The Ladies on duty today were very helpful. Taught me a lot about History of African American I did not know. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. Carried the information back and shared it with many others. I did forget to ask what the area of apartment houses were called. Unfortunately I got a new phone and lost all my pictures.

This house was the location of Mary McLeod Bethune's National Council of Negro Women until 1966. She founded the organization and Bethune-Cookman college and hosted many famous dignitaries and civil rights leaders at this house while she managed the Council.
The House is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There is a free half hour tour of two of the floors of the House, which has several original pieces of furniture and many photos of McLeod Bethune. It does not take long to visit this site and it is worth visiting to learn this important history.

A hero of the civil rights movement, and an example of the role that courageous women have played in the "strive for justice." Decades before Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. Bethune was able to make important progress. This is a shrine to courage and persistance.

Once you get there, it's worth the trip to visit. For some reason, the NPS doesn't list the hours on their website. Just to help others, the House is open from 1000-1400 Thursday to Saturday with tours on the top of the hour. So, onto the highlights.
To fully understand the historic significance of this house, you should take both the ranger led tour here along with the Smithsonian Museum of African American history. The tour is very informative and you learn more than even at the NMAAHC due to the small tour size and ability to ask more questions of the park ranger. Small gift shop with some neat items.
Recommend visiting this great piece of American history and then grab some lunch or dinner at Arepazone.

The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House is quant and worth visiting just for the architecture let alone the deep history about her work! I suggest the tour.

This National Historic Site administered by the National Park Service preserves the home of Mary McLeod Bethune and commemorates her life and the service of the National Council of Negro Women. It's a pretty quick tour, and while there's nothing particularly noteworthy, it's interesting to learn its history.

The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House is located on Vermont Avenue near Logan Circle. It is also a stop of historic Logan circle self-guided tour. The house is preserved to honor Mary McLeod Bethune; a renowned black educator and politician. The house has long history of black community movement, especially in education and black women development. According to the history, many Head of States visited this house for various reasons. The house now is owned and operated as museum. Although it is currently closed for renovation, visitors can still walk around to take pictures and to peak inside the windows to see the glimpse of the house.

I visited the Mary McLeod Bethune House and was so inspired. She was so influential to Black women and Black people as a whole. She dedicated her life to educating, encouraging, fighting for rights and building relationships to continue that work. It was on my list of places to visit and I got so excited, I forgot to call for an appointment. Thankfully, no appointment was needed. I was greeted when I rang the buzzer and Virginia, came down to give me a tour of this awesome place!! I looked at the artifacts on the first floor, watched the video of Ms McLeod Bethune's last speech and found it inspiring. I also saw the announcement of the Carter G. Woodson House that will be opening in the near future.
On the second floor, you'll find the lodging used to help women and the places where they held meetings. It was VERY informative via the guide, the information on the walls and brochures in the foyer. You will love this bit of history. IT IS FREE. Please hurry though, as they will be closing this house soon, for two years, to update and add a climate control system. You can also visit their business office: National Council of Negro Women, at 633 Pennsylvania Ave NW. I really enjoyed my visit and will be back to DC to visit the Woodson House, as he was her neighbor and friend.

We rang the buzzer and announced our arrival. A young man welcomed us and told us about the two floors that were open to the public. There's a gift store, and a video with exceptionally clear audio of a speech that Mrs. Bethune had given. Large photographs marking events, showing her interaction with heads of state. Interesting stories about her life on the walls.
The building has some very special details, curly maple inlay on the front doors and some wainscoting; designs carved on the sides of the steps; decorative elements around the central ceiling lights, and elsewhere.
It's great to step into the space where important events took place, and were developed. What a powerful woman she was!

What a brilliant woman Mary must have been! A visionary whose ideas and influence were "beyond her time". Adviser to four US Presidents, and founder of a school (she convinced Rockefeller to serve on the board) and organizer of women, civil rights leaders and entertainment spokespersons. A small number of exhibits, but to be in this historic building is a treat!
While the video is not of modern production standards, it does demonstrate the gift Mary hasd at public speaking!
This rarely visited National Park is closing in a few weeks for extensive renovations. When it reopens, it will be paired with the neighboring National Park, the Carter Woodson home. Fascinating to hear of these two thought leader relationship--neighbors and brilliant colleagues. And loved hearing how Martin Luther King would sit at Mary's Council table to discuss ideas, but couldn't join her "for women only" organization. Fascinating that he too came to Mary for her savvy advice.
According to the Park Ranger who provided historical context and commentary for our visit, very few people visit this Park--which puts it at risk of closing. We were fortunate that an informative, caring guide was host of the house on the day we visited--but she is normally stationed at the Anaconstia Frederick Douglass house. We had the pleasure of hearing her tour since we came to visit on a Sunday.
Visitors should scurry to get inside before the house closes for renovation. And call ahead if you visit after November 14, to see if it is still open or not.

Is it difficult to find parking for this National Park Sight and is there free parking?

There's parking on the street out front. I think it's metered but can't remember.
Also, please please check out the times from my review. I would hate to see you show up and it be closed.
