It is an amazing place with plenty of history of Bolivian mining. It is like traveling back in time you can see the mine, the buildings with antique furniture, and the trains. Filled with stories of the past on how they worked on the mine, the trains and railroad systen. You can’t miss visiting this unesco world herritage site.

These reviews are crazy. It’s an old abandoned mine with some old trains. There is nothing to see. Have you seen an old train, deserted train tracks? And old abandoned junkyard equipment? Then this is a pass

We got to know about this place while in Uyuni and decided to visit it. We took a bus to Potosà and got off at the first stop. It was late afternoon so we could not see any building inside but still had time to go around the ruins and train wrecks. It was a great experience! You feel like travelling back in time. The evening sunlight is amazing for pictures and at that time you have the opportunity to meet the workers leaving their work sites and talk to them. It is very high and you need to slow down when walking up and down (about 4200 m)

Its a long time since I visited, but it is a WOW place to visit. Its just like going back in time 150 years.
I'm not sure what facilities there are for tourist visits, but its very close to Uyuni, maybe just 20 kilometres away on a good quality dirt road. You will be able to get a taxi from Uyuni for almost nothing but I'd recommend finding a guided tour. If possible try and get inside the COMIBOL administration office building, although this maybe off limits. The top floor is amazing and was the quarters for the visiting directors of the company that owned Pulacayo many, many years ago; Hochchilds. Its full of beautiful antique furniture and photo albums of the mine's past. The stonework in the main adit is so beautiful, but again this maybe off limits, but you'll be able to walk to the adit entrance and look inside.
Try and visit the ruin of the town on the other side of the mine from Pulacayo. I think its called Huanchaca. It is completely abandoned, but because this area is so arid the houses are in moderate condition. You can easily imagine the town was abandoned just a few years ago. The church is very interesting with a number of burials inside the church.
If you visit Uyuni, then this is an absolute must side-trip for half a day.

Coole Anlage. Spannend und nicht überlaufen von Touristen. Mit etwas Glück kann auch die Werkstatt noch besichtigt werden. Die Mine (Tunnels) kann leider nicht von innen betreten werden.

We find out about this little village by chance. I don't know if the travel agencies in Uyuni propose the tour, however you can easily get there by bus (20 min and 5 bol). Once arrived the entrance fee is 10 bol. Ancient trains very well conserved (nothing to do with what you see in Uyuni) are exposed at the entrance. Then you can stroll around the history of this village which was the second largest mine site in the world. Ask the lady at the entrance to visit the machines manufacturing. Normally Don Constancio will be more than happy to show you around and give you plenty of explanations and demonstration about the machines and the work in the mine.
If you wish, you can climb up the surroundings hills to have a fantastic view of the salar and the valley. The walk to go up is quite easy if you are already accustomed to altitude.

We took a lokal bus from Uyuni to Pulacayo (5 Bob) and walked a little at through the village. There is a nice little railway museum. Than we got the great opportunity to visit the Mueseum of the Mining Company Huncaya which was not yet officialy opened. But we met Sr. Ebert outside the building and he gave us a private and very interseting tour through the muesum. We really enjoyed our day at Pulacayo!

Village avec sa mine en activité. Son "musée" de chemin de fer en plein air. Ses écoliers qui se déplacent en rang dans le village. Lieu très atypique et pas touristique sur la route entre Uyuni et Potosi. Le tout se fait à pieds en 1h. Halte vraiment très intéressante.

I had the pleasure of visiting this town with a friend and her friend (who had actually spent her toddler years growing up in it when it was functioning). We asked the bus leaving Uyuni to drop us off at Pulacayo, wandered in and around and could have easily spent hours here. It was almost completely deserted, and knowing that at one point this mining community was home to tens of thousands of people made it a little eerie, but it was also so much fun to explore and see the history.

Hi. One of you commented that Pulacayo is reachable by bus from Uyuni. Can anyone please explain whether there are buses going there and returning a few times a day and where would they depart from in Uyuni? Generally speaking, I would appreciate any tip that could help me to visit Pulacayo independently from Uyuni. Thanks
