We booked a full day of flats fishing with GoFish Belize in October 22. It was okay. We caught quite a few small bonefish.
The good: guide showed up on time at our hotel - 7am. He told us some stories about how he and his 5 brothers have been fishing Ambergis Caye for their lifetimes. He drove us to Crab Caye and we started fishing for bonefish. He just looked for the disturbed mud along the bottom and had us cast into it. We caught bonefish. This is what we did all day. He obviously knew the area well. The boat was nice and all in good condition.
The bad: the guide had no gear - no fly rods or reels or tippet, but he did have some very old fly boxes with some old flies. He said his brother had stole most of them from his bag. He did bring some old spinning gear and said we could go trolling out by the reef for red snapper. This is weird since we specifically asked for fly fishing only.
Despite the fact that we also wanted to fish for tarpon for half the day, he said that area was too far away and gas cost too much to go there. He said we would have needed to get up in the dark to go there. None of this was ever communicated to us beforehand.
He told us lots of stories about how expensive everything is, about how young his wife is, about how his friend borrowed his boat and wouldn't give it back, about his nonfunctioning outboard motor, about how his clients want him to work too hard, etc. He did not talk much about fishing or Belize or really anything much of interest.
I have no idea if this guy is the main fly fishing guide for GoFish Belize. We were originally scheduled to go out with a different guide.
So, overall, if we wanted to go out and catch only bonefish for the day and listen to a guy complain about everything, it was good. He was nice enough. If we wanted a top-notch guided experience with good gear, good stories, excitement and a diversity of fish species to cast to, this was not it, although they charge those rates. We would not book him again.
