Wonderful place. Don't compare it with other jungle safaris. This safari is fully dedicated to sloth bears and you can be assured of their sighting. On the way towards the view spot, we can see many unique and rare birds. Forest guards help a lot in identifying them. If you are going on safari with kids, buy tickets to watch them at a closer distance.

Good Safari to Watch Tower from where Bears can be spotted at distance. Visit in the evening for spotting birds and few animals (4:00 - 4:30 PM IST Safari). Sreenivasa is a good and enthusiastic guide. Even the driver of the Vehicle was very cooperative.

Please do not expect this to match Safaris in Kabini/Nagarhole/Bhadra/BR Hills etc.

We went on a goverment organized jeep safari into the Daroji bear sanctuary. It costs about Rs 300 per head if you share the jeep. A private jeep cost Rs2000 for two of us. We were accompanied by a driver and a very knowledgeable English speaking Naturalist, who pointed out the various bird species and wildlife we encountered on the way to and inside the sanctuary. They were very good at spotting. We saw peacocks and pea hens, kingfishers, owls, partridge, star tortoise, mongoose, spur fowl and many more birds. The icing on the cake was of course spotting a bear. One has to pay Rs 300 extra if you have a fancy camera but it is definitely worth it because then you can sit in a cage like hideout for about half an hour and photograph the wildlife up close. This is where we saw a sloth bear, a mongoose and a peacock all foraging on a rocky hill. The bear came down and scratched his back against a tree trunk before ambling away into the scrub forest.
The Safari lasts about 2 hours and is worth it if you are a wildlife enthusiast or Nature lover.

Lovely place to spend a couple of hours viewing sloth bears and birding . The scenery is stunning and the bears are straight out of the jungle book . The bird life is amazing with 300 species if that is your thing . Leopards roam freely too.

Special help from Jigar and Rasul for guiding us to this only Bear Sanctuary in entire India. Jigar is a wild life specialist and a naturalist. Rasul was our Forest Guide and an expert in that Forest. We had booked a private Jeep Safari and they took us inside this large forest. They have such deep knowledge about the forest, wildlife and birds found in this sanctuary. If you want to book your private Jeep safari, you can reach out to them at Jigar - 9722527214 and Rasul - 7204151548. We can do some good bear sightings and also a lot of beautiful birds enroute inside this Bear Sanctuary.

Definite sightings of the sloth bear. The watch tower though far away from the bears offers spectacular views.. There is hardly anyone there except for 2 forest guards and we spent about one hour waiting for the sightings. The forest gaurds have their own binoculars for public use. We landed up seeing three sloth bears and some dancing peacocks!

Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary is open from 02:00 pm to 06:00 pm on all days.

You enter the gate in a vehicle and pay the fee, walking not allowed. Then you drive to the Watch Tower parking lot about 3-4 km away. Then there is a walking path with some stairs to the tower, the stairs are well made with hand rails, anyone can climb them. There are two levels that look out into the Park.

They pour honey onto rocks to entice birds, peacocks and even bears to come to lick it. The staff place jaggery mixed with palm oil at several places (at about 100m) from the watch tower. You need binoculars or good Zoom lens on your camera to see the bears clearly. Note, bears are baited with food which make them come out of their caves and then those can be spotted from the watch tower.

There is no organized safari, the entry fee allows you to enter the forest and explore it on your own. There is no jeep or car rental service here, so you need to bring your own vehicle. No extra fee for the car, but you are not allowed to enter the forest without a car. There are no toilet or drinking water facilities here. You need to climb a watchtower which is not disability-friendly.

We went with staff from Hampi Heritage & Wilderness Resort so they knew how to reach Watch Tower in their vehicle (jeep), not sure if somebody goes on their own then how will they reach this spot as there was no signage anywhere. They also let us use their binoculars to spot bears. Santosh from their team also showed us close-ups of the bears from his Video-Camera as we were having trouble spotting them. You need binoculars or good Zoom lens on your camera to see the bears clearly. On the way, they also helped us with bird-watching and spotting various species of birds something that we could never have done on our own.

Though it was made very enjoyable by the staff from Hampi Heritage & Wilderness Resort, the place at best is just average, you will not miss much if you skip it.

For a detailed itinerary of a 7-Day trip to Hampi, Aihole, Pattadakal, Badami & Jog Falls near Shimoga from Bangalore, feel free to visit the Links tab on my profile on TripAdvisor.

This is open 2pm till 6 pm only. We went in Dec 2020. You enter the gate in a vehicle and pay the fee, walking not allowed. Then you drive to the Watch Tower parking lot about 2-3 km away. Then there is a walking path with some stairs to the tower, the stairs are well made with hand rails, anyone can climb them. There are two levels that look out into the Park. Far down, you can see they put out bananas onto rocks and 3 bears come out to eat, about 3pm. These are rescued dancing bears, the other 100+ bears in the Park will not come out because wild bears don't like bananas. They also pour honey onto rocks and birds, peacocks and even bears come to lick it. You need binoculars or good Zoom lens on your camera to see the bears clearly.

We spotted 6 bears during our 90 minute visit using our binoculars, and found the whole experience relaxing and exhilarating.

The road on the approach is bumpy and poorly signed, but keep on progressing and hopefully you won’t be disappointed.

This is a sloth bear sanctuary located at about 30 km from Hospete and 17 km from Kamalapur town and thus can be visited along with a trip to historic ruins on Hampi.

Google map is spot on for direction to this place thus can be used however the road lack proper signage and condition is not that great. From the highway the entrance gate is at about 2 kms where one need to collect the ticket for the vehicle and personnel. From the entrance there is road through the scrub forest which ends in front of the watch tower at a distance of aprox 3 kms.

Note, bears are baited with food which make them come out of their caves and then those can be spotted from the watch tower. So, the ideal time to visit the spot is in the afternoon post 3:00 pm. Carry binocular/camera with high zoom if you wan to see clearly/photograph them. The place being rocky can get hot (even in Dec/Jan) so carry hat/cap. The place can also get crowded however if not is a good place to spend good 2/3 hours absorbing the surrounding beauty.

However, felt Rs 500/- for car as entrance fee along with individual & camera ticket is bit high given Auto and JLR vehicles are exempted. The forest dept should make alternate transport arrangement to carry the visitor from entrance to watch tower through a van or something paying individual ticket.

Overall, a good please to visit to spot bears
