A wonderful walk through a wintry park! Staff were so happy and ☺ ❄ The sculptures were impressive, and very large! Try the famous Hawthorn fruit on a stick for a true local experience!

Amazingly detailed array of snow sculptures on a massive scale. Highly recommend.
Loved the large scale sculptures and the snow mountain you can walk up on and through.

There are actually 3 different sites for the Ice and Snow Festival. Each one has their own entry fee. 2 are on Sun Island, and one is near the walking street and Sophia church area.

Snow expo - is daytime only (9am-3pm) and at the other end of Sun Island (on google maps, it’s in the “Scenic area” of Sun Island). You need to pick up tickets at the booth that is near PolarLand, and then walk across the bridge to the starting point. There is a little coach on the other side that can take you out to the far side, and then you can walk back, or vice versa. There are amazing snow sculptures, and a bit of sliding available here. I’ll add a more detailed review on the “Harbin Snow Fair” listing. 2+ hours needed

Snow expo - is daytime only (9am-3pm) and at the other end of Sun Island (on google maps, it’s in the “Scenic area” of Sun Island, near a pond). You need to pick up tickets at the booth that is near PolarLand, and then walk across the bridge to the starting point. My Didi driver took me to the hut to purchase the entry ticket (about ¥260+coach tickets for ¥20-¥30) and then drove me over to the bridge. No cars can cross the bridge, everyone needs to walk. There is a little coach on the other side that can take you out to the far side, and then you can walk back, or vice versa. There are amazing snow sculptures, and a bit of sliding available here. 2+ hours needed easily. There is a cafeteria at the far end overlooking the picturesque frozen lake with massive sculptures on it that serves hot chocolate, coffee, and what looked to be a place to add a shot to your hot beverage to give it some punch. Although it is daytime, it’s still cold out. You definitely want to dress in layers - base layer (like a thin turtleneck shirt and long johns), mid layer (like a regular shirt or cotton trousers and heavy cotton ski socks) and then Outer layer (Lined knitted hat that covers your ears, mittens, heavy winter coat, snow pants, snow boots) most outdoor store will have all of that, Uniqlo has good base layers.
*Note for people who didn’t grow up in cold weather - mittens keep your hands warmer than gloves. Denim can trap the cold, so choose other kinds of trousers than jeans. Snow will melt into your jacket / pants and make you colder, so make sure you coat is water resistant in addition to being warm. Technology HATES being cold. At -20c your battery can go from 80% to 0% in about 2 photos.

Ice Festival (called Ice and Snow Expo I think) is only ice sculptures on Sun Island. It’s where all the taxis want to take you when you mention sun island or festival. This is best done from 3pm onwards so you can do the sledding activities but also experience sunset and the lights coming on. You can easily spend 3+ hours here. As the sun drops, so do the temperatures!

The final location (small ice sculptures and little kid activities) is a few blocks from the walking street, and a down the road from St Sophia church. I just walked through it quickly on my way back to the hotel, but there was some nice stuff there.

Went here with my wife and 5 year old on a feb via a private tour. As expected, place is very cold so prepare proper winter attire. The snow sculptures were amazing and some are really grand in scale. Aside from admiring the sculptures there are also fun activities for young and adults to enjoy. Highly recommend this pace if you visit harbin in winter

...this place is still incredible, with snow sculptures on an epic scale, all beautifully formed and finished. We were blown away by how great it all looked.

We really wish to see the snow sculptures but the park was not even half ready and many workers and sculptors were still at work. The tickets are still RMB260 with no discount.

The snow fair is located just a short walk away from the cable car station on Sun Island. Some of the sculptures are simply huge and the detail is amazing. The best things though are the ones in the main square done by representatives from all over the world. This year "Cereal Killer" was my favourite, although it only came runner-up. There are so many of them and all so good.
The place has a huge ice rink too where you can ride bicycle sleds or weird spider crab ice machine things.
There is a nice cafe here too overlooking the ice rink with reasonably priced items.
We spent about two hours here which was probably just enough...fantastic place.

Sun Island is usually a park, it is quite isolated from the main city area (but not far, less than 20 minutes without traffic). The Snow Sculptures are put on exhibit on Sun Island (Tai Yang Dao) during the winter and is outside. The sculptures are made by international teams and there are small and large ones, the large ones take around a week to make and ranges from about 20metres and up in length and 10 metres in height. There is a shuttle bus there that takes you further inside the grounds, I think you need to pay extra for this (I went on an all inclusive tour so not sure) but I’d say it is worth paying for because you might be tired from the cold and walking when you leave, especially when walking with snow shoes, it is a little harder than normal sneakers.

The large sculptures are really impressive, I learnt that the snow is man-made though, because there isn’t enough real (clean) snow and real snow isn’t sticky enough to hold shape. The man-made snow is mixed with a glue then shaped into large rectangular prisms (the base of the statues), piled onto one another and carved from top to bottom, leaving a rectangular base at the bottom and the sculpture on top.

There is a lake inside the grounds which of course is frozen in winter.
There are kiosks inside the actual ground before and after the ticket check that sell snow shoes and plastic sleds, not sure what the prices are though. Some people get the sleds and play on the frozen lake.

If you come during the day, bring sunglasses. After awhile, all the snow sculptures just look the same. Come just before sunset so you can see both day time and night time scenes. At least the sunset casts some orange glow on them. There were light and laser shows with music at night and light exhibits that turned on at night. There were slides as well but I didn’t go on them as most of the sculptures including the slides started to melt.

I stayed there for 3.5 hours on February 26th which was the last day it was open for the season as it got warm early unexpectedly. 3 hours is still enough though.
There is a café here that sells hot liquids like hot coffee and chocolate – I didn't have to buy anything to sit inside and I didn’t get any, but I stayed inside to watch part of the light shows. It isn’t that warm inside and my camera lens never recovered from being too cold and won’t retract, until I got inside the car and back to my hotel where it was actually warm. I didn't find any public toilets there but I am sure there must be. If you come early during the season before everything is made, you can watch the people sculpt the snow.

There is free wifi here, but only if you have a Chinese SIM card or downloaded the WeChat app to your smartphone prior to coming.

About the prices:
Yes it costed around ¥330 per person, I used to think the entry prices for these ice sculptures are quite expensive. However, considering the massive scale of the snow sculptures, what it took to create and maintain them, the night light shows and how the ice is harvested from the river, I think it is reasonable. I learnt from my guide how the ice blocks are harvested, and it is very risky business. People stand on the frozen river to drill holes into the ice along the perimeter of the cube, then cut along the holes to join them. The holes and cuts are drilled and made as deep as the ice is, then a crane is used to lift it out. Because it is all ice all around, there are little things to hold onto and slipping and falling into the hole where the ice was taken out is a real possibility.
Also, like my guide said, after awhile, it all looks the same, so yes, some people think it is boring and a rip off. What you see in the photos are what you get when you visit, just up close, so decide for yourself.

The largest snow sculpture in 2019 is (was) 107m x 31m × 20m with beautiful details. It is truly mind boggling that this can be created ... let alone many many more here and through out the city.
