We went on a pretty sunny day, to the pools. They were realllly clear and very very deep. There were waves that hit the boarder but they didn’t reach us, a little more wind and they would so watch out. There was a worrying sign before we went down, but we still continued and there were people so that made us feel better. Go only on a sunny non-windy day because it could be dangerous. But it was beautiful and worth the drive, we came from the blowhole and after the pools we went to a small quiet town where Julia’s famous banana bread which is a self-operated business is, and it’s really good, especially the guava, chips and bread. The road to the town is really narrow and a ONE LANE ROAD!! Be careful and aware of cars coming from the other direction cuz that will not be good. The photos I put are from the blowhole. Overall we had an amazing day and we recommend ;)

1. Only drive clockwise to here, from kaanapali, then finish the loop still going clockwise. Parts of road are 1 lane and very steep/twisty/killer dropoffs with no guardrail. Some of those stretches are so long that it would be a big problem to meet a car going the other way. There are occasional doublewide spots but someone would have to back up a long way, to reach one.
2. Parking lot is small.
3. Overlook to pools is pretty but it is a steep trail to there.
4. After you walk down to overlook the pools, you are only halfway, and it is still much further down to actually get all the way down.
5. There are memorials to the dead, ecplaining why you shouldnt go down to the pools. to them.

Close to the Nakalele Blowhole, this is a great stop off the highway for more experienced hikers accustomed to some scrambling.

The parking area is not marked, so make sure you know where this is located prior to driving there. The hike down is not easy and requires a bit of scrambling; sturdy shoes are a must. However, once you're down there, the pools are calm and cool! They are a beautiful turquoise blue color and very still. Their depths range from a few inches to several feet.

Two notes on safety.

First, be aware of the weather. We heard and read that the pools are dangerous, but that was NOT our experience (and we brought our two toddlers with us); the sun was out, the pools were calm, and we never felt unsafe. However, in inclement weather, I can see how these pools could be hazardous. Many of the fatalities and injuries at these pools occurred when tourists were either participating in risky behaviors (climbing the nearby lava cliffs), doing the hike when physically not prepared or inexperienced in scrambling, and not being smart about checking tides. If the weather is bad/tides are coming in, don't go here.

Second, a few reviews mention how "dangerous" the road is when driving counterclockwise; that is 100% untrue. As long as you're driving safely, this is a great drive with wonderful views! We drove it both ways and didn't notice a difference in safety.

Check the weather, wear good shoes, and have fun at these pools!

This is a great little unmarked hike to a gorgeous overlook of some pools and the north side of Maui. You can walk down as far as you want or go out on some ledges to get some truly magnificent views of the area. The parking lot is unmarked so make sure you know where you are going.

Someone recently posted about traveling counterclockwise on this highway, from Wailuku to Lahaina. i would never recommend driving that direction, as this road is extremely narrow and you could very easily drive off the cliff. Several cars have gone off the cliffs over the years. Please be careful and always drive clockwise on this highway!

This is a good stop for people traveling counterclockwise to Lahaina and West Maui, close by the more interesting Blowhole. But it is nothing like the beautiful “Queen’s Bath” on Kaua’i to which it is often compared, lacking that spot’s polished black lava stone and ocean grandeur. Named for the green volcanic stone that is mixed into the rock here, the pools are not large and they have a rather ugly color that does not photograph well. But a nice and relatively safe place to cool off in a part of Maui that has no safe beaches.

This place is probably great in the summer but we went in Jan and I would not recommend sitting in the pools this time of year. The waves are too high and will totally sweep you away. We didn't go all the way down as the ocean was pretty rough when we went but the pools are beautiful to look at. A little rough to get out there but not bad.

This is a very cool place. However, the hike down is not easy and once you get there it is somewhat dangerous as a big wave could easily knock you into the sea (and has done so killing people). So if you go be aware and keep children very close. Laying in the pool with the waves crashing nearby was a wonderful experience.

This attraction is a must do! You have to hike down to the coast but it’s easier than the nearby Nakalele blowhole.

It’s an experience unlike any other I had across the whole island of Maui. You can literally go sit in pools right next to where the waves are ferociously pounding the rocks just feet away. It’s somewhat intimidating because you still need to be safe and every once in a while there’s a much larger wave than there normally is.

Be careful where you sit/walk in the pools because there’s areas where it drops off and becomes very deep. This attraction is certainly not for the faint hearted but it should definitely be on your list if you’re feeling adventurous.

Lastly, the pools are incorrectly pinned on Trip Advisor’s map, so use Google Maps.

Quite frankly, I am stunned that this gorgeous location has not received all 5 star reviews! Breathtaking views of the black lava rocks and cliffs with the surf pounding and white foam spraying. Soooooo many photos and videos taken here! This is worth a visit just for the views - no need to get in the pools (can be dangerous). Just go!
