We were all in with expectations to see the different types of houses in Malaysia. But the place was run down... no proper maintenance inside the houses, most of them were closed down,no interactive devices,or proper exhibits inside houses , very rare houses had and that too wasnt written in English ,would have enjoyed or understood if everything was written in English too! As a tourists attraction i think thats what every tourist would expect too if we want to understand the culture and the designs of those house structures.

We were on a business trip to KL and decided to visit Melaka. One of my colleagues / team mates really wanted to go here on our way, so we decided to give it a shot. Overall, we were glad we went — as it truly was an experience. However if I had been with my family or it just been me and my husband, it wouldn’t nearly have been as much fun. The entry fee is reasonable, but the place is seriously run down. First we started with watching a musical performance with an opportunity to participate at the end. Be sure to check the schedule when you arrive so you don’t miss it. Then we started walking around the inner ring of traditional Malaysian homes. I didn’t bother going in any since you have to take off your shoes and I did’t bring any socks - plus didn’t want to do it multiple times. We then came across a couple games that you can play so we gave that a shot (no pun intended). One was slingshots with rocks ... and the other was similar to hacky sack. We actually had a lot of fun kicking the hacky sack like item around. Afterwards we walked to the back of the park to see all the other buildings from different Asian countries. Believe the other reviews ... these buildings really are falling down. Be careful and watch out for the dead bats caught in the netting of several of the buildings. Having said all that ... it was a fun walk. We liked getting to see the monkeys (in two areas) and walking past each of the spooky buildings. Crazy how they have let them fall into such disrepair since they must have originally been much nicer than the traditional Malaysian homes. Very sad. They do have bikes you can rent to ride around the park. You an also buy water and softdrinks in the park.

A great way to introduce the cultural heritage of our Malay Community dwellings in different States of the country. It’s full of different types of houses in different states of Malaysia.

Good location, easy to find. Ample parking...maybe due to not many visitors. Entrance is nice. Ticket price is quite reasonable. The layout is well planned. You can just walk from a house to another. Some of the houses you may have hostest showing and selling their specialties. There are also electric scooters for rent if you want a quick way around the area. The bad part is quite a lot of houses are nit well maintained. Some of them are under maintenance during our visit, while some other are just left abandoned. The asean houses are quite scary with no hostest and not well maintained.

If you want to go there, you have to take a taxi. But there is a big problem to take a taxi on the way back, becouse there is no taxi station. We tried to go back by bus, becouse there is a bus station, but the bus not only came 15min later, but it didn´t stop even we were waving by hands.
Mini Malaysia si quite nice, but lot of houses are closed, some of them a bit damaged. There is only one small restoran in front of entrance and no possibility to buy refreshment inside. Kid´s playground were closed as well.

In Ayer Keroh, on a main approach road into Melaka, this open air cultural museum is easy to find. It has a large parking area but it wasn’t crowded on a Thursday afternoon. We saw less than 10 other people there. It might be busier on the weekend.

Traditional wooden houses of each of the Malaysian states are arranged in a big semi-circle open for viewing. We walked through each house looking at how the house was constructed and arranged. Since the visits are self-guided it is useful that there were displays showing architectural features with explanations in Malay and English about how the rooms were used. While the houses mostly look similar (they are all brown wood) there are different architectural features to admire in each house, e.g screening, verandas, etc. The furnishings also make each house unique. There is the expectation that shoes are taken off at each house - which is a bit painful when you need to do it thirteen times.

At 2:30pm in the amphitheatre there was a traditional dancing display. Towards the end there was audience participation in learning some dances. The fairground component wasn’t operating and didn’t look overly interesting. Some areas were roped off for maintenance and I don’t think the traditional ASEAN houses were accessible. We didn’t have time to visit them any way as the thirteen Malaysian houses was enough for this visit and what we enjoyed. I did think it was an easy way to see Malaysian traditional architecture if it interests you.
