A must visit place while touring Odisha. Amazing mangrove forest one of its kind, located in the estuarial region of Brahmani-Baitarani rivers and a world famous place for natural crocodile breeding. The morning boat safari is truly mesmerizing. We saw a few big crocodiles, so many baby crocodiles, Monitor lizards, many spotted deer and so many birds including colorful Kingfishers,. The Information center at Dangmal has a ticket counter, very nice museum, amazing crocodile hatchery, coffee shop, wash rooms and a boating point. There is a boating point in Khola too. There are number of resorts and homestays in and around Dangmal where one can stay.

We booked our stay inside the National Park at Dangamal and the accommodation is managed by the Odisha Eco Tourism. In December 2023, we stayed in Heron House (costs about 5800 for 2 people including all means and snacks) but this time we stayed in Chital House which is closer to the forest area as we wanted to see the spotted deers in the night using flashlights. The stay was very comfortable. We took the Govt boat ride (2800 for one hour) in the river and saw many crocs, various birds, spotted deers, red crabs, etc. We could see various types of woodpeckers, green malkoha (whistling yellowbill (Ceuthmochares australis) is a species of cuckoo in the family Cuculidae), various types of kingfishers, etc. We could see the Indian paradise flycatcher male but missed mangrove Pitta who are generally seen in March / April. It is a paradise for birds. From Bhitarakanika Dangamal, we drove to Gupti and took a boat ride (5000 per boat) through Forest Dept. to Habalkatti. The boat ride is about 3 hours one side and the boatman will wait for the day and bring you back next day. The Habalkatti accommodation is really awesome and located on a sea beach with pristine water and it is simply great to walk on the beach. The accommodation is through 4 cottages and 5 tents. Food is provided with accommodation. The Olive Ridley turtles will nest in March (when the sand is a bit hot) and lay eggs which will hatch in May. The stay was simply superb, On the boat ride, we could see a large number of crocs, birds including painted storks, etc. There are no nearby villages around Habalkatti but you will enjoy the tranquility and fresh air from the sea. You may see the dolphins as well (we could not see).

This place is at around 95km from Bhadrak. Most of the runs that goes to Howrah are having a stop at this place.we need to go to chandbali through mini bus from bhadrak bypass road. There are 2 ways to reach this national park from from Chandbali.
1. We can hire a boat from chandbali to reach this national park
2.Reach rajkanika and hire an auto to Jayanagar from where we can get a small boat to cross the river. From the river side we need to walk for 500 mts to reach the national park entrance
This national park is famous for mangrove forest where there are salt water crocodiles and spotted deers. We can spot four varieties of king fishers white throated, pie kingfisher,yellow/orange,blue feathered. There are some other varieties of birds like green bee eatres, night herons, sandpipers.egrets, pond herons etc
This sanctuary is famous for migratory birds breeding and starts in Aug and ends in Nov

The place is good. But they don’t provide a TV in the room. And they warned not to venture outside your room after evening due to crocodile threat. What will one do confined to your room?
Food is just average.

Bhitarakanika National Park is the second largest mangrove ecosystem after the Sunderbans. It's located in the estuaries where the rivers Brahmani and Baitarani meet. This is the habitat of the endangered salt water crocodile. There are a variety of birds, dear, monitor lizards too sighted here. In early winter a large number migratory birds visit this place.
The place can be accessed only by boating. Boats can be hired on arrival from government as well as private agencies. It takes 3-4 hours to complete the tour with a stop at the crocodile museum where the famous white crocodile Gori is kept. Boats can be hired for a full day too to cover larger area. When coming from Cuttack/Bhubaneswar should take boat from Khola and if coming from Jajpur, boating point Jayanagar is better. Taking boat from Jayanagar one can view the rivers in their full glory.
The people who sail the boat act as guides as well. They can arrange lunch on request. It's better to carry some food and water. If interested to stay overnight the government run "Eco Retreat Bhitarakanika" is available. Sitting on the boat and watching the flora and fauna around is a very special experience and very peaceful too. We went there in the afternoon and watching the sunset on return was truly amazing. Winter season is the best time to visit this place and November month is good to see migratory birds. I would definitely visit this place again in future.

Its very strange that there is very little awareness about this destination. In fact, I came to know about it when I was planning Odisha trip. It has no parallel in India and I doubt anywhere in world. You can see saltwatwer crocodiles in their natural habitat upclose. And you see them in 100s from as little as 10 cms long to as big as 20ft +. additionally you get a chance to walk in the forest amidst the crocodile area. We took boat from Khola and after visting the national park fro 3 hours , we saw bird sanctuary while returning where birds from Russia come to breed. DO NOT MISS THIS DESTINATION WHEN YOU VISIT ODISHA. We started from Bhubneshwar in the morning at 6 , reached Bhitarkanika by 9, did tour for 4 hours and returned Bhubneshwar by 5:15 pm.

Hi,
I am planning to visit Bhitarkanika by next month. It would be very helpful, if you can share some of the information:
1. How did you get the boat from Chandbali? How much did they charge you?
2. How did you book the Forest Rest House at Dangmala? (I am hoping that this was other than OETDC Eco-Tourism Guest Houses)
3. How did you arrange for travel to Gahirmatha from Dangamala?
Thank you in advance for your help

Hello Rahi,
How can one reach Dangamal from Bhubaneswar. Do we have to take boat journey
from any spot? If so where from and timing rate etc.
Thanks

Easier is to hire a cab from Bhubaneswar to kendrapada. Then there are govt ferries which take you to the core area.
