Very interesting and very complete visit on the marvelous Cantonese Opera. A lot of videos and bilingual explanations.

In 2012, the Guangzhou Municipal Government decided to build the Cantonese Opera Museum to preserve and inherit the endangered Cantonese Opera in Xiguan. Xiguan was a vital area for the Canton Opera in the ancient city of Guangzhou and is now the Liwan area. Cantonese Opera and Lingnan Garden are deeply rooted in the area.

SWMBO wasn’t keen on another visit (Reviewed April 2019) to this wonderful museum but the attraction of the numerous small shops in the neighbourhood was too much for her to resist.
This time we took the #66 bus to the bus’s terminus in FengYuan Road, came out of the terminus and turned left, at which point SWMBO became lost. We crossed the road and walked to the intersection with BaoYun Road. We turned right and walked until we came to its junction with Longin Road and turned left, after a few metres we saw signs to the museum. SWMBO now recognized the small shops and was again content.
After a few minor diversions for retail therapy we crossed into Enning Road which is actually a continuation of Longin Road, and were soon at the museum. I still needed my passport and SWMBO her ID card to get into the site.
We strolled past the ponds and pavilions which unlike last year are now open and down the escalator into the museum. SWMBO found a comfy bench to peruse her social media while I wandered around the museum. No discernable changes from last year, but still tremendously interesting and informative with most of the captions in both Chinese and English.
After an hour I joined SWMBO to eat an orange before we ventured outside to explore the now open pavilions. All are very nice examples of contemporary Chinese craftsmanship and design. On the second floor there are a couple of ‘twee’ shops selling artifacts, where I thought the prices were telephone numbers! By the way, we could have drunk orange tea at ¥98 each, which didn’t impress SWMBO because on Monday we’d bought orange tea from the tea market for just a fraction on this price.
As we strolled out, we looked at a painted diorama of the site. SWMBO commented it looked a very old view, I peered more closely and observed a couple of people on what appeared to be roller skates!
There noted the banana trees growing which we’d missed on the way in. Then we strolled past more ‘twee’ shops and a cafes and eventually crossed the bridge and turned left and walked along a narrow lane to Enning Road. Then we retraced our steps to the bus terminus.
On the way we stopped to admire some of the wonderful old buildings. See if you can spot Guangzhou’s very own Manneken Pis, in fact there’s four of them in Longin Road and you have to look up to see them from the east side of the road.

I love Chinese opera, and so, was delighted to find a museum dedicated to Cantonese Opera Art. In addition to the works of art, there are six beautiful gardens.Performances also take place on the grounds.

Joli musée, gratuit qui plus est.

SWMBO and I were strolling along Enning Road after visiting Zhang TianYou’s Former Residence in ShiErFu West Street when we came to an entrance which SWMBO translated as Music Museum. This was a new place to us so in we went. This turned out to be the nearly new Cantonese Opera Art Museum.
You need ID to get in. I had my passport but SWMBO had left her ID at home but she had her number on her mobile which after inputting it on an app as instructed by the lady in the ticket office, she gave us a couple of tickets. There was no entrance fee.
There’s a sign by the entrance detailing performance dates for the month, unfortunately we’d arrived on a non-performance day.
Wow! What a place. It’s a couple of years old but built in the ‘old’ style. How we’d missed this place on our trips around GZ is a complete mystery. We followed the path around the small lake, stopping to admire the gold and black GuangFu stage, the red boat house and eventually came to the exhibition hall. There are other halls but they’re all out of bounds to us mere mortals.
The exhibition hall is down an impressive escalator. There is so much to see mainly costumes, props, musical instruments, records, theaters and performers. Plenty of videos of performances both traditional and contemporary are playing. There are also videos of performers applying their make-up which are fascinating. Signs are in English as well as Chinese. We just strolled around.
An announcement then told us the museum would close in 30 minutes, so we headed to the exit via the immaculately clean toilets. Then it was up the escalator into the real world.
Of course, I stopped to feed the fish in the pond and take more photographs. We once again strolled past the PuTianLe Hall and then we were out.
Looking around I realized that the museum is just part of a development with a small stagnant canal dividing what is to be a massive site. We crossed a bride and explored a little. There are new bridges over the canal linking the performance halls to the rest of the site, but these are closed off. There are unopened buildings that look like offices and maybe restaurants. There’s building work going on and a couple of ‘old’ apartment blocks which I suspect will soon be replaced. This part of LiWan district is really being developed!
We retraced our steps and eventually came back out on to Enning Road then we wended our way back along familiar streets Longjin Bridge which is an entrance to Lychee Bay park (TA reviewed), then it’s kilometer or so to the bus station on LongJin West Road where we caught the clickity-click #66 bus across the city back to the stop near our apartment.
We’ll definitely pay a return visit to the museum. A morning stroll in the park, lunch from our favourite CongYouBing (葱油饼) snack stall and then a visit to the museum feels like a good day out especially if we catch a Cantonese opera performance.

We had been walking a lot all morning in the 'Old Town' area when we came upon the Cantonese Opera Museum and attracted by the beauty of the location.
Entering into the walled site you are drawn into a lovely landscaped scene of miniature mountains with cascading waterfalls, walkways and small pagoda's surrounding serene waters with lovely koi fish cruising along the banks. Along the edge of the water were comfortable stone benches to sit and contemplate your surroundings. Across the small lake is an ornate and distinctive looking large pavilion that can serve as a stage for performances that would have taken place in old China. Inside the museum we learned that the lovely setting outside was evocative of a time once when the opera was part of life on the rivers.
The path led us inside a very traditional building on the outside but thoroughly modern building on the inside. I am not a fan of Cantonese Opera, but the displays were intriguing and entertaining even for a jaded westerner. I don't know if I will ever attend a Cantonese Opera, but if I have the chance I will certainly be more interested and knowledgable than I would have been, and I also enjoyed learning a lot about an interesting time and part of Chinese popular culture.
This is someplace that I want to return to see enjoy the garden setting, as well as spend a little more time learning about the Opera.
