Birding in Belize with Paradise Expeditions offers an exceptional birding experience, comfortable lodging, and authentic, delicious Belizian cuisine. The Tut family owns this operation, and our tour was personalized by Jeronie. Our guide for the week was Eric Tut whose expertise is truly remarkable. On the weeklong trip, Eric shared his extensive knowledge of Belize's best birding spots first at Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, then around their Crystal Paradise Resort in San Ignacio. He ensured targeted sightings of many endemic species. His ability to identify birds by sight and sound, along with his keen eye for locating elusive individuals, showcased his excellent birding skills. Whether you're a seasoned birder or a beginner, Eric's passion and professionalism elevate the tour, making it an unforgettable adventure for any nature enthusiast. We also had an overnight trip to Guatemala arranged by Jeronie to Tikal with a combination private historical tour of the Mayan ruins and birding in the National Park. We saw 208 species and 64 lifers in our 7 day visit. Highly recommended!

This is a fascinating place for birdwatchers. In less than 2 hours of just walking around the grounds of Bird's Eye View Lodge, I added about 40 species to my life list.

Took a great boat ride in the rain and recorded 51 bird species during our trip. It was fantastic and lunch afterward was a wonderful way to end the day! Highly recommend a visit, even if not a brder!

We booked a tour through TripAdvisor thinking there were government-funded guides. Instead, we were connected to the Bird's Eye View Lodge where they provided us with a one-hour walking tour.
The tour guide was fantastic and we saw a lot of birds and other wildlife during the tour, but the list price was $10.
If you are interested in seeing more birds for a longer period of time, you would need to contact the Lodge and reserve a spot on the 6:30 AM boat tour. The Sanctuary and Lodge are about 90 minutes from Belize City, making an early morning drive impossible.

This is basically just a small, rundown town on an island in wetlands. Yes, there are waterbirds about, but there's basically no trails or blinds - you just drive or walk around the town's streets. It feels a bit weird to be out with telephoto lenses wandering amongst people's homes (especially when many are just dilapidated shacks, with limited privacy to begin with).
I'm told it's quite different in the dry season, when the surrounding lake waters recede substantially and many shore trails appear. But that's a very narrow window of just a few weeks around March.
A 4WD vehicle with decent clearance is necessary, at least when I was there after some light rain. There were ruts and potholes nearly a foot deep in many of the roads, most flooded with water, and made out of soft mud. Even with the diffs locked I nearly got stuck a couple of times, for lack of traction or from bottoming out.
As someone from California this was extra disappointing because nearly all the species I saw are native & prolific in Californian anyway (e.g. Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Blue Herons), where there's much better parks & reserves and amenable weather year-round.
If you're a birder and you're already passing by on the northern highway, this might be worth a brief detour just to try your luck - maybe you'll see something rare. But I wouldn't go here otherwise.

We decided last minute to visit as we were driving from Orange Walk to Belize City. The small visitor center was open and provided a map. We were told it was best to see birds by boat but that was not available. It was not a good experience for our family because we are not birders and didn't know where to look. We saw some interesting birds but didn't know what they were. It would have been much better if we had a guide or went on a tour.

We stayed at the Bird’s Eye View Lodge. Excellent lodging, very knowledgeable birding guides. Lots of other activities, including Mayan Ruins. A place worth going back to.

Although Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary was not on our official itinerary, our guide indulged me and stopped for about 45 minutes. From one waterside spot, we literally saw about 40 bird species in that short time. Several were life birds for me---including the magnificent Jabiru stork. I cannot recommend Crooked Tree enough---especially for birdwatchers. I will definitely return and spend a LOT more time there.

We are stopping into Belize City on a cruise and we are looking for a tour company that would offer a day birding trip to CTWS. Which tour company did you use to go there? Thanks for your time!
