Had high expectations of this Jiayuguan Fort. Very disappointing though. Went with my company co-workers and we agreed it almost had a Disney Land feel, that is to say, fake/not real. Imagine the Acropolis in Athens being rebuild like this? Imagine China getting their hands on ancient Rome (the city) and rebuild it? Imagine the Great Pyramid of Giza with white smooth exterior like the original?
Why oh why invest 300mln rebuilding this place? I don't get it, actually detest it.
I was done with the place within 30 minutes as were most of my co-workers.
By the way the towers were identical to those in Xi'an (the city wall ones); must have been the same company renovating them.
The best part for me was the views of the snowcapped mountains south of the Fort. Them mountains must be over 5000m in altitude. A magnificent sight

Despite the fact that most part of the wall is reconstructed rather than the original.
If you only want to see the real thing then you can give this place a miss. Else, it is still worth visiting as it sits on the original site and is rich in history. Apparently, this wall is considered to be the start of the Great Wall and is located along the Silk Road.

It is a nice walk along the renovated parts of the Great Wall. Not comparable to hiking the Great Wall around Beijing and nice to see the whole story and distance behind.

This is the fifth section of the Great Wall that we have visited thus far - not as long in length as the others but it is strategically one of the most important piece of the Great Wall. This "restored" section of the Great Wall is located in the exact location -- unlike the nearby section that is considered to be a "replica" because it is not in a location of an original section of the Great Wall. The Jiayuguan Pass Great Wall is important in history in that is located along the historic Silk Road, and this section of the Wall is on the western end of the Great Wall and considered to be the "start" of the Great Wall.
This Wall although short in length is also very challenging - the slope going uphill is almost 45 degrees which is quite steep. So hike up slowly and make frequent rest stops along the way.
I do consider Jiayuguan Pass Great Wall is definitely worthwhile visit because of its strategic importance in the history of the Great Wall and location to the Silk Road trail.

Nice piece of renovated wall, just way shorten than I expected. Anyway it can give you idea, how it looked like in the past, just it could be way longer..

We bought the combined ticket for: "great wall", Beaken tower (first strategic post) and Fortress. Regular price I guess RM 110, Senior discounted ticket RMB 55 (show your pass port to receive discount).
We had hired a car for all day to bring us to all three sites, RMB 200. Made it very easy to get from A to B.
We were very disappointed in the Wall. It is restored to a point that it could be in some Chinese Amusement park. In terms of view, well, looking towards the city proper lots of smoking factory chimneys. I have never seen that many in one spot. You can see mountain ranges in the far distance, which we liked. There seem to be trails (don't look very official though) leading probably into some hinterlands.
There is another section of Wall that is not accessible at this point. We could see scaffolding on it.
We walked around the park and encountered this new Chinese Gate, which was closed. We simply walked around it and found a couple of temples which seem to be quite old and interesting. Nobody stopped us from exploring those.
We visited during Mid Autumn Festival and National days, so it was not busy at all.

We came to see the Chinese Wall, so we climbed the 600 steps to reach the top end of it. Stairs are very steep but the view over the Gobi desert is worth the effort.

The Great Wall never ceases to amaze, especially the overhanging wall. You can see for miles out into the Gobi desert which is worth the walk up some very very steep steps.

Saya dan rombongan mengunjungi tembok besar china hari minggu sekitar jam 10 pagi. Saat itu ramai pengunjung yang kebanyakan merupakan rombongan namun tidak begitu padat. Pastikan anda memakai sepatu yang nyaman karena pasti akan berjalan jauh dengan medan naik turun. Saat saya kesana suhunya sekitar 8-10 derajat dengan angin yang cukup kering. So pastikan anda memakai pakaian yang sesuai.
