When I was there in December 2018, the entire area has been turned into a comprehensive tourist area. This area is made up of two main sectors, the real Nishan with an old Confucius Temple, and a newly built sector with a Confucius Academy as well as a huge statue of confucius. I enjoyed my trip there. There are two bus from Qufu that you can take to reach here. I can only recall K29 now, which you can take on the main road south of the Ming City Wall. It took about 80 minutes, largely due to poor roads near the site. The stop to get off is called Lu Cun. When I was there, the entire Lu Cun was being torn down to make way for more tourism development. So don't be surprised or startled. Using Baidu Map helps a lot. The ticketing is at a large compound with a lot of parked buses east then north from the bus stop. When buying the ticket, they will ask which line you want to take, I took the default line 1. The ticket includes bus rides to the two sectors and the lines determine which sector you visit first. I went to the Confucius Academy sector first. On getting off the bus, there will be another ticketing area but that's for buying a ticket for the tourist car that brings tourists up to near the top of the Confucius statue. It's not that high, and you can see it in the distance so you can gauge whether you need the ticket. I bought a ticket but later thought it was useless as the area wasn't so big and it s great walking around anyway. Anyway I did take the car up the statue, then slowly walked down towards the Academy. You are allowed to explore two levels of the academy. It is difficult to explain what you get to see - it's like an extravagant display of elements of confucius thinking and history and Chinese philosophy in general. There are arrow dictating the order of your movement, so just follow them. There's a dining area towards the end which I made use of - food was OK. After exiting the academy, I walked to this stone arch situated by the lake and slowly walked back to the bus station. It was beautiful and I wished they had opened a coffee place here where people can relax by the lake.
Moving on, taking care to take the bus for line 1, I went to the historical section, where there is an old confucius temple. The highlight for me was the hill behind the temple. You can climb it and see the area including the lake. I saw some shepherds at the top. The climb was OK, about 20 minutes for me, with steps all the way until the top which had easily traversible rocks. After being down, I continued touring the rest of the compound, including something called confucius cave, before going back to the location where I alighted from the bus. Eventually the bus there brought me back to the initial ticketing centre, and I walked back to the Lu Cun bus stop (Note that due to the work being done, there is no physical sign indicating a bus stop, so best to remember where you got off the bus earlier). I returned to Qufu near 4pm.

I would highly recommend going to Nishan. It is my favorite Qufu site so far. There is enough to do for history lovers and for those who enjoy outdoors. The whole site consists of several attractions - a mountain, a temple, Confucius cave and maybe some other. I had only 1 hour and a half and these are the ones I managed to see. I didn't really see much of the temple, just quickly peaked at it and most of my time spent on the mountain looking over the area and observing the shepherds. The mountain itself isn't very big - more like a big hill. It took me around 15 minutes to get to the top.
The surrounding area is beautiful too. There are lots of other mountains around and a lovely lake nearby.
Some of the signs have English translations, but there were just a handful visitors - everyone, except me, Chinese.
To get to the site I took a local bus from Qufu. It took me longer to get there than what the information on the other English web pages said. Instead of 45 mins, it took around 1h 20mins. None of the people spoke any English really but they were extremely helpful. It was also a real China experience where everyone on the bus, including the driver, were asking who I was, where I was going and etc.

The Kong Miao in Qufu is a mass of humans, but the temple at Confucius' birthplace on Nishan was a tranquil affair. It is smaller, but better if you want to feel less flustered.
The cave and an academy are here too, so it is worth the trip out of town.

I like the atmosphere there...
Not many tourists, but it is a great scenic place.
Maybe a bit trouble for anyone who does not speak Chinese to visit here since you have to rent a car to go here...
There is no bus/ public transportation so far.

所谓尼山的尼，就是孔子的意思，据说这里是孔子的诞生地，孔子字仲尼，以此来命名的吧，山头有五座山峰，互不相让，地下是建筑的集合，有点故宫的感觉，山脚处有个洞叫做夫子洞，显得颓堂了

The story surrounding the NIshan Mountain Confucius Grotto is interesting. Tales vary from this being the cave where Confucius was born to this being the place where he was abandoned because he was such an ugly baby.
On one of the hottest days of the year, we had the entire temple and grotto to ourselves. The temple is small and the "cave" is tiny. The real reason to come here would be to enjoy the lovely forested park and trails which surround the main attractions. Bring a picnic lunch and unless it is October holiday week, it is usually pretty quiet, according to the ticket sellers.
If you aren't driving, it is really quite troublesome to reach the park so you would want to spend some time there enjoying the scenery. We caught the NIshan bus from the Qufu bus station. It takes about 50 minutes to reach the "Fuzi Dong" bus stop. You will actually be deposited on the side of a dusty road next to a small shop. It is then a five km hike to the park. In Spring or Autumn, this would be quite a pleasant walk because you follow the road beside a large, clean water reservoir and can watch the fishing boats. If it is the hottest day in 140 years, however, you must stand around looking helpless until a black taxi eventually offers to take you there for 40rmb round trip.
The entry fee to the park is 50rmb/person which is quite expensive. However, if you view this as an opportunity to enjoy fresh air in natural, quiet surroundings it is worth the trip. The bus ride also gives you a taste of rural Qufu, away from the Kongzi tourist traps.

In einer Grotte wurde er geboren, so die Sage, und diese Grotte liegt am Fuss eines grossen Huegels in den Bergen. Vom Busparkplatz kann man einen Rundweg machen, zunaechst begauf zu einer alten Tempelanlage, die recht einsam unter hohen Baeumen liegt. Vor Jahrzehnten ein schafstall, ist sie nun laengst renoviert und sehr sehenswert, schon wegen ihrer Lage in der Landschaft. Von dert aus sind es einige hundert Meter bergab zu einem Platz mit der Grotte am Rand, vor der ein schile ihre Bedeutung ausweist, sonst wuerde man sie glatt uebersehen, eine kleine Nische nur im Fels,der vielleicht drei Personen aufnehmen kann. Mehr gibt es nicht zu sehen, aber die kleine Wanderung ist sehr schoen.

HI I am looking to travel to Beijing then back thru Qufu - I have lived here 9 years, seen a lot of temples of course - would like to show my friend some of the country
I am interested in Nishan Mountain - so 30 km away
