Found this market place when out walking one morning.
It was very busy and down one end of it many people were having breakfast in a food court area.
There are many shops there selling nearly every type of food and clothes you would want , gift and souvenirs shops a plenty.
Good atmosphere, we bought some bananas and delicious plums there.
Opens early but I think it closes midday

This market has been here since the 80's. It has been renovated with ample car park. It is a wet and dry market. They second hand book shop on the upper floor. Bustling with people.

Hawker food of every kind, inclusive of market produce, and an endless variety of great bargains on clothings, shoes, knick-knacks not to mention the inevitably infectious spirit of friendly and communal banter livening the atmosphere all round.

When in Penang, Penang Road is a must-do, and Chowrasta Market. Souvenirs, Tshirts, tops, scarves, also dried salted plums & preserved limes with pink+white box brings back memories, pickles, nutmeg & more.. (I have gait/walking challenges (stroke), wear a legbrace.) In UNESCO World Heritage site Georgetown Penang, great visit.

The functional building on Georgetown's main road is a fine example of late 20th century Malay architecture which you can still find all over the town but usually in poor condition. Preserved foods in bright colours are sold on the ground floor and the second hand booksellers from down the block are now gathered upstairs with some clothing too.

Chowrasta Market is a must as there is no haggling
and hawkers are mostly exhibiting their wares and no heckling of visitors
Vibrant printed garbs, trinkets and household items at cost of 1rm, 2rm (mad cheap)
cons -
a) shelter is mostly propped up by 'large umbrella' supported by 4 metal prongs on ground level. Yup that means with every 2, 3 steps, "look down" and see if you are going to trip over one. even when you are VERY careful, if being pushed by crowd - trip hazard galore...be careful!
b) "Food Lane": harassment by food-hawkers - if you sit you need to pay, or be heckled to leave. Also heckled if you do not wolf food down.
lady selling red bean soup was nice, red bean soup done very well.
Besides that, eat at your own risk
(mental health risk, that is. Unless you find heckling very attractive)

Bought some local goods like pickled fruits, dodol and gula Melaka. There are second hand book stores and clothing stalls on the second level but it’s not to our interest.
30 min max needed unless you are making a purchase.

This is a lively market with stall owners selling lots of interesting local Penang food/snacks. The go to place if you would like to buy some of these items to take home with you - items like the famous Tambun biscuits, Nutmeg, Peanuts and all sorts of preserved fruits. Upstairs is a market of sorts selling souvenir t-shirts, clothes, shoes etc etc. Interesting to wander about and fun to buy. Enjoyable to browse and shop.

I'm a sucker for a traditional local market - wherever I go. This one is an interesting one - all manner of groceries, household items, dry goods and fresh produce.
\We got some lovely salted kurau fish from Myanmar - and it makes some lovely dishes; if you like that sort of thing of course.
Plus there is a man about a third way down on the LH side(coming from the Lebuh Penang end) who cooks a great wok fried turnip cake with egg and bean sprouts.; So good.

Chowrasta is a place where you can get all the stuffs, starting from the basic needs to souvenirs. With the reasonable price, you can get all the things within your budget.

i wondered is the second hand bookshop open a day before chinese new year?
Scritta in data 14 febbraio 2018
My guess is probably a "yes" as most of the operators are non-chinese.
