This place really gave me so much peace! I saw a double rainbow while I was there. I really enjoyed the interactive Amelia Island app that guides you through the island. I came down for the history of American Beach it truly is a beautiful place with awesome black history. Please visit if you like relaxing beaches with rich history!!

Best beach!! Good history and everything, I suggest you come back, or come here. The only thing that is wrong is the tides, they are mainly high.

I thought it was great to drive on the beach and park right near the water. The kids enjoyed the water, even though it was rough waves every now and then. They will turn you away unless you are a Nassau resident or dod emp.

In our third visit to Amelia Island, we found the historic area known as “American Beach.” It is 8 miles southeast from the historic downtown. This area was developed in 1935 by the first black millionaire, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, who was president of the Afro-American Insurance Company. In the time of segregation, The American Beach was for African Americans for “Recreation and Relaxation Without Humiliation.” Many people would come up from Jacksonville to use this beach.

Arguably, the center of the area is Evan’s Rendezvous, a two storied nightclub that featured such musicians as Ray Charles and famous celebrities as Joe Louis and Hank Aaron. The Rendezvous is closed. Hopefully, it can be restored someday.

Across from the Rendezvous are the highest dunes in Florida. Along the side road are a few historic plaques.

A beach opening is next to the Rendezvous. Cars can actually ride along the beach like they do in Daytona. However, only local people with ID’s are allowed to drive on the beach. A friendly guard is at the gate to make sure. There is parking across the road for us tourists. A larger public facility is just down the road going south.

There are a number of older homes dating back to the 1930’s in the area. Newer and wealthier beach houses are beginning to take-over.

Along Julia Street is the good-looking building that features American Beach Museum dedicated to the history of the African American beach. We visited on a Sunday and it was closed. A sign stated that the museum is in transition celebrating its founder, Abraham Lincoln Lewis.

Was driving around, on our way to grab a bite to eat & landed on this historic piece of beach & land. So nice to see some of it still there but looks like they are trying to take over & redevelop the area as there were signs that were saying "Say no to CRA" (Community Redevelopment Agency". It was great reading all the signs & learning this history. Hope it stays for history sake.

There have been a few changes at American Beach in the past year or so. The Pavilion has seen a new roof and paint job and the boardwalk to the beach has been repaired, Also a mat for wheelchair access has been added to the end of the boardwalk through the last dunes to the beach. The problem with the mat is that thw wind and shifting dunes cover some of the mat making it difficult for a wheelchair to get through. Since this is February and out of season, I surmize that the mat will be maintained once the season begins.
The beach itself is pretty much the same and is delightful.

I recently attended a conference on Jekyll Island and had the opportunity, as an excursion, to accompany a colleague to Nassau County FL, just across the border. Our purpose was to visit a site that is very important in African-American history; since most (if not all) of the beaches in the area were segregated, they ended up being the only places that African-Americans could enjoy water sports and other activities we take for granted.

To steal a brief description from Wikipedia: "American Beach was the largest and most popular of these, and was a community established by Abraham Lincoln Lewis, Florida's first black millionaire and president of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company. It contains American Beach Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002."

Fast forward 85 years from its founding year of 1935, and this community finds itself threatened from all sides. Multimillion-dollar hotels, condominiums, and homes are encroaching on and replacing the modest, originally black-owned homes in the community, and development along the highway to the west is also squeezing the area.

There is currently a movement to keep this historical location from being privatized, which includes allowing the continued issuance camping and driving permits in the area, which go all the way back to the beach's founding. It would be a terrible shame for the public to lose this piece of important history. Until last week, I never even knew it existed. It is a beautiful, fascinating place, and while we were there, we met with some of the campers and learned the details of this insidious effort. They asked us if we could help make people aware of the situation and, if we were so inclined, sign a petition to maintain the right to camp there.

In any case, it is well worth the visit, especially if you are interested in African-American history. There is a museum, the community; the plaques and historical markers, and of course, the beaches themselves. Admission is free.
