We came upon this quite by accident, and it was an extremely engaging experience. Love the sculptures and the settings. Was amazed by this artist.

Charles Umlauf was a child prodigy. When only 11 years old, he began earning scholarships to the famed Art Institute of Chicago. He honed his artistic skills and created commissions in Chicago, then moved to Austin, Texas, in 1941to become the Life Drawing and Sculpture professor at the University of Texas Art Department, where he taught for 40 years. To this day, Umlauf boasts the highest number of sculptures on public view in Texas. Visitors can appreciate 62 of them at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum in Austin. Located at 605 Azie Morton Road, adjacent to Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Park, the museum and outdoor sculpture garden opened in 1991. Nestled on six lush acres, it is open from 10 to 4 Tuesday through Sunday and has became a favorite oasis for visitors. A pond, waterfall and native plants dot the landscape of the tranquil garden. Umlauf's sculptures range from haunting expressionism to detailed neoclassical realism to lyrical abstraction. He worked in exotic woods such as Brazilian rosewood, terra cotta, rich bronzes and alabaster, cast stone and luminous marbles and rose quartz. He sculpted family groupings, whimsical animals, religious and mythological figures and sensuous nudes. Two of his most celebrated and distinguished sculptures are his 1939 War Mother and 1945 PIeta. Aside from Umlauf's 62 sculptures, the outdoor garden features more than 150 pieces by other artists and sculptors.

In Austin for the girlfriend's weekend and needed to get an art fix in before the night's debauchery. This is a nice spot to spend an hour marveling and what creative people can do.

The sculptures were very good and the setting was peaceful. The animal sculptures were excellent and realistic. The others are subjective depending on your taste in art.

Beautiful garden with well laid out Sculptures by Charles Julius Umlauf. There are about 59 sculptures on various themes - Pieta, Mother and child, John the Baptist, Muses, animals etc. Worth the visit. Will be back!

Umlauf was an amazing sculptor who created sculptures of haunting expressionism, detailed neoclassical realism and lyrical abstraction. Upon entry to this small garden we knew nothing of this man. The sculptures were not what we expected and although excellent works, did not appeal to us. The garden is small and was being cared for the day we visited. The waterfall was soothing and our time there was relaxing. Overall, a place for a quick stop in a peaceful setting.

We spent a meditative hour or so walking through the sculpture garden, accompanied by the sound of the water. Umlauf was a wonderful artist. The brochure was very helpful. It would be helpful for the visitor to have a basic understanding of biblical and mythological stories. The best pieces tell a story. Look for Farah Fawcett by the ticket booth. My favorites: Icarus, the Kiss, and Eve with the apple.

Our family stopped by here and enjoyed our time. The sculptures are amazing and the grounds itself a joy to stroll through. It was peaceful a peaceful spot and they gave our son a scavenger hunt which added to his interest. Overall it was smaller than I think we expected but a quick visit worked well for us.

My wife and I stopped here for about 40 min as we were driving through Austin. Not too big, this was a great way to spend a little bit of time (definitely less than an hour) to see beautiful sculptures while getting refreshed in the garden. It was a great deal because we had our student ID's so admission was $3 each; standard admission is $7.
The staff was refreshingly friendly and kind. This is a great spot if you're looking for art, something different, and only have a short amount of time.

Hi, Mitch. What would you like to know about this attraction? I am wondering if you felt that Um.auf would be open and space available to develop some living sculptures in topiary art there one the grounds. if donated botanicals and volunteer artists provided the time and talent did they seem potentially open to such a suggestion?

There are other places in Austin that might welcome such services, though. The Butterfly Garden and the Zilker Rose Garden, for ex.
