A good friend of mine called me for a trip to wasgamuwa.. was amazing! I was highly reluctant to go as I never been to wasgamuwa however I wanted to try and see... check the place out... it was a nice place they had booked near the park...
we got to see elephants and bears and other animals... this park has no leopards... maybe 1 or 2 not sure didn't see but mainly ppl come for birding and elephants!
We had an awesome cook the place we stayed... we got the ingredients and they made the food... we stayed in a bungalow sort of which was open to the outside ...
I highly recommend a portable mosquito net (this is to keep out not only the mosy but other insects that come at night when sleeping) that can be folded and taken on trips you can get them from arpico super store...
Also each time before you goto sleep please lift the bed mattresses and check underneath for any insects
also get some mosquito repellant as well... :D

One of the best places to see elephants but mostly can be seen after about 3.30 pm. we went in August and no other animals except deer at one place. Anyhow, the river bath is sometimes we enjoyed as it is safe and scenery. We went for a full day trip and the trackers had to clear roads and hardly any elephants in the morning but you can enjoy endless jungle flora.

Amazing Safari if you want a less touristy place to visit! We visited after reading how busy ayala can get. We had a whole jeep to ourselves so was able to swap sides depending on where the animals were. We only saw one other jeep whilst on our safari so pretty much had the park to ourselves!
We saw well over 100 elephants in the wild and a few REALLY close, including baby elephants too. We saw other animals such as water buffalo, deer, crocodile, aguana, peacocks, wild boar and many different birds.
We didn't see any leopards but we mainly wanted to see elephants, which we definitely did!!
Great half day doing the safari!!

Wasgamuwa is a national park situated in Matale & Polonnaruwa districts, bordering the Mahaweli River. Wasgamuwa is very popular for drastic and tallest wild elephants and birds. The best time to visit is the evening when elephants become more active and keep clam, less noisy since wild elephant may attack your jeep. Our visit to Wasgamuwa NP is superb. There are 3 wildlife bungalows inside the park and we stayed Wavulabe Wildlife Bungalow which is very nice place in the band of Mahaweli River. Bungalow keeper Sarath was very helpful person and his foods are tasty and superb. Our tracker is Dhanushka, he is very experience tracker. He saved us from unexpected elephant attack. But the Park Warden and the management is not that much great since we have to wait more than one hour to find a tracker and clear the entrance

Хороший национальный парк, красивая природа, много увидели разных животных. Но дорога была с какими-то кочками, прилично укачало.

One of the best national parks in Sri Lanka to spot wild elephants. Ideal to visit in evenings when elephants are more active. You can park the vehicles at entrance and get a safari Jeep from there. Jeep cost you 3500 rupees in addition to the entrance fees which costed us around 1000 rupees for 5 people. During the safari they stop at the banks of mahaweli river and you could spend some quality time there as well. We had a very successful safari here and spotted many elephants.

What is the best way to get to Wasgumuwa? Can either leave from Polonnaruwa or Dambulla depending on which is easier. Would prefer to use public transport. Thanks!

There is no online facility to book a jeep and park ticket. There are enough jeeps at the park entrance ( no need to worry at all :) ). Tickets issue only at the park entrance by Wild life department

HI,
I was thinking to go to Wasgamuwa from Polonnaruwa, but I didn´t find any option to get there by means of public transport. Does someone know if this route is served by bus? If not, is there any connection from Kandy or other place?
Thanks!

You have to go to Dambulla to start your journey.Find Mahiyangana bus n go to Hettipola (80km & takes 2.5 h).Then transfer to Handungamuwa bus @ hettipola n go to Handungamuwa (16 km takes 45 mins).Handungamuwa is the nearest bus stop to Wasgamuwa & it's around 1km to Wasgamuwa park entrance.

If I were to visit the Park in late September, is there a good chance that I may spot sloth bear and one of the large herds of elephant ? What OTHER animals and birds can I expect to see??

Yeah you can see large herds of elephants in late Sep -beginning of Oct,but it depends on your luck, because once i have bean their at second weekend of Oct,2012 & saw 80 elephants in one place, but in previous week end they saw only 4 in whole weekend.Sloth bear sighting are very rear but there is a chance. Most probably April-June is the best season for Leopards & sloth bears sightings in Wasgamuwa. You also can see Spotted deer,Barking deer,Sambar Deer, mouse deer, water buffalo,Sri Lankan leopard, jackal, wild boar, porcupine, lesser adjutant stork, malabar pied hornbill, various kinda eagles & more....have fun..
