This tour is a treat if you like history and all its accoutrements. These reception rooms are full of historical items and a delight to behold. There are all sizes of rooms and all are opulently furnished.

My group was small, so our guide was able to give us more in depth information. And an event set-up was in progress during the tour, so we saw first-hand how everything was set up.

My benchmark is this: if you enjoyed Mt. Vernon, you'll love the tour.

Best of all...it's free! But arrive early as you must go through security.

As locals for decades and having taken advantage of all the DMV has to offer, this tour was one of few remaining places we had not yet visited.

Tours must be booked in advance online or via the phone number listed on the site. Even with a confirmation email, potential visitors must realize that tours can be cancelled with little or no advance notice (due to diplomatic functions) so I strongly advise that you call or email the day of your visit to confirm.

The tour has potential although most of the information was devoted solely to the furnishings instead of the actual goings-on in the areas in which we ventured.

Moreover, The Martha Washington Ladies Lounge and the Walter Thurston Gentleman's Lounge – both located off one of the hallways we walked down were ignored,
and the omission of any information/history about either was a gaping hole in the tour. Because neither lounge was roped off or designated “off limits” it was frustrating that visitors were not encouraged to even peek in……….

Having been to multiple plantations, historic homes and venues in the area, this tour failed to make the visit special. Visitors should attach other local sites to this tour to avoid disappointment and quite frankly, a waste of time.

The most positive part of our tour was that security and tour staffers were pleasant and professional.

The highest levels of diplomacy are carried out in these rooms which contain truly special pieces of American history from the period 1750-1825. There are remarkable collections of china, furniture, paintings, rugs and documents. Our docent, Chic, was outstanding. The entire collection has been donated or is on loan. This special set of rooms is well worth a visit.

I had the opportunity to visit the rooms as part of a conference I was attending, and what an experience! These rooms are laden with luxe furnishings and art, and have been the backdrop of countless important, if not critical, conversations between heads of state. The tour director provides interesting history about the contents of the rooms, and tour goers get to see items such as the Treaty of Paris desk. Anyone can book a tour and take photographs of the rooms and their furnishings.

If you have an interest in where the Diplomats meet at the Department of State, this is a 45 minute tour for you.
Apply to visit, online, in advance.
You will learn about and see period furniture and art. The rooms are beautiful. And you will learn a little history as well.

We booked this tour through our Representatives office. Our docent, Chantal, was very gracious and knowledgeable explaining in intricate detail about the furniture, artwork and decor in each room. Younger kids may be bored with looking at furniture or art, but I felt a deep sense of pride and awe. Woodwork was intricate, dishes were rare and beautiful, many of the paintings captured life in early America. You would never know from the outside of the building just how beautifully decorated the inside is.

We were granted a tour due to having a friend who works in security and it was truly wonderful to see the history, and where State functions occur. If you can get a tour, definitely do!

This tour needs to be booked on their website well in advance, but it is definitely worth the trouble! The rooms are beautiful and full of history, and I highly recommend it!

Not too many folks know about the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the Department of State. The rooms are used for entertaining and are filled with 18th and 19th century furniture and paintings. All the rooms are beautiful in their own way and have features to please everyone. This 1 hour tour was a highlight of our trip.

I registered for the US Department of State Diplomatic Reception Rooms tour twice, as the first confirmed tour was cancelled the day before my flight departure due to “events planned after your request was made or other security requirements within the building”. As such, I requested another day and time which was luckily confirmed before departure.

The armed security guards were the lowlight of the tour, they give an impression that they are worth more than they are. I found the tour very informative, the guide was clear in her presentation, and I found the pace was just right. Our group consisted of just six tourists, the tour guide and security guard, and the best thing is you are allowed pictures!
