“Great history of Kandy museum ”

Adoro la presentazione. La guida turistica era molto ben informata non solo sulla storia del museo Kandy, ma sull'intera storia di una nazione legata al colonialismo. È un posto da visitare per approfondire la storia della cultura e della topografia ruandese

“Good introduction to Rwandan history ”

Abbiamo camminato dal nostro hotel a questo museo e l'abbiamo trovato abbastanza facilmente poiché ha un bel cartello dove si spegne la strada principale lungo una stradina più piccola. La sicurezza al cancello d'ingresso ci ha indirizzato all'ufficio dove è possibile pagare l'ingresso in contanti o con carta. Volevamo solo vedere la casa e il museo storico (non i rettili che erano a pagamento) e l'ingresso costava circa $ 5 USD a persona. Una signora dell'ufficio ci ha accompagnato fino all'ingresso e ci ha fornito una breve panoramica della casa ed è rimasta in giro per rispondere alle domande. La casa è scarsamente arredata ma è ricca di poster e immagini informativi (sia in francese che in inglese) che spiegano la storia del Ruanda, la sua colonizzazione e Richard Kandt.

Great history of Kandy museum

Love the presentation. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about not just the history of the Kandy museum but the whole history as a nation tied to colonialism. It’s a place to visit to get more history of Rwandese the culture and topography

Good introduction to Rwandan history

We walked from our hotel to this museum and found it fairly easily since it has a nice sign where you turn off the main road down a smaller lane. Security at the entrance gate directed us to the office where you can pay for entry in cash or card. We only wanted to view the house and historical museum (not the reptiles which were an extra charge) and the admission was approximately $5 USD per person. A lady from the office walked with us to the entrance and gave us a short background on the house and stayed around to answer questions. The house is sparsely furnished but has plenty of informational posters and pictures (in both French and English) that explain the history of Rwanda, its colonization and Richard Kandt.

Interesting history of Rwanda's pre-colonial and colonial days. Also snakes!

Very interesting museum in Kigali mostly covering Rwanda's pre-colonial and colonial era history. Many photos and information from Rwanda's colonial days under the Germans and later the Belgians post-WWI. Features history of German explorers and colonizers and their time in Rwanda.
Also very interesting information regarding the participation of Rwandan soldiers in the First World War under German command.

Outside you can see the snakes: among them being Black Mambas, Pythons and Adders.

Reptile exhibit interesting, museum small and not so informative or large

Welcoming and enthusiastic staff greeted us as we entered the museum just a short (but not flat...after all this is Rwanda) walk from the car free central zone. The house is unassuming and the exhibits inside not especially informative, some interesting photos but little more. We did not get a proper guided tour (as some others mention in reviews). The temporary reptile exhibit does have some genuinely quite impressive species (e.g a black mamba!), enclosures a little small for the bigger snakes but welfare wasn't immediately a concern. Overall, Kigali isn't blessed with a huge amount of tourist attractions so if you have a day to spend before or after a flight then it certainly worth a short visit but do not expect much more.

Hier wird die Kolonialzeit Ruandas beleuchtet

Ruanda hat eine sehr wechselhafte Kolonialzeit hinter sich. Im Kandt House wird diese beleuchtet. Da auch früher auch ein Erdkundliches Museum hier Platz hatte, gibt es auch nicht verschiedene Schlangen zu bewundern.

If you are interested to know how and why Kigali became the capital of Rwanda, this is the place to start. The guide we had was sensational. She talked for almost an hour and taught us many things about the town and about the country. It may be boring for some, especially for children, but for us it was exactly what we had been looking for. I think I paid RWF 10,000 (I am an expat) and my girlfriend (Rwandese) paid RWF 2,000.

Unscheinbares Gebäude, aber sehr gute und ausführliche Führung

Das Haus des ersten deutschen Gouverneurs von Kigali ist aus europäischer Sicht zwar nicht sehr eindrucksvoll. Es gibt aber eine gute Ausstellung und vor allem eine exzellente Führung über die präkoloniale, koloniale und postkoloniale Geschichte Ruandas mit vielen Photos von den ersten Expeditionen, die ein Bild von Ruanda vor Ankunft der Europäer vermitteln.

This is a depressing museum in more ways than one.
It provides an important reminder of the terrors of colonialism.

But it's very minimal and those poor snakes are not in good conditions. And someone needs to rescue the crocodile.

I'll agree with the other reviews that state that it's an interesting-looking house and has great views.

Interessanter Ort, die Geschichte Ruandas im frühen 20, Jh. kennenzulernen

Das ehemalige Wohnhaus von Richard Kandt wurde zum Museum umgewidmet, sehr informativ, was es da über Kolonialismus, 1. Weltkrieg und die Instrumentalisierung der Einwohner durch deutsche und belgische Kolonialherren zu erfahren gibt.

Ebenso über Kandt und seine durchaus nicht "kolonialherrliche" Einstellung.

Nicht zuletzt ein schöner Ort, um sich Kigali auf seinen Hügeln mal von oben anzuschauen. Herr Kandt hatte ein gutes Händchen, als er den Platz für sein Haus gewählt hat.

Very good guide to Rwanda's earlier history

We had an hour's guide which was very interesting and informative on the early history of Rwanda. The only downside is the reptile exhibit - which is not really anything to do with the museum but needs a mention as the conditions that the snakes are being held in are terrible. No need to have it there - please re-house the snakes to a zoo or somewhere else - it adds nothing to the museum and in fact detracts from the excellent tour.
