Amazing collection of local natural history.- wood samples of the native trees, taxidermy, weapons, seeds and fungi samples. It is wonderful that Mr Gass pushed to have this wonderful collection documenting the India ecosystem. It is unfortunate that many of the pieces are so old and have lost their color. The documentation is lacking on so many of the exhibits, nevertheless it is a wonderful collection. The price at the time of our visit was 200inr for foreigners ⁸while the local price was 40 inr, but this seems to be standard practice. It is small and we were done in less than an hour and I tend to linger in museums. It is essential one largish space with a second floor perimeter display space.

I wanted to see as many sights in Coimbatore as was possible in my short visit, and I spotted this place on the map so decided to head there and take a look with a friend of mine on his scooter. It's located on an educational campus so you are signed in at the gate, and from there you can follow the signs to where this place is. The building itself is historical and beautiful in its own right, but when you step inside it's like stepping back in time! The museum curator met us inside and I was a little disappointed to see how much more, as a foreigner, I was going to have to pay compared to my local friend, however we managed to organise something so that everyone was happy. We got a talk by the lady at the entrance desk about the place and it was informative and enlightening. Afterwards we wandered around the displays, each of which were in wooden cabinets with lights you could operate at the side of each one to illuminate the exhibits. They have all kinds of animals and birds there, as you'd expect from a natural history museum. There are displays of insects, different woods, seeds and crafts, all beautifully displayed and immaculately maintained. The view from the upper level looking down over the ground floor is architecturally stunning. We thoroughly enjoyed wandering through this incredible little museum, and would highly recommend it to others who have an interest in nature, history and architecture. I think Horace Archibald Gass from the British forestry commission who founded this place did a sterling job!
Opening hours are 9am to 1pm, and 2pm to 5pm Mondays to Fridays, the museum phone number for arranging school tours is 04222450307, and entry fees are 40 Rs per adult and 20 Rs per child, with a significantly higher entry fee of around Rs200 for foreigners, as is the case in most Indian tourist spots unfortunately.

Fifty years ago my father was teaching at the Forest College. I found some historical momentos that I took over to the college in February 2019. The curator and staff welcomed the items and I was touched by their warm hospitality. However, I am yet to receive an official receipt and my emails to the curator have not generated a responce.

Surprisingly sprawling campus with lots of trees right in the middle of the city.
The place has rich collection of taxidermy mounts of animals collected by British / Early indian forest dept.
Nominal fee of INR 40 collected for Indian nationals.
No extra charge for Photography.
This museum stands today only because of relentless efforts of a British officer H.A. Gass after whom the museum has been named.
Apart from animal stuffings, the museum also has lot of wood specimens of various tree species.
Good to carry your own water bottle/ Food as there are no shops near by.
It will ideally take 2 to 3 hrs to completely take a look at all the items kept there at a leisurely pace.
Perfect place for taking your kids out on a holiday.

Gass Museum is an exclusive museum for forest. An old colonial building is housing this unique forest museum. Established during British era has a huge collection of articles related to south Indian forests. It is one among the old Indian museums. It is unpopular and lesser known museum in coimbatore town. But it is worth taking our children to this museum as it highly informative on natural history.
