This church is not going to be around much longer given the wear/tear it has seen over the centuries. We were the only ones present while there and not many tourists come to see it. It's a nice break from pagodas/temples and to learn a little about the history of Portuguese colonialism in Myanmar.
No bathroom and no entrance fee here. Twenty minutes is sufficient.

Interesting place, but because all signage are in Burmese, it is best to do your research before visiting.
Based on some of the pictures from others, during my visit a lot of the vegetation on the walls were cleared.

This is a 18th-century old Portuguese church ruins that was destroyed by the Burmese king after they recaptured Thanlyin. The walls were covered with creepers, weed and mold. There was a tomb inside the surrounding walls. Overall...the church is not well kept although the walls seem to be in good shape.

It is about half an hour from downtown Yangon and when you get there is not too much to see. All notices are in Burmese so I would read up on the internet first so you know the fascinating story of Philip de Brito the Portugese warlord and his association with the Mon people. They are restoring the ruin currently and if you have some spare time it is definitely worth a look and something very different from the other sites in Yangon and probably one of the oldest colonial structures.

This place is just near to the Thanlyin Oil Refinary Factory which is still operating since 1925. We tried to visit Thanlyin Oil Refinery Factory but the guard didn't let us enter. Probably because, we asked for permission. If we didn't we might be able to get into the compound.
A little bit further to the compound on the left along the small lane, you can see the first church (catholic) of Myanmar but all that's left is just walls. The church named (the church of Saint James) is rumoured to be and Italian Church built in 1750 by Italian missionaries under the supervision of father Paolo Maria Gerini.
Inside the church there is a tomb of Phillip Di Brito, the Portuguese who built or supported the construction. He was the mayor of Thanlyin (Syriam) under Rakhine King and later he took over the town from the King and made himself the ruler. He was executed for destroying Burmese Temples and Pagodas by Pegu King after losing the battle against Pegu King. The tomb was I think written in Portuguese

This church ruin is somewhat difficult to find and is in Thanlyin just on the edge of Yangon. Luckily I knew a local man who knew about this church and where it was located. The church was built in 1749 and destroyed shortly after. In the late 1500s, Thanlyin was the base of the Portuguese adventurer, Philip De Brito. He established himself as a local warlord from his base at Thanlyin, however, in 1613, he was executed by impalement, a punishment reserved for defilers of Buddhist temples. Thanlyin continued to be a major port until it was destroyed by King Alaungpaya in 1756 during the Mon revolt and the church was destroyed at this time.
Unfortunately it is not well kept up although the walls seem to be in good shape. There is a tomb that is littered with garbage. This could be an excellent heritage site and there are some nice colonial houses nearby.

the church is located at Than Lyin township, a small town on the other side of Yangon river, probably 45 mins drive from Yangon, most of the Taxi driver knows it.
