We visited Tram Ton Pass but unfortunately the weather didn’t permit us to have any views. It was drizzling and the clouds and the mist obscured any view. But what ever we could see in the mist showed they had done some good landscaping and horticulture.

Way through mountain ridge above almost 2000 meters over the sea. You can iconic views on surrounding majestic green mountains from the top. Road is in amazingly good shape. You can get there on rented motorbike from Sapa, it's not far away.

Heaven Gate ( Tram Ton as the locals called it ) is a beautiful mountain range with breathtaking views.
There is one photo taking area where a long white staircase protrude out towards the clouds overlooking the mountains below. Just like an inviting "Gate to the Heavens" ( sky) above.
The winds are very strong, so be careful as you climb up the stairs towards the peak as one may lose their balance - certain parts do not have a rail to hold on as you climb.
One can also see the tribal ladies ( think it is Hmong ) dressed in their beautiful traditional costumes & performing traditional dances.
Definitely a must visit place in Sapa.

It was easy to buy the ticket and they explained what they were for. Took a train from the middle of Sapa to where the Gondola is.
Unfortunately when you get off the train they guide you to walk up to where you think the lift is. There is a bunch of Disney like things to do: take a picture on a horse, a giant blue crystal display, picture platform, shopping and more shopping, tee pees to take pictures in and more. All with a fee. Then just when you think you are about to get to the gondola, you take an escalator going down to where the train drops you off, just roped a different way.
The gondola is a marvel. Easy to get on as it rounds inside with big doors to get in through. When close to exiting the building the speed increases dramatically and whisks you up the mountain in 10 minutes. The view on the way up is amazing. Waterfalls and lush forests are part of the view. Also saw the trail you can foolishly walk up that takes 2 days - too old for that.
Getting off is as easy as getting on, and you enter is, of course, a shopping area. The smell of overpriced pop corn is in the air, but when you think about it, there is a lot of work in getting that stuff up there and I bought some anyway.
The stairs are steep and the view would have been spectacular, but it was a cloudy winter day. Very hard to see the mountain. When, at what we thought was the end of the stairs and the peek, we found another little rail ride to get to the peek. I looked for stairs going up instead because the line yup was long and found some. Only to see that after 2 flights, they were under construction. Too long of a line to wait and get to the top, and because it was so cloudy, not worth the effort.
When going back down it was breath taking again. Now you look at the town and how it's built into the side of a mountain and the beautiful rice terraces of the farmers below. Getting off the ride was easy and strain into, you guessed it, more shops. Remembering the ride up and where we were, we saw that they were trying to corral us into the Disney like area again. We hopped the ropes and found a way to skip this to get onto the train back into the middle of town.
It was great for the most part, the continual grab for cash was annoying and not needed. The view was great. I recommend the ride, just beware of the scams and watch your bags.

The view of the surrounding valley is already nice at this point. There are some shops for hikers to eat before starting the hike.

Beautiful views on the top and the road to the pass. There’s not a specific place where you can stop but you can stop where ever you want. Recommand a visit.

On the way to tram ton pass, Heaven gate is the place name. Need to climb up the hill to have the beautiful views.
I would say views were spectacular and breathtaking!!
We enjoyed this place very much and took beautiful pics around here..
It’s a must to visit amazing place.. Highly recommend. Best time to visit is Evening time.
Note: might not be suitable for senior citizens due to mountain climbing.
Be cautious if you travelling with kids to this place.

Aanrader!

Are there any good restaurants near the pass with a view?
Scritta in data 26 maggio 2017
No good restaurant there, but there are small stalls at that steep mountain side where you can sit on a stool to have local snacks and a drink sold by local vendors, with a good view.

Hi,
Should we go with a car up to the pass or hire someone to take us on a motorbike?
Scritta in data 26 maggio 2017
Motorbike is much better and enjoyable, you can easily stop at viewpoints at your leisure, unless you hit a rainy day!

Hi There,
I was just reading the reviews of tram ton on trip advisor and just wanted to know if you pre-book the motor bikes and tour guide before getting to sapa? i am very interested in going to sapa but am unsure how much i should book before i go or just book things there. Also how many days is a good amount to stay in sapa for?
thanks so much for your help!!

Not necessary to pre-book motor-bike and tours.
Except on Tet (Lunar New Year 5-days-holiday period), there are lots of motor-bike taxis waiting for passengers beside the one and only Holy Rosary Stone Church at Quang Truong Square (a very prominent open-air amphitheatre in Sapa town centre).
Hotels in Sapa can easily help out on bike rentals and guided tours. The very scenic Sin Chai to Tavan village Muong Hoa Valley walk/tour must not be missed, this is only 5km from Sapa. Cat Cat village is just 1km from Sapa. Ham Rong mountain is just behind the above mentioned church.
I would recommend at least a 3 night stay in Sapa, and to pre-book the hotel room.
2 nights will be spent on train travel to and back between Hanoi and Lao Cai. These 8pm soft sleeper train tickets can be purchased at the train stations on the day of departure, ie Ga Hanoi on Tran Quy Cap Road and Ga Lao Cai for the return train.
There is a mini-bus plying hourly from Loa Cai up to Sapa for 28,000 dong per passenger, wait at the roadside bus stop at the huge square car park in front of a tall Thien Hai Hotel just 50m from Lao Cai train station. For 500,000 dong you can charter a whole 10-seater private mini-bus from Lao Cai up to Sapa, not 500,000 dong per passenger as they will ask for.
