Historic farm, settlement, nature trail, graveyard tells the story of the birth of Shakerism in the New World. Small museum, tours, walking, trails, and special events. Easy to get to, hard to forget.

We enjoyed the film and the very helpful docent. She encouraged questions and shared interesting information. The meeting house was very large and there are many buildings on the grounds. We also visited the cemetery. Parking and admission are free!

Not a large village or building left as land has been sold off to the airport. Most buildings in a decayed condition and not able to enter. Some information via video at the startand some animals to see outside.

Thank you for visiting! The property does indeed belong to Albany County, and SHS continues to work on preserving and rehabilitating the eight remaining structures. We hope you'll come back in the future and see what's new!

I have been to 2 other shaker villages one in kentucky and one in
Pitsfield Massachuttes
this one needs a lot of capital to restore the old existing structures
it is a shame since this movement started here. Worth noting their inventions includes the circular saw, prepacked seeds and furniture. oh by way it is free but they ask for a donation what I did was to buy a souvenir to help them out it is a gem in the rough

This was the first Shaker village in the US. The main building has been restored and open to the public. Besides the building they have a 20 minute video and a gift shop. The rest of the village is standing, but in disrepair waiting for restoration.

I visited the first Shaker community in the US, where founder Ann Lee had her home base and is buried. It's called "Wisdom's Valley," and is a short distance from the Albany, NY airport. Interesting site, though it could use some benefactors to help the group save/restore the buildings. From the cemetery, it appears the last members in this location died in 1937.

The Shaker Historical Society is on Mother Anne's settlement in Colonie near the airport. The meeting house is open for viewing and there are displays on the history of the shakers. I learnt a lot and the ladies in the gift shop filled me in on Mother Anne and the movement. The grounds contain several other buildings which can be viewed from the outside. There is a herb garden which is worth a stroll and a small bridge over a creek. There is a parking lot on site, bathrooms in the meeting house. The gift shop is well stocked with shaker style art from local artisans - some great brooms and rounded boxes. There is a video presentation but I did not have time to check it out. Similarly there is a phone app tour and a self guided pamphlet which I reviewed later. I advise speaking with the staff for the history. Hopefully further funding will help revitalize the site!

Thanks for your review. We are so glad that you enjoyed your visit! Those who want to use the mobile tour can find it on the uniguide app website. Just search for Shaker Heritage Society and download the app. We will soon be offering a new, 10 minute orientation video in the Meeting House.

This is a historic settlement from the late 1800's into the 20th century. Most of the important buildings are still in place, with a good audio tour available. During the Christmas season, they hold a very nice craft sale as well, which is always worth the visit. There is also a nearby nature preserve, which offers a nice hike any time the weather permits.

The exhibit is one room that details the start of the Shaker Movement in America and continues through its last years. Well done. Informative.
