I visited Freedom Park while on a civil rights journey through Alabama and Georgia. The history here is compelling. During our visit to the civil right district, our group had a chance to meet with the Reverend, an amazing, inspiring human being who was at the forefront of the fight for civil rights and a personal acquaintance of Martin Luther King, Jr. I don’t think I will ever forget his passion, his voice, his stories. To be honest, if not for him, I’m not sure how much I would have enjoyed the park, which didn’t feel entirely safe, even during the daylight.

My family was passing through Birmingham and did a Google search of things to do. We are so glad that we did not miss the opportunity to visit the Civil Rights District! A must-see destination of American history and a reminder that America has come a long way and continues to pursue equality for All!

We stopped by the area to see the new A.G. Gaston Motel (as a relatively new, yet undeveloped NPS site). Always great to visit an area to emphasize a sense of living history. The civil rights district is all nearby, making it easy to either drive to or walk about to see multiple sites on a single afternoon. Well worth the trip in.

If you are in Birmingham and have the time, do as much as possible to learn about the Civil Rights movement. There is so much to see and hear. Take the time to do it.

My sisters and I decided to visit the civil rights sites in Alabama and Historic Bethel Baptist Church was our first stop. I could not have planned that any better, because it was THIS tour that gave us the foundational education we needed for the rest of our trip. Dr. Martha Boyer and Reverend Wilder spent their morning showing us around the property, including the sites of the bombings. They explained to us why Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth got involved in the civil rights movement and the impact of their church on the fight for civil rights.

This was one of the best tours of a historical site I've ever been on, mostly because of the passion and knowledge displayed by Dr. Martha Boyer and Reverend Wilder as they educated us. We spent over 2 hours onsite learning from them and being exposed to the history of the protest movement for human and civil rights, and even discussed the current state of civil rights and racism. Thank you so much Dr. Boyer and Reverend Wilder for providing us with this knowledge, we thoroughly enjoyed meeting you both and appreciate the time you spent with us!

There are marker as you walk the streets highlighting significant civil rights moments and people in Birmingham's history. One of four "must see" in that area of town - Civil Rights Institute, 16th Street Baptist Church and Ingram Park.

Birmingham has a lot to offer to learn about the Civil Rights struggles and injustices of the 1960s. It's a big place so I would recommend booking an organised tour. The most notable places to visit are the 16th Street Baptist Church and the adjacent Kelly Ingram park, although with a tour you'll probably get to visit places like the Bethel Baptist Church in Norwood, Dynamite Hill and Collegeville which will give you a fuller understanding of the troubles of the time.

We had a very knowledgable tour guide. She gave personal and historical facts which related to the mounments. we were able to get off the bus take pictures, shop, at each site. It is not a finished, slick polished product, but it was adequate. The shops were small and the items were expensive compared to most gift shops. We were presented items such as a shot glass with Alabama on it for $8.99 ! I thought other items were most reasonable. The African Dress shop had items which were not labelled so we did not know how much they cost and they owner assured us they were indeed authentically African. The Black Major League Hall of Fame was small, but easily the best part of the tour we were offered, especially if you are a fan of baseball.
