As a marine biology student at Stanford in the 1950's, I came with classes, to Hopkins Marine Station, and visited what was left of Doc Rickett's legacy on The Row. We all had copies of his seminal work on Pacific Coast marine biology - "Between Pacific Tides" - and we tried to find all the invertebrates that he so carefully described.
Seventy years later, it is nostalgic to find that some small remnants of his work is left (if you would like to read his book, the MBAQ has it in their bookstore), and especially gratifying to introduce a grandchild who wants to be a "biologist" to this fascinating subject.
Most visitors don't know that the "bike path" along Cannery Row is actually the old Southern Pacific railroad right-of-way that served the canneries and the tourists in Carmel, and that Doc Ricketts was killed by a train at the crossing just in front of the current Aquarium.

Growing up reading Steinbeck, I thought that Doc (Ed) Ricketts was a fictional character... I learned otherwise. Ed Ricketts was the grandfather of modern Marine Biology, and he was a real character. They only open up his lab once or twice a year for visits, but I can't remember when. If you're interested in Steinbeck and/or Marine Biology, this is a MUST SEE! Fun fact: Ed Ricketts was the man responsible for frog disection in high school biology classes.

Worth the quick detour near the aquarium to see the actual home and lab of Doc Rickets. If you love history or literature, go see the Laboratory.

If you’re not a Steinbeck fan, Doc Ricketts Pacific Biological Lab probably has little meaning to you, but I’ve read almost all of his books, and got a private tour during a Steinbeck class that I attended at nearby Hopkins Marine Station about 5 years ago. So today, when we were walking by after visiting the aquarium, we saw the sign for an open house and stepped in. The docents greeted us warmly, and at 1:00 the very entertaining narration began. The man who spoke must have a thespian background because he spoke eloquently and humorously about Ricketts and Steinbeck, as well as the evolution of Cannery Row, the collapse of the sardine population and many other historical events that formed this area. The building represents an important part of the history of the Row, but many people walk right by, because the wood-shingled 2-story building is so nondescript. There was no charge for the tour, but a tip jar in located on the bar, and books are available for sale.

First off I admit I'm a bit biased as my husband and I had the good fortune of being able to get married on the decks behind Doc's Lab while it was still a private club. This location is historic for many reasons - least of which being it was the original lab that Doc Rickett's of Steinbeck's Cannery Row. The concrete tanks where he collected specimens are still located out the back overlooking Monterey Bay. In addition, the Lab was purchased by some Monterey businessmen as their private club in order to save the lab from being redeveloped or destroyed. The members included artists, cartoonists (Hank Ketchum, Gus Arriola, Eldon Dedini and others) as well as politicians, judges, doctors and others who maintained it much as Doc had left it. It was there that the founding members of the Monterey Jazz Festival first organized. It has had a rich and varied history and is one of the few remaining structures of the original Cannery Row.

If you have difficulty with stairs, this is not the tour for you. The lab is two stories and the entry is up the stairs to the second floor.
It is more fun if you read one of his books and know something about Ed Rickett before you go on the tour. The docents and city seem to be trying to gather more of his memorabilia. It was fun to see what the building had inside, and it is right along Cannery Row so there is plenty to do in this area of Monterey. Register for a tour on the monterey city website, it is free, tours are once or twice a month, donations are requested.

For those who are interested in marine life, science, history and literature, this tour exceeds expectations. The guide was as informed as he was entertaining, with a delivery that brought you back in time to the days when Ricketts was engaging in a transformative self-study of marine ecosystems by day (and night) and by night was entertaining legends like Louis Armstrong with his best friend John Steinbeck. One of the top travel experiences I’ve had! Especially good for adults.

A must stop if you have time and are a fan of Cannery Row by Steinbeck. Make sure to stop by the statue too.

Enjoyed the docent led visit providing insight into the life of "Doc" Rickett's and his contributions in marine ecology. The history of the building and the men's club that subsequently started the Monterey Jazz Festival was also interesting. Open to the public for tours the second Saturday each month, it was well worth the visit.
