It was so peaceful, calm and quiet. Best place for meditation. Many Buddha statues to see and take pictures. You can spend between 15 - 30mins at this location.

For me, there was the biggest temple I met. Upper balcony had a great view to city and the cafe is recommended for its delicious local drinks with acceptable prices.

This is one of the MUST SEE sights in Batm. Almost all tour agents include this in their progamme. This is likely there are few sights in Batam. The Bulidling itself is Impressive and NEW and well maintained. The interior and exterior are very clean, with lots of parkings space for both the cars and tourists buses. There lots of carvings around, and many Deities for the Devotees to pay their respect and pray for their wishes !!! There is a vegan restaurant and offer vegan food at very reasonable prices !!! There is also a tourists selling all types of items; BUT The prices are MUCH higher than those obtainable from outside !!! Nice place for a break and a taste for vegan food !!!

According to my tour guide, this temple is the largest of its kind in South East Asia. But when I was there, my feeling is that our Singapore Phor Kar See Temple seem bigger than this.
We were given about 15 minutes to explore this attraction. At the back of my memory, I remember coming to this temple many years back. Batam seem to have changed much in terms of infrastructure development. The Sekupang and Batam Center ferry terminals are so different now with modern and developed pier facilities, shops, car parks and immigration counters. At the Singapore Cruise Center Departure hall, I was shocked to see the alarming swarm of Singaporeans queuing at the immigration lanes departing for Batam for a short weekend vacation.
I am not sure why the tour guide made this temple as the first attraction for us to visit. But I supposed it is in every traveler's mind to pray for a smooth and safe journey when you are in a foreign land. In Buddhist scriptures, the future world will be ruled by the Maitreya Buddha (Laughing Buddha) who shall bring peace and prosperity to this world.
The first thing that attracted me at this temple were the 12 zodiac animals sculptures that were erected beside the car park. They look cute to me especially the monkey and pig statues.
The temple is divided into 3 main chambers each dominated by a God. Both the Kwan Yin and Kwan Gong chambers are situated by the right and left side of the main Buddha chamber. The statues of the gods seem to be gold plated and look so glittering and magnificent.
Our tour guide told us that every Indonesian must declare himself the religious affiliation he believes. He must declare if his religion is Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism or if he is a Catholic. In Indonesia, you cannot declare that you are a Free Thinker.
In Batam, there are mosques, churches, Buddhist, Hindu and Taoist temples. There is also a Cheng Ho mosque that looks like a Chinese temple.
The Kwan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) and the Kwan Gong Gods are much respected and worshiped in temples because they represent the values of Benevolence, kindness and Justice while Buddha represents the universal love for every living being and the wheel of the Dharma.
I went to the rear of the temple to visit the vegetarian restaurant and saw the vegetarian buffet dishes that were sold. I understand that many Singaporeans came to Batam to make charitable donations to quite many temples in Batam and this is one of those temples that benefits greatly from the donations of Singaporeans.
When Singapore prospers, we did not forget our immediate neighbors. Batam is now the third largest city in Indonesia with a population of 1.7 million. Tourism and manufacturing from Singapore bring job opportunities to Batam and contribute to the economic prosperity of the Riau Archipelago.
And with the blessing of this Maitreya Buddha, may peace and prosperity continue to thrive so as to bring luck and happiness to this part of the world.
