A small personable winery with great wines. We were able to spend quality time with Kate and had a most excellent pizza from her husband. Don't miss this, it's small, the hospitality BIG.

The tasting experience itself was delightful and excellent but their wine prices were surprisingly high.

We were first introduced to Dubost 11 years ago while celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary at a B&B in Paso Robles. They served their guests Homestead Red during Happy Hour. It was an inexpensive but great red blend. We liked it so much that the B&B owner called Kate, the owner of Dubost Ranch Winery, and scheduled a private tasting for us. We met Kate as well as her husband and their Winemaker, who was their oldest son (who has subsequently died. After his death, his younger brother picked up the mantle of Winemaker.) I think we took home a case of the Homestead Red on that first visit. On another visit, we were celebrating my birthday so Kate gifted me with one of the wine glasses, boasting the Dubost logo. I still have that wine glass.

I had scheduled a tasting for 1:00 Friday, thinking we'd have lunch at Dubost, either their wood-fired pizza or a charcuterie. When we arrived, the sign said "Closed." We ignored that and drove up to the parking lot where we found daughter-in-law Vanessa hard at work. I don't think she knew we were coming. Kate had scheduled our tasting for me via email; I don't think it got communicated to Vanessa. But Vanessa is phenomenal. She dropped what she was doing and gave us a private tasting. Unfortunately there were no food options.

I immediately asked if she could just give me some crackers. After having had quite a few tastes of wine at Castoro Cellars, and then making the long drive over winding and hilly roads to get to Dubost, I was carsick. She offered "a little cheese," as well. I replied, "I never say no to cheese." Vanessa went inside one building and joined us just a few minutes later with a charcuterie. It wasn't the big fancy one her son had served us last Fall, but it was pretty impressive, especially having just thrown it together. Thank you, thank you, thank you Vanessa.

Vanessa is very knowledgeable and personable. We thoroughly enjoyed the private tasting but we weren't given a Tasting Menu with prices. We liked some of the wines enough to buy them but were shocked when I asked for the prices. I've never spent $60 on a single bottle of wine before (other than Champagne). She didn't pour us the Homestead Red, although when I inquired about it, she said they have it. We ended up buying only six bottles of wine but, at $60 and $75 each, we spent $395 (plus tax). That's an average cost of nearly $66 per bottle! I will never do that again. I felt obligated after the mix-up where Vanessa didn't know we were coming but she responded so beautifully, with charcuterie and all.

I will return to Dubost Ranch Winery on future trips to Cambria but will be looking for Homestead Red, a nice blend that we can affordably open and drink at any time. I understand that the wineries were just starting to recover from five years of drought when they got hit hard by the pandemic and now another drought. All wine prices in Paso are way higher than they used to be. We've gotten over our sticker shock at $30 - $40 bottles of wine, but I still have sticker shock over the bottles we just bought. We will enjoy them with either special friends or on special occasions.

Their wines are very good and the setting is peaceful, bucolic. It is well worth the long drive. Just be smarter than us and make sure you know the prices of the wines you're tasting, LOL!

Without a doubt, wine tasting at Dubost is the best wine tasting experience we've had since the pandemic begin, necessitating reservations.

My husband and I chose to spend $10 for the Cheese Board to accompany the wine tasting. It was literally the best Cheese Board I've ever had! It included three edible flowers and, Yes, I did try one. It included dried persimmons with a schmear of cheese; locally grown walnuts, local olive oil, local honey and bread which the owner Kay makes herself. The Cheese Board included a triple cream brie, Manchego, a cheese rubbed with coffee and lavender and several other cheeses including a wonderful soft cream with a layer of ash in it. The owners' grandson (who is the son of the Winemaker) designed the Cheese Board; he wants to be a Chef someday. That is clearly his destiny; he's a natural.

Both of the Winemakers' 'kids' work at the Ranch; they are delightful young people.

The Winemaker's wife, Vanessa, handled the tastings. She did a great job and made it look easy, even though she was the only person working the outside tasting 'room' which was VERY busy. Her kids provided support but she was the sole Tasting Guide. Unfortunately, by the time we were ready to buy four bottles of wine, the people from a few other tables were also ready to leave. It was unseasonably warm that day and, after waiting about 10 minutes to place our order, we just couldn't take the heat anymore. We left without placing an order or making a purchase. Ah, well. We'll be back in February and will try again.

I do have two complaints / suggestions. (1) We arrived thinking that we had paid for two Wine Tastings which included Pizza. No, we had paid for two Wine Tastings. If we wanted pizza, we'd have to purchase the pizza. Vanessa apologized for the confusion. Not a big deal to us as we really didn't want pizza but it might make some guests angry. I get home and find an email asking me to rate my experience. Here's what I see: "Thank you so much for coming on Wine, Pizza and a picnic table - Saturdays and Sundays Only!" Doesn't that sound to you as if the Pizza is included?? It does to me even though I now know that isn't the case.

Two, the Cheese Board needed more bread. There were two generous servings of soft cheeses but not enough of the delicious bread to accommodate that much soft cheese. When we mentioned it, both Vanessa and her son were more than willing to bring us more.

They have a choice of three flights (red, white, mixed) but the flights include only three varietals each. I have noticed that, since the pandemic began, wineries are offering shorter flights. In Dubost's defense, though, each pour is 2 ounces. VERY generous, especially compared to the very short pours we received at J Dusi the day before. Plus, you can buy a full glass of any other wine you wish to try. I bought a glass of Carmenere and really wanted to take that home with us.

I highly recommend Dubost; we've been enjoying their wines since we were introduced to their Homestead Red nine or 10 years ago. It's worth the long drive.

Along with great tasting wine and really nice people—Kate Dubost is a jewel—this beautiful place gave us a sense of the old California. And the nearby town, Paso Robles, has a great village feel, with many charming little shops and restaurants. The winery also has some scheduled events that are big barbecues with their wine. We’ve gone to two. We feasted and met locals and had a blast. We’ve been there five times over the years.

This is a beautiful experience that will make you want to return again and again! The owner Kate Dubost can usually be found in the tasting room with Rhea (vtadting room associate) at her side making everyone feel welcome. If you look closely you'll probably find Zack (Kate's son and winemaker) working with the wines, in the vineyard or maintaining the site

They make you feel like family at your first visit and their passion for the wines come through as they pour you a glass or two. Bring your friends so they can share this great time.

Dubost Ranch Winery is definitely old school. If you prefer tasting rooms that aren't all slick and expensive, this place is for you. First of all the property is worth seeing - Beautiful old trees, and un-restored buildings with old cars from the ranch history exhibited in a run down old barn that's right out of a picture book. The tasting room is unpretentious and so are the wines. Like many we just saw the sign and drove up the long driveway to this delightful place. It's next to Justin's up on Chimney Rock. Go visit. You'll enjoy it.

It seemed to take a long time to get here, and we got a tad bit lost even tho this was our second visit. But it was worth it.

Ree is very knowledgeable, so we left smarter than we were when we arrived. The wines are very good, and it was nice to find varietals other than Zin. The wines are, in my opinion, pricey BUT everyone's wine prices are double what they were four years ago when I last visited.

Make the drive. It's beautiful and well worth it.

After spending a couple of hours in downtown Paso, mingling. We were told to stop at Dubost Winery on our way back to Cambria. We wound around a beautiful area and found our destination on a dirt road. We immediately saw some great old vehicles in an antique barn as we approached the tasting area.
Bottles were set up outside in a humble environment. I did the tasting and enjoyed the reds (buying 2 bottles) I enjoyed the modest surroundings and felt this was what a real winery is all about...good bye Napa hello Paso!

Åk hit om ni vill besöka en mindre vingård med trevlig personal o ägare. Finns även djur att se så passar barn också. Vinet var helt okey. De har även spelat in film här nyligen som ägaren kan berätta mer om.

Upon leaving lunch at Justin's Winery, we were going by this sign for Dubost and it, along with its dirt road was inviting and worthy of a deeper look. By far my favorite spot while visiting wineries, we were greeted by the crowing of the winery's roosters upon opening our car door. This independent winery has been in the Dubost family since the 1800's and the feel of the land is welcoming. Between Freckles the big orange cat, the chickens and roosters, and the hawks soaring overhead, this place grabbed my heart, as did the two women pouring for tasting. The wine was lovely and conversation real.
