Masses of local produce and gorgeous hand-crafts - don't miss! We bought some special things to wear to church and the people appreciated our interest in their culture.

Took a visit to the market and was a little underwhelmed by what was available. Even though it was late morning not all stalls were open and some were just setting up. There were some good crafts available and the produce looked great. Could do with some signs as it took some time to discover where things were still worth a visit.

Достаточно чистый рынок в центре города. Поскольку на Тонга в сезон дождей бывают сильные ураганы, рынок сделали крытым.

I went to this market a few times during my stay in Nuku’alofa. It’s open everyday except Sunday. It closes around 4.30pm. One day there was a cruise ship in town so I was disappointed that many stall holders were missing but other than that each other time I found what I needed. It’s extra hot inside so take a fan or buy one there. Produce very reasonable and take small dollar amounts ($2 notes & $1 coins for fruit etc) to make purchasing easy. I made sure I split my purchases up between vendors as I believe they all deserve customers not just the big main ones. I took my own fabric carry bag as unfortunately Tonga is terrible with plastic waste and plastic bags of every size are encouraged so I tried to decline with each purchase. In the front inside area, There is a large section of Tongan cultural items like bone & mother of pearl carvings, carved wooden pieces, Tapa cloth & other woven items. Beware some are plastic that look like bone but the price reflects that. If you’re not price savvy & haven’t already looked in other shops elsewhere you might find that will charge you $15 for a key ring that you can buy for $5 in other shops in town! But then you might find a bone carving for $20 when it’s $30 elsewhere. Around the outer stalls outside there are many Chinese shops with imported goods. Here you can buy all the normal things you’d expect to get in a $2 shop or junkie type place. Not very good quality & lots of knock offs. But some is very over priced so buyer research is good. You can also buy toiletries, shoes, underwear & fabric. Lots to choose from! Malo means thank you so use that word when you can. The more Tongan words you can use the better experience I think you will have if you don’t just want to be a tourist.

As a Tongan from overseas, its always good to see the local handicrafts on the bottom level. Before buying anything be sure to go up the ramp to the top level. theres waaaay more local handicrafts and souvenirs that are possibly cheaper than on the bottom level.

WE enjoyed strolling through the market to see all the fresh fruits & vegetables but, what we enjoyed the most were the booths of home made crafts. We especially liked the hand carved wood items. The detail and expressions that went into each one was remarkable, particularly the turtles. Just amazing.

It’s better you go I. The morning so you will see a busier market . It is very interesting to see to mix with the real Tongan life. There is a section where you can buy all sort of interesting souvenirs. Bring cash with you as only a few accept credit cards.

The best selection of fruit and veg in Tonga. Handicrafts upstairs and downstairs. Pearls are cheap but imported from China, not Tongan pearls. Tshirts not that great. The handicraft collective next to Friends cafe is much better and more authentic.

May seem like a weird question, can you buy celery in Tonga? Also, are the fruits and vegetables organic / pesticide free?

What currency does the market accept? I'm assuming no credit cards only cash.

What time does the market roughly open/close at? Is it open all days of the week?

As we were only there for the long Easter Weekend, we saw it open on Saturday. All day affair, starting early in the morning, but most of the produce was gone by after lunchtime. Tonga have their own currency and is readily available at the airport with minimum fuss. Not many stall holders would have credit card facilities there. Cheers :-)

No you can’t. However there’s a bank and western union literally around the corner, perhaps 1 minute away where you can change your money.
