There are maps, of course. But at least as interesting is the detailed story behind each map: what people thought and how they saw the world at the time the map was made. Some early maps took the point of view of the Church... for instance, one map shows the Devil walking hand-in-hand with a person.

There are comfortable armchairs and relaxing classical music playing. You might want to spend hours here, but the street parking nearby is for either one or two hours.

Great for history or even graphic art buffs. Maps from 1400's onward show how the view of the world changed. Each map has a placard explaining how it fits in with the other maps on display and its political significance. If you read all the details you can spend A LOT of time here. Went in mid-May when they still had minimal hours due to COVID but staff quickly responded to my email. She was very accommodating, and we easily made an appointment. Not much of a "tour." Basically you just walk around, look at maps, and read about them. There are a couple of sofas to sit in and 1 video to watch. They sell NOTHING. I loved it.

Wonderful presentation, free, and by appointment, of a private collection of maps and atlases. Many examples of world maps, early US maps, the Caribbean, Asia, etc., as well as pictorial maps. Well worth at least an hour.

This place is so wondrous, I almost don't want to tell folks about it so I can keep it all to myself. This is one of the best curated museums I've ever visited. Everything about this small, but mighty museum is top notch from the maps and other related items, to the staff, to the lighting and flow of the exhibits. The passion of the founder for his subject shines through from every exhibit. This museum is certainly a must see.

What a wonderful place to visit for those interested in geography and history combined with art. Richard - the curator is wilt give personal and informative tours. I took 30 folks (all seniors) there and they loved it.

The only challenge is location - not much parking in the area and the museum is 0n basement or lower level of the building.

My family and I have visited La Jolla for the last 10 years...I’m so glad we finally visited this gem of a museum. My sister-in-law is a wiz at finding fascinating out-of-the-ordinary places to visit...and she definitely scored again with this find! We spent an hour and a half and felt as if we hadn’t seen everything yet. We’ll definitely be back next year

My husband and I went here because I teach map skills and European exploration but wow! It is overwhelming g that the man who has amassed all of these maps decided to share them at no cost, with the public! If you are a cartography buff, this is your heaven. If you know little to nothing about maps, it is cool to see such antiquated ideas of the world! California as an island? Many wish but NO! River running east to west through north America? Heaven's no! Christopher, this is not Asia though the map eludes to it! And your drawings of natives? Craziness! But wonderful to examine! Curator was so nice and welcoming and even offered me a magnifying lens to use which was of high quality and allowed me to inspect actual brushstrokes on the pieces. This place was such a find!

My wife took me here as a bit of a peace offering after I let her plan the itinerary (which was mostly beach and pool). I knew I had arrived in heaven the moment I stepped in...there were maps from as far back as the 13th century...maps as far as the eye could see. And my wife? She ended up loving it almost as much as me!

Where did they all come from? Why are they stuck in the basement of a commercial complex? I don't know the answer to the location, just trust your sat-nav and head down past the juice bars, workout gyms, and physical therapy places to the courtyard behind the elevators. It's there. Where did all the maps come from? The owner apparently has gobs of cash to spend, and instead of wasting it on partying or private yachts, he travels around and buys maps from dealers, antique roadshows, and various attics. Then he puts them all on display for free! Each map has a nice little explanation of its meaning right next to it. You can stare for as long as your feet can take it at the evolving picture of our understanding of the globe's geography, along with fanciful drawings for sea monsters, the various winds, gods and godesses, and even adverts from bygone eras.

Plus the curator was friendly and readily available for questions.
