If you only have one place to go in Trivandrum for a taste of traditional Kerala architecture, this is the place to go. It also offers a decent collection, albeit slightly poorly lit and not much information given.

This is a gem of a place. One can almost miss the nondescript entry...but once inside there is just so much of history....the beautiful building, especially the spaces inside the artifacts and belongings of a royal family of the erstwhile kingdom of Travancore.
What is so wonderful is that it is so well-kept and the tours which are guided so well-conducted.
If interested in further history, a nearby structure houses photographs too.

The Kuthiramallikka or Putthanmallika palace and museum are the same. The palace has been converted into a museum where a lot of artifacts have been been kept. Within the palace compound, there is a photo gallary with has lot of photographs clicked by the last King of Travencore and his brother. These are tresure troves which gives a great insight into the royal family life and pre independent & post independent Kerala. Museum guides are very friendly and take keen initiative to brief the visiting tourists. Footwear not allowed inside and neither photography is allowed.

This used to be the abode of Travancore rulers and the same has been preserved in time. Readers are advised to visit this place to learn more about the Malyalee people.

I visited Kuthiramalika Museum on 24th September along with my family. It is an excellent heritage being presented to the tourists by the guides ( a very dedicated female guide took us around, who took pains to address a multu-lingual Group's questions). I could see a sense of pride in her which is one of the ideal attributes for the guide are Heritage Museum. And unfirtunalately such sense if belonging and pride in our heritage is lacking at many other places!
Of the many rooms of the Palace, only a few are open to the tourists. Wood carvings that keep one spell-bound, are its USP. The sculptors' signature carving in the form of a wooden ring carved out of a solid wood mass on the inner side of the roof at the entrance, is worth noticing!
Probably better funding to the Museum may enable them to renovate more rooms of the Palace, so that a more complete picture of those years' royal lives would be revealed to the tourists.
I strongly recommend this Palace Museum to any tourist visiting Thiruvananthapuram.

The building - part of the temple complex - is interesting to look at. The portraits and photos more so. Some of the photos of the royal family are very old - 19th century.
A member of staff guided us around and this gave a much better perspective.

If you are visiting the famous Padmanabhswami temple in Thiruvananthapuram, definitely make it a point to visit this museum. It is located in in the temple premises itself. This palace of the royal family of Trivancore is now converted into a museum. The artefacts in the museum include objects used by the royal family, furniture, thrones, ivory objects, Chola bronzes, Chinese pottery, paintings, wooden statues of traditional dancers and much more. It takes roughly about 1 hour to see the museum in detail. There are guided tours in the museum that occur every 20 minutes. For intrigued minds, it is advised to see the museum once with the guide at his super fast speed, and then by oneself at your own speed and understanding.
Medium of speech: English/ Hindi/ Malyali.
Alongside the museum, there is another Art gallery in the same premises showcasing pictures of the royal family at various occasions. Entry ticket palace is Rs. 50/- per head for Indian adult, Rs. 15/- per head for Indian child, and Rs. 150/- per head for foreigners. One needs to deposit luggade and footwear outside. Photography inside the museum is not allowed, but one can photograph the exterior at a fee of Rs. 20/-
It is an exceptionally well maintained museum.

You need to visit the palace which is maintained as museum and place was closed for long time as considered to inauspicious due to death of Raja immediately after completion of Palace.
The museum maintains various articles and items collected by various Trvancore kings and especially by Raja Swati as he was interested in Music.

Definitely recommend a visit to this Palace. The teak & rosewood carvings & structure is fabulous. The guide was very interesting & as our party consisted of Malayalam & English speaking he conducted the tour in both languages.
Visited this palace with a 13yr & 10yr old who both really enjoyed the Palace however, did found the photo gallery a bit boring! The adults in our party enjoyed the photo gallery & the history behind the photos was interesting. The preserved Elephant head is a must see!
This palace is in the old fort and next to the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Only Hindu’s are allowed inside the temple but fantastic to view from outside.
