Located along a frontage road on Pahoa-Kalapana Road, this church, painted Sea-Foam green with white trim and white corrugated roof has a unique history.
Constructed in 1927, this church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Faced with destruction in 1990 from a lava flow the community banded together and moved this piece of history to its present location.
The interior is a single nave with a double row of pews.
The upper interior of the church was painted by Father Gielen, a Belgian Priest.
The painting on the lower walls was accomplished by George Heidler, whose idea it was to create depth behind the altar.
In 1995 the church was closed by the Diocese of Honolulu after many of the parishioners were displaced by the same eruption that resulted in the church being relocated. However, the liturgy is conducted the first Friday of each month by on island priests who volunteer to conduct mass.
Souvenirs and religious items are available for a small donation which assists in the continued upkeep and restoration of the church.
If you are in the area stop by and visit.

Une magnifique petite église comme l'île en compte un certain nombre.
Magie de la lumière à travers les vitraux, beauté des peintures.
On est envoûté et charmé et on repart plein de sérénité.

Pat of our tour from our cruise ship after visiting the black sand beach. This is a beautiful little church which is reminiscent of days gone by. A nice little stop, look, snap a photo and be on your way kind of "attraction" on a tour but I think just a very special vibe and place if you're not with a large group of tourists. A place that somehow feels sacred.

This is a church that has a little history. Fr Damien was in the area when he arrived in the islands. This curch was built in 1927-28 after he was here but is dedicated to him. Stain Glass is int he church of Fr Damien and Sister Cope. Worth seeing and right on the road to Kalapana.

When we visited we were the only people there. Super quiet and serene. Not an architectural marvel but a humble house of worship. Some historical information and NO CHARGE! There is a donation box where we were happy to donate and some hand made beads for a nominal donation, all on the honor system. The entire visit was so low key and comfortable. I saw in the photos there was a cemetery but I did not see that. I would have loved to pay my respects there. Sorry I missed it. I would also have loved to enjoy a Sunday service.

This little church was quite a chore to locate as it has been re-located due to the volcanic eruptions that occurred close by the past few years. We needed to ask at least over 5 individuals before we actually found it by serendipity! Despite everything, do not rely on your GPS! It will not guide you here!!
It is located right on Hwy 130 - just above the town of Kaimu. It was moved here in 1990 due to the impending lava flow in its original spot. There are limited opening hours from 9a.m. - 4p.m. A quaint and quiet spot to relax and enjoy the remembrance of Father Damien & Mother Marianne's story of helping the leprosy patients on Kalaupapa, Molokai, There is also a nice stain glass of both of them in the church. Look at the painted ceiling and walls as approaching in this church- there is a lot of fine details and nice colors that blend in with the decor and feels like this church goes on and on. Absolutely worth it to try and find the Star of the Sea Painted Church.

This pretty little church has an amazing interior, covered with paintings that were the work of a long-ago priest. It’s moving to see the care and detail and imagination that went into creating them. Beautiful setting in the countryside, and the history is fascinating.

This beautiful little church is quite humble from the outside but you must see the inside. The priest who painted ot has managed to make it look huge with the beautiful murals he created.
The story of this chirch is that it was saved from the moving lava flow by the locals in 1990. They literally took it off its foundation and moved it to a new location

This church was moved out of the way of the advancing lava in 1995 that wiped out Kalapana. The interior back wall is painted to look like it is much larger church and it is so convincing that I had to check to make sure it was flat and that the depth was an illusion.
