We knew we wanted to do a chocolate making class and my husband stumbled upon the website for this one. This is not just a class, it is a tour—an experience. Ancel taught us about the cacao and her history, while we toured some cacao trees on the farm. We saw pods of varying sizes. It was very educational and Ancel happily answered my many questions.
After the tour outside, we went inside and got to crack open fermented beans and enjoy them. Later Ancel started roasting beans and asked if any would like to try stirring the pot. A little guy started then my husband offered. She commented on how he seemed to know what he was doing (of course he didn’t mention how he was a chef for years).
We opened the roasted beans and got to try them in comparison. There is more to the process, but I’ll let you attend your own tour to learn the rest hands on! It really is a learning experience throughout.
I guess this is not a spoiler: The chocolate we made is so delicious! It survived the hot and humid days of our travels and made it home safely four days later.

An authentic and enriching experience! Ancela is a great cocoa enthusiast as well as an inexhaustible gold mine of knowledge, anecdotes and experiences that she enjoys sharing! I even came back a second time for the workshop, and I saw its ability to adapt to each group: each workshop is unique and adapted to the participants 👍
I highly recommend, here is a must for any chocolate lover who wants to know more about this wonderful plant, its history, its virtues and its secrets... And who wants to treat their taste buds with delicious chocolate! 🌟🍫☕

Heartening to see ethical and sustainable approaches to chocolate making. This is obviously a passion for Ansel and her team. I learned a lot from the visit to the cacao trees, right through to the production process. Making our own chocolate to take home was an additional and welcome bonus!

An absolute highlight of my trip to Costa Rica. The education we received during our class was valuable in so many ways. Truly, cacao is in its entirety, is a medicinal plant and this class covers all aspects from the very start. We received education on what we eat at home (for me the states) but also much of what we do love (Hersheys? never again...) is only 10% cacao. This class will not only open your eyes but you will leave with a whole new appreciation for chocolate and revel in all its wonders. Don't miss this. Entirely worth it!!

We loved our morning at Talamanca Chocolate Farm. Ancel has an incredible knowledge about cacao and chocolate, from use in medicine over challenges in the modern chocolate industry. The farm is so cute, there is a super relaxed vibe about the place. We brought our 3 yrs old son and Ancel was so welcoming with him When he got restless we were able to let him roam around the farm and feed the chicken and play with the dogs.
We loved everything about the experience, you will make your own chocolates as well as tasting traditional hot chocolate.
They also sell their own chocolate bars if you are interested, they make super cute gifts (approx 1400 c per bar).

Sehr authentische Schokoladentour. Es wurde uns etwas von der Geschichte der Kakaopflanze und dem Ursprung erzählt. Sehr cooler Bauernhof mit verschiedenen Tieren. Wir haben selber Kakaobohnen geschält und Pulver gemacht. Danach Pralinen hergestellt und zum Schluss einen Kakaodrink bekommen der sehr lecker war. Diese Tour kann ich absolut empfehlen.

Fabulous experience in Costa Rica. In this class you REALLY learn about chocolate - how cacao is grown, processed and revered. Then you get to experience it in all stages with help from the owner, Ancel. She shares her passion and knowledge as well as her farm friends, Hero, T-Rex and Paprika being favorites. It's hands-on making and tasting that went way beyond our expectations. At one point Ancel said that chocolate can change you; the trees go through rebirth and so can you when you begin eating a bar and then finish it a different person. I felt that after this class I was a different person with a new awareness and respect for the earth and all it has to offer, especially with respect to CACAO. Thank you Ancel! Your apprenticeship is appealing and one day I hope to see you again. :)

Die herzliche und entspannte Art der Kursleiterin hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Auch wenn wir wegen mangelnder Englischkenntnisse nicht alles verstanden haben, war es sehr interessant und bot Einblicke in die Geschichte und die Zubereitung des Kakao.
Wir haben es sehr genossen und können es nur empfehlen.

Absolutely lovely morning spent with Ancel who was a wonderful host. She explained in detail the history of chocolate, how it moves through the process from pod to chocolate bar and how she makes her very special own brands. She was funny, engaging and super helpful. Highly recommended to anyone visiting the area!
