdares or some other high-end Mt. Kenya lodge. But at the moment, it only represents an ugly relic from better times of this park.
With proper management, this park could easily rival the best parks of Kenya and also attract much more turist than it does now.

We spent 5 days in the Marsabit national park. In the park, we found that the landscape was very fine with preserved lush and dense forest.
We got into the park through the main entrance “Ahmed gate”. We learned that Ahmed was an elephant nicknamed the King of Marsabit, because he had huge tusks. It was declared a national treasure by President Jomo Kenyatta, and underwent permanent protection (by presidential decree) until his death in 1974. A life-size reproduction of the elephant Ahmed can be seen in the Kenya national museum in Nairobi.
In Marsabit national park, we saw the 3 beautiful crater lakes, including the famous Lake Paradise; there are also singing wells. We made great full day game drive, allowing us to see:
- herds of elephants with playful babies !!!
- spotted hyenas, a blakk serval cat
- other mammals, such as Grevy zebras, bushbucks, greater kuddus, herds of buffaloes
- and a lot of many birds.
We also made walking tours with a Turkana native friendly ranger with high level of knowledge on local wild fauna.
Taken together, I highly recommend to visit Marsabit national park !!!

Far to the north of Kenya, lies the Marsabit National Park. It is a densely forested mountain having three crater lakes in it. It is an oasis of green in this arid, desert region of Kenya. The lakes provide a haven for a variety of birdlife, mammals and reptiles. The park is known for its huge, impressive tusked-elephants. However, this national park is not much known for game-drives. If you are heading up to Lake Turkana, this acts as an interesting site to spend a night in. We reached Marsabit National Park at around 5.30 PM, soon after which it became dark

Spotted a hyenas in the first meters after the entrance gate, afyerwards we couldn't catch anymore animals during the visit. The view on Lake Paradise is amazing, but the entire park is not attractive as other ones in Kenya

I visited Marsabit National Park with my friends as part of a tour of Marsabit County. The road network within the park is poor following heavy rains, and trucks involved in dam construction creating huge troughs on the dirt roads. We had to turn back halfway through our trip to Lake Paradise :(
We were however able to see the beautiful lake next to Marsabit Lodge, which is abandoned and dilapidated.

Marsabit National Park in northern Kenya is near, of course, the town of Marsabit
If you get as far as this, you must see the extinct volcanic craters known as Gofs. Gof Sokorte Guda is the largest one and at the bottom of it there is a lovely lake with a meaningful name: Paradise Lake.
Oh, the famous Ahmed, the elephant that was famous for his very long tusks and 24 h protection, lived here.
The Park is an extremely dense wooded area so animal spotting isn’t easy. We have seen Grey’s zebras and buffaloes but we were unlucky with Colobus monkeys which live in Marsabit National Park though I would prefer to be able to confirm it and say that I have seen them with my own eyes.
The same goes for Reticulated Giraffe or lion or leopard, I’ve seen many but none here.
So the question is if I should at all mention them in the context of Marsabit National Park.

We were the only ones staying here hoping to see wildlife at the lake. Just 2 token buffalo apparently is all that ventures here now. So don't expect much here.
However The worst thing of all was the condition of the rooms. Cockroaches, numerous other bugs, crawling around and mosquitos splattered on the walls and furniture. The shower is positively disgusting and they will instructions on how to use the hot water so ended up with only a cold shower.
The the cost positively outrageous on top of the entrance free for this 1 star accommodation.
The food was very simple but not cooked well and made us ill. Don't stay here unless you want to waste money and get a lousy service.
