If you happen to be in the area in winter -- and apparently most tourists are not -- Settlers Cove provided a superb view of nature without the need to hike into unknown forests. We went on a Monday afternoon when there was waning sunlight and spent an hour or so walking the trails, climbing over rocks near the water, and enjoying the spectacular views and quietness of the place. Super photo opportunites can be had in every direction. We didn't see any other people around, and didn't see any wildlife either -- just trees, water, and rocks.

The entrance to the park comes near the end of the road leading North out of Ketchikan and takes twenty to thirty minutes or so to reach from the main part of town. We were able to drive down near the water and around the few campsites easily on a good road. There are wooden stairs leading down to the rocky shoreline where you get great views of the surrounding islands and water and a view back towards the forests. We also passed the spartan cabin that can be rented for overnight stays - an interesting option for our next visit.

Before or after leaving the park, don't miss going slightly farther North on the main road to the the "End" sign marking the legendary "end of the road."

A gentle sloping trail, or steep stairs, leads from a parking area through beautiful forest to a sandy/rocky beach. Great views of the islands and the water.

My husband took a cruise back in July of this year. We were not sure what we wanted to do in Ketchikan, but we did know that we wanted to do our own thing, which was away from the tourism of the town. Since we enjoy nature and walking in the woods, we decided to drive to Settlers Cover and hike the short trail to Lunch Falls. There are several steps to climb to get to the falls, but it is so worth it. If you have a chance, also be sure to walk around the campground or go down to the beach, or simply sit on the bench and enjoy the gorgeous view. There are areas where they have steps that will take you down to the beach. We saw several eagles flying around the area. Also while you are in Ketchikan, if you are renting a vehicle, be sure to see Herring Cove, where you will see plenty of eagles. Also before mile marker 10 (beyond Herring Cove), just off of the main road, is another gorgeous and spectacular waterfall. No hiking involved to see this waterfall from the road.

I lived in Ketchikan for about 5 years many years ago. I loved this place when I lived there. I took my wife and two daughters here when we visited SE Alaska. This is by far the most beautiful place on the planet. Old tree growth and green moss and looks like heaven. All next to the beach where tide pools await with sea life, etc. There is a wonderful hike through the forest and I wish I could like in this forest. It is majestic and wonderful and the air is as clean as Ive ever breathed. My wife and daughters were amazed and loved this place so much.

Bien qu'il ne s'agit pas d'une très grande rando, elle en vaut la peine!! C'est magique! Vous marchez sur un sentier mousseux entouré d'une forêt verdoyante. On pourrait facilement croire que des elfes y vivent ;-)

After traveling to Ketchikan on the Ferry, we headed directly up north to the end of the highway and into Settlers Cove Campground. There were several sites open but we found that site #1 suited us the best. The campground is a very short walk from a very nice ocean bay, and there is a nice hike along Lunch Creek very close by. We saw seals playing in the area where the Creek dumps into the bay while we were there.

The sign giving directions about the trails was a bit hammered so we couldn't tell how far everything was, but the hike is wonderful no matter how far you go. The Creek varies from rushing waterfalls to several stretches where it is tranquil and serene.

The camp host stopped by in the morning and was very pleasant and helpful, both regarding the site itself and with information about the hikes. There is also one of the Forest Service cabins available to rent in this campground and it's right at the edge of the trees near the shore of the bay. There wasn't anyone using it so we peeked in the windows. Pretty simply cabin with just a table and a couple of bunks, but it looks like it would be a nice spot to rest up for a day or two, especially if the weather is a bit rough.

We stayed here in very late July, and like I said we pulled in to find several open spots, so it appears that perhaps the campground doesn't really fill to capacity like campgrounds often do in the lower 48.

Overall, this was our favorite spot of our entire Alaska trip.
