Tempat untuk melihat panda raksasa

Ketika mengatakan akan pergi ke Tiongkok, apa yang terlintas di pikiran anda? Pasti panda, bukan? Nah di tempat inilah anda bisa puas melihat panda yang lucu. Kondisi disini dibuat seperti di alam liar. Panda-panda disini dikembangbiakkan dan diajar untuk hidup seperti di alam liar. Selain panda ada juga binatang lain disini. Letak tempat ini memang agak di luar kota jadi butuh transportasi yang baik atau pemandu yang lumayan mengerti. Tempat ini juga pasti cocok dikunjungi anak-anak dan remaja karena unik pandanya.

Wildlife centre closed down

The wild animal centre is closed down! We went to louguantai yesterday and spoke to the tourist centre on the exact location of the centre only to find out it had been closed for a few years now. I assume it never recovered from the canine distemper the animals contracted. Very sad to think of how many animals they did have there!
We ended up visiting the Taoist temple which was cool, very different to the usual temples we had seen in china but probably wouldn’t have gone there otherwise!

Daoist sites, not pandas

I visited Louguantai solely to visit the Daoist complex, and I was not disappointed. According to Daoist legend, Lao Tzu passed through the region and was invited to expound his wisdom to the local people. A few kilometers from the main entrance, there stands a monastery that houses a shrine, the base of which is said to be the platform from which Lao Tzu preached. The legend states he lingered in the region and composed the Dao De Ching on Mount Zhongnan, in the Qinling Mountains. The monastery and shrine are beautiful and tranquil, and it was from this area that Daoism was popularized during the Tang Dynasty. If you are interested in philosophy and religion, definitely pay this site a visit.

No Pandas there anymore!

We went to Louguantai National Forest Park on 25.04.2015. During our remaining year in China we will probably not have the chance to go to the Panda reserve in Chengdu anymore. So we thought we could combine our trip to Xi'an with visiting the local Panda species. Our youngest son is studying how to protect the habitat of Pandas in school at the moment. Only after paying the entrance fee for the park we finally met some young Chinese who could speak enough English to explain to us that all the Pandas there died a while ago. This was confirmed by others later on. Some preferred to tell us that the Panda all became "ill" rather than saying they died. Actually, there were quite some people in the Park, hiking to the top of the mountain. Finally, we decided not to continue to the top of the mountain and proceeded to our Hotel in Xi'an.

Temporarily Closed as of March 2015

I was really interested in visiting this place when we visit Xian in April but I had trouble finding current info (no website). I read somewhere that the animals are ill and the center is closed. I asked our guide (Cynthia of China Connection Tours) to look into it. She reports that there is an outbreak of canine distemper among the pandas right now and the center is closed to visitors. No projected date for reopening. If you are not going to Xian in the next few weeks, check again. I wish I could see this facility but maybe it will be open in time for you!

Giant panda and friends

We had a great time visiting the Louguantai Wild Animal Breeding and Protection Center.

Since it is a wild animal breeding and protection center, don't expect to be pretty like a zoo.

The previous reviews mention about the poor conditions, I don't agree with them. We are animal lovers and we would never like or enjoy to see animals suffering, and it's not the case there! It's true that they could improve a bit more, but overall I believe they're more concerned about getting the animals better and stronger asap to put them back in nature.

We also saw two foreign volunteers looking after the animals and feeding them. I doubt they would be there if things were wrong.

The pandas including the brown and rare one, are so funny! They are very, very lazy and cute. They also have other animals such as birds, snub-nosed monkeys, deer, leopard, takins (goat-antelope) and etc which are also all very pretty.

It's a bit hard to find and I recommend you to get a day tour, or go with someone who knows the place.

Be aware that it's close to a massive conservation area and as consequence, you may get some mosquito bites.

The tip is, go there early to avoid traffic and to get a chance to see the pandas, they are normally out when it's cool, so avoid going when it's very hot.

This place is offered by different hostels in Xi'an as a half day trip and is also known as "Shaanxi Rare Wild Animals Rescuing and Raising Research Center" or the like. I guess the name is supposed to convey the impression that serious, animal-friendly preservation efforts were made here. However, that's doubtable.

The area of the giant pandas is okay-ish, but there are also other animals which are treated worse. For instance, there was a monkey in a 3 m^2 cage. Indeed, there are several kinds of endangered animals, however, I did not see any signs of actuel breeding or preservation efforts.

Don't go there. It's a sad place.

Lots of pandas, other animals in poor conditions.

Not sure what this place really is. I suspect that it is just a cheap zoo. The pandas have pretty good conditions. There were about 10 on view, including the very rare brown panda.
Other animals are housed in small concrete and iron bar enclosures, these include red pandas, bears, eagles and swans.
This is probably the best place near Xi'an for seeing pandas, however it is a long drive and apart from the pandas pretty depressing.
