“An interesting history of this cemetery.”

Mi sono fermato qui durante un tour della città. C'è un'immensa quantità di storia all'interno di questo cimitero. Essendo il secondo cimitero ebraico più grande d'Europa, qui sono rappresentate numerose fedi ebraiche. Se presti attenzione noterai che alcune lapidi hanno testo in spagnolo. La storia più recente comprende la guerra di 30 anni fa. Questo cimitero era in prima linea e gli effetti di ciò sono ancora visibili fino ad oggi.

Ho visitato il cimitero ebraico come parte di un tour. È un posto piuttosto inquietante. Triste vedere che gran parte di esso è invaso e trascurato. Suppongo che serva a creare un senso di intensità. Vale la visita.

An interesting history of this cemetery.

Stopped in here while on a city tour. There is an immense amount of history within this cemetery. Being the second largest Jewish cemetery in Europe, there are a number of Jewish faiths represented here. If you pay attention you will notice some headstones have Spanish text.
The more recent history encompasses the war of 30 years ago. This cemetery was on the front line and the effects of this are still visible to this day.

Very sadly showing signs of neglect

I visited the Jewish Cemetery as part of a tour. It is quite a haunting place. Sad to see that much of it is overgrown and neglected. I suppose it serves to create a sense of poignancy.

Worth a visit.

Provides real perspective on the war

Standing amongst the dead, and imagining the usage of heavy weapons and further killing perpetuated there, it really gives a unique perspective on the lack of humanity in Sarajevo during the siege.

Beyond that, it is a very nice place. One of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe.

Interesting historical stop

This was a really interesting stop that was part of a tour we were on. It's not a place that we would have thought to go to on our own. This is the 2nd largest Jewish cemetery in the world, and was in use for over 400 years. It has memorials and graves related to all the atrocities committed against Jewish people during those 400 years, including during WWII. During the Bosnian War in the 1990s it was the front line for the Bosnian Serbs who were holding the city under siege. The location of the cemetery is on a hill overlooking the city so it makes strategic sense that the Serbs would have used it. It's sad and sobering to see the many bullet holes that have damaged a large number of the headstones though. All in all, this is a unique and interesting historic site that is worth visiting if you're in Sarajevo.

Good stop

We stopped here with a tour and it was pretty nice stop for 15 minutes. There were some impressive graves and it is nice to think about history.

Um dos maiores da Europa

Fomos ao Cemitério Judeu de Sarajevo como parte do tour Under the Siege da Spirit Tours. Ele tem mais de 500 anos e é um dos maiores cemitérios judeus da Europa com quase 4 mil tumbas. Foi ocupado pelas tropas sérvias por ficar em um local alto, nas encostas da montanha Trebević, de onde tinham uma boa visão da cidade e podiam atirar durante o cerco, protegidos pelas grossas lápides de pedra. Hoje não está mais em uso, pois a comunidade judaica na cidade não passa de cerca de 700 membros. É muito triste ver algumas das lápides danificadas por balas e morteiros e mais triste ainda saber que a partir dali os sérvios alvejaram e mataram milhares de pessoas. Cerca de 100 mil pessoas morreram na Guerra dos Balcãs, 11 mil só em Sarajevo.

Viewpoint for City

The cemetery was used as observation post and artillery location during the war. Many tombstones are damaged by gunfire. A short drive from the city it is worth the drive.

A moving experience. Terrible to think that troops occupied this cemetery during the siege of Sarajevo and snipers shot down into the city from within the cemetery.

This is apparently the second-largest Jewish cemetery in Europe (behind that of Prague). The Jewish community used to be counted in the thousands but is, today, down to about 700. The cemetery is no longer in use.

Awful to see some of the headstones damaged by bullets and mortars.

There is a 'cube' in the centre of the cemetery which commemorates those who died in the Holocaust concentration camps. Disgustingly, this has been daubed with graffiti.

I visited as part of a longer tour of the city but I think this location would not be easy to find on one's own and I am not sure if it is reachable by public transport (I doubt it).

Some of the paths are steep and rough - unsuitable for disabled or the elderly.

An unusual and intriguing stop on your tour of Sarajevo

We had not heard about the Jewish Cemetery in Sarajevo. How, I am not sure, as it is the second largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. Our guide stopped here unexpectedly, and we are so glad he did.

The headstones with Hebrew carvings are intriguing. The sight is extensive, but quiet and reflective, as there were no other visitors. You'll need to go up a steep hill to reach the topmost entry point. Our guide said to be sure to enter and exit through two different areas out of respect.

Most moving was seeing the stones with the bullet damage.

One of our favorite sights in all of Sarajevo. We hope you find it just as interesting.

A Legacy of Sarajevo's Multicultural History.

Located on a hillside overlooking the city of Sarajevo, this, one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe, was used by Serb snipers during the siege to target the city. Some of the gravestones show bullet damage from the conflict. The cemetery is in need of some upkeep, the further up the hill you walk, the less maintained the cemetery is.
