Amazing teacher, very fun class where you learn so much about beginners calligraphy. The class is well structured, but you feel relaxed, which is the point of calligraphy. You are also offer traditional Chinese tea. If you are ever in Beijing. take this class, you learn so much both from the class, and the teacher, who has amazing lessons on life and happiness. Take this class, you will regret it if you don’t :)

When I was arriving, I was greeted by the most excited man named Richard who started the Hutong Calligraphy school. He told me that he would be the translator for my class, and that I was the only one participating today. Well, was I in for a treat! My teacher, Mr Sun Guanglu, not only a brilliant watercolour artist, but also a pyrography master where he burns his artwork into wood. I was so privileged to spend one-on-one time with him today in this workshop. The most incredible part of the whole experience was that he didn't speak English, yet the flow of the whole workshop just meant that I knew exactly what he wanted me to do and how he wanted me to hold the brush and the amount of ink he wanted me to use... ART IS THE MOST UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE AND I AM SO INSPIRED.

A very nice calligraphy class where you can create your own souvenir. My teacher, Richard Li, was a very kind, informative and helpful teacher. I had arranged a two-hour class and I couldn't understand how two hours passed. It was quite enjoyable. It is a good opportunity for people who want to have extraordinary cultural experiences, which they can find on Trip Advisor. A beautiful experience that you will definitely not regret.

Really enjoyable experience! Would do it again definitely. I had fun learning about the different Chinese characters and the origins of calligraphy writing also. Many thanks , 5 stars !!

Amazing class, brilliant learnings and great fun. Mr Sun is a master artist and was so open to sharing his immense skills with us. Our water colour artworks were successful! Richard as assistant (who is incidentally a specialist calligrapher and teacher) was a fantastic host who ensured we had a fabulous afternoon. Absolutely recommended as an authentic cultural experience that is fun to boot.

it was such a good day and lesson. we got an amazing experience of drawing the Chinese character "dragon". it is a great art and huge work. I recommend Richard Lee's lessons to everyone. thank you very much! we will take with us as a souvenir of China the symbols we personally painted. this is amazing.

My husband and I took the summer palace calligraphy class with Richard Li. It was an amazing experience! Mr. Li started with breathing and relaxation and then guided us through brush techniques and finally taught us the symbols for "dragon" which we practiced until he was satisfied. At the end of the class we were able to write the calligraphy on nice paper which made a wonderful memento. He was also kind enough to take some photos of us. I can't recommend this experience enough! It's definitely something I'd like to learn more of in the future.

During my stay for business reason, I came across his workshop. He took the time to explain me tons of things about calligraphy. It was very interesting. I didn't take any lesson though, due to my busy schedule.

I work in Beijing, and when my family came to visit, I arranged a 3-hour painting class with Richard. Both my sixteen year-old cousin and 60 year-old mother greatly enjoyed the workshop. They found Richard's class informative and inspiring. My family felt the experience of discovering what it means to paint with the entire body and mind was inspiring. After class, he had lunch with my family and helped them get a taxi back to their hotel. This was incredibly helpful to me, because I was at work. All in all, my cousin and mother found Richard kind and passionate, and we all recommend Richard's classes.
