Unfortunately Fiji is now into directed commercialism and the village is a prime example. They appear to cater to the tourists as they drop in rather than at structured times. As a consequence the women looked a little tired and disinterested. No direct pressure to buy but you probably would feel bad walking out if you didn't! Kava ceremony and singing was lovely but overall not a stand-up experience.

Loved our visit to Lawai. The ladies of the village were so kind and courteous. Showed us around the village and answered our many questions regarding their way of life. Then we went into the main building where the ladies and young children sang and danced. They demonstrated how they make their clay, how they create their art and how its glazed with eucalyptus sap after its baked. You then have a chance to show at the tables the ladies have set up showing off their wares. Everyone was just so kind. Recommend a visit here for authentic, hand made souvenirs.

As I look back at previous review pictures - I see Mary and the other beautiful ladies who showered us with Bula and their welcoming hospitality. We had the whole experience too. The cava ceremony, the pottery demonstration, the singing and fun dancing. We really appreciate that they shared their culture with us. This is real Fiji. Vinaka my beautiful ladies.

We came during off-season, so we were the only people visiting the village at the time. The ladies of the village were incredibly graceful and nice, they showed us how they make clay and pottery, they sang and danced, and did a Kava ceremony. There were 11 families displaying their goods, which made us feel a bit pressured to buy from each of them, but you can also donate to the village pot that benefits all of them. All in all, it was a lovely experience and wonderful to meet them all.

We went her at the recommendation of a driver we had hired to take us to the Tavuni Hill Fort. (The two activities make for an excellent half day trip. We paid $80 for the cab including pick up and drop off at our Airbnb in Korotoga. The driver alone made the experience with his reminiscences of growing up on Sigatoka, and his telling of local history and lore)
Sonny was our main host at the village and explained what was going on and how to participate. The singing and dancing were heartfelt and genuine - these are regular people from the village not professional performers. The yaqona (kava) ceremony was low key and fun to participate in, and then the group dancing was a bit awkward but also fun.
I had read about the pottery process at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes visitor center, and really wanted to see it demonstrated. This was the highlight for me - foot wedging the clay, and the simple tools and techniques used with great skill to make a vase.
We knew about the contribution in advance, and really it just felt like a monetary SevuSevu instead of bringing yaqona to give.
We browsed all the tables and chose one item to bring home. We made sure to make a financial gift even though we are traveling light and are not willing to haul a bunch of purchases.
Ten or twelve people from the village spent more than an hour with us - well worth sharing some of our (relative) financial wealth.
I loved chatting with the villagers and drinking more yaqona with them while others were still shopping.
I read the negative reviews here, and really think the authors have learned little about the culture before traveling here and are here for beach and sun, not for an actual cultural experience.

I found it was perhaps my most authentic experience in Fiji. The potters are all able to take pride in their traditional ways and women earning money, even the elderly. Sure there was a donation for the dance and ceremony. Even on tours, you pay for entertainment. Yes, it was the tugging at heart strings to buy the souvenirs but it was better than the money I spent at a Nadi souvenir shop where I got ripped off FJD $280 because I didn't insist on getting a price for a small painting on canvas. The women choose not to sell through shops to give them control. I supported a woman there who was unable to speak and had a baby to support. There was a blind man and really old women. I spent FJD$260 and got so many souvenirs. They are maintaining traditions. Isn't that what we got to foreign countries for?

How very sad that we were heavily pressured to donate to this village as they 'rely on tourists for their survival'. After a desultory dance performance we were led firmly by the hand around the craft tables to ensure we made purchases which were extremely expensive. We noticed the obvious discomfort of another family who arrived shortly after us. Not sure about them but we felt exploited.

Can’t help but feel drawn to buy things that you’ll never use just to give them some income. We did. They’re lovely people, who, like many indigenous around the world, rely on art to survive. My only advice is to take heaps of change. Every village art stall all up and down the west coast NEVER have any change. Not even for small notes. Sad.

This is a wee treasure of local village potters showcasing their wares. We visited independently, not on a tour and viewed their pottery only. Definitely worth supporting them, prices are very reasonable and you know that your money goes directly to the artists/village. Simple handcrafted pottery that is a lovely souvenir.
Entry is a bit obscure with minimal signage but just drive in and you'll be welcomed.

So some reviews say you can buy the same items in Denarau cheaper but they are made in China. Hello made in China is not authentic and the locals don’t get the money. We found it very eye opening and we had a seven year old with us who was very taken by the simplicity of what the children do to amuse themselves. Not one IPad, kids these days should take note of how much fun you can have without one

We made a $100 donation between the 4 adults and got about $200 worth of pottery. Had no problem with them mentioning we could make a donation.

Overall a good day
