I really wish I could give The Dark Side of Tallinn Tours a stellar review. There is every chance you will have a wonderful experience on this tour. But I did not. Our tour was basically canceled at the last minute with a very unfair explanation.
Trip Advisor is set up to warn travelers about potential problems. So I have to warn you, you may be left in the dark too!
The tour owner, Viktor, is an honorable businessman who admitted he double booked our tour guide. We booked first (6 months ago) but the second booking was apparently through a cruise ship. Since cruise ship business can make or break a tour operator, We got bumped.
Viktor personally met me at the start of my tour and offered me a free tour that he personally would lead to make up for his mistake. He spent two hours showing us Tallinn.
The problem was Viktor is not a guide and does not have the knowledge of Tallinn or our tour subject (The KGB) we deserved.
I thank Viktor for his efforts to correct his mistake.
There is also every chance my tour cancellation will be the only time it ever happens to Viktor. But, Viktor probably knew he double booked my tour guide days or weeks ago and he did not tell me. He waited until I was on my way to the tour to contact me. I never had the opportunity to book a standby tour. He left me in the dark.
It just wouldn’t be fair to Trip Advisor users if I gave this tour a better rating than poor.

Hello,
I apologise for how the things worked out for you and for not getting the tour you signed up for and deserved.
However, bumping you for a cruise operator group is not why the tour got cancelled. We're a small business and don't run tours all day every day and our guides freelance for other tour operators. Our guide got a booking request from a cruise ship in the morning and failed to notice your booking in the calendar. By the time I found out about it (about 9:30am, 1h before the tour), she was out on the tour and there's nothing I could do about it but to send you the email and came to meet you in person to try to make the best of the bad situation.
This obviously doesn't change your negative experience. It's 100% our fault and it's extremely embarrassing.
I just wanted to make clear that I did not bump you for a higher paying client at the last moment. We're financially independent and this isn't the primary or even secondary income for me or the guides, but a passion project to offer something different to small groups and couples like you. Cruise ship business won't make or break us, but negative reviews here might.
I apologise again for this unfortunate outcome.

We went on the ghost tour, the whole trip was to walk around in old town and listening to stories about famous ghost legends. It was very interesting, but not very spooky. We were outside the whole time, and it was very cold, so would reccomend to put on some extra clothes. The guide was very nice, and funny. But i was expecting way more.

La carcel esta ubicada a pocos minutos del centro, se puede llegar en bus o en el bus turistico. Las instalaciones quedaron abandonadas y todo quedo igual a como estaba en esa epoca. Se puede visitar con guia o uno mismo puede recorrer todo, no hay lugar al que no se pueda acceder, queda a criterio de cada uno lo que quiera ver.
A pocos metros de la carcel esta ubicado un museo maritimo el cual es muy lindo e interesante, se pueden sacar fotos vestido con ropa militar o de marino y luego te la envias sin cargo por mail. Se pueden hacer ambas visitas en el mismo dia. Recomendable para hacer algo diferente

This has to be the best tour I have been to. Great guide, with in depth knowledge in the communist era.

My wife and I took this tour recently. The guide was very informative and enthusiastic but the tour took 2 1/2 hours which was twice as long as it was supposed to take. We were starving by the time the tour ended at 8:30. The tour is more of a general prison tour, as opposed to one focused on Soviet/Nazi operations.
It's located next door to the Seaplane Museum so it's easy to do the two together. You won't see much, though, unless you take the tour.

Without the guide, the prison is just a slightly creepy old building with great street art. With a guide, the building comes to life and you can imagine how horrible prison life must have been. The guide has a great sense of humor that may be considered on the mature side, so maybe not 100% suited for young children/really sensitive people.

This tour is great for anyone who is interested in or wants to learn more about what life in a Soviet prison was like. The guide was very informative and since we were on a tour we were allowed access to parts of the prison off limits to other visitors. It's a shame that this is soon to be closed to the public. Just a note, our guide did swear quite a bit. I didn't mind this since I think it suited the tour, but just something to bear in mind if that would be a problem for you.

This tour is a must do - explore the hidden areas of the prison with a local expert. Brings the horrors of the various regimes clearly into focus. Originally built as a castle it was used as an army garrison before being converted to a prison. The legacy of the prison burns most brightl. You can look around a smaller section of the prison without a guide - which is still interesting, but that section is now more of an area for local artists. That is worth doing, but don't miss out on this tour to get a deeper understanding of the prison, city and country.

This is Tallinn's former prison. Built in Tsarist Russian times, used by the Nazi's on the 1940s and then the Communists. It wasn't shut down until 2005.
And now it stands empty. I guess no one knows what to do with it. It appears parts of it were used for an art exhibition a few years ago (lots of graffiti)
You can pay €3 and wander around or go on a guided tour for €8. I think there are two different tour groups. Both can be found online. We went on a 6:15 pm tour, in English which was informative and interesting although his English was a little stilted.
As Estonia is in the EU I fail to see how this place is allowed to remain open - it's a huge health hazard. But that's what makes it interesting.
It's a thought provoking and moving experience.
Nice walk to and from town along the coast (20 mins) and there is a small bar/cafe around the back. There is also a tasteless (in my opinion) CCCP shop in the grounds. Not appropriate.
Definitely worth going to and I doubt it will be open like this for much longer. Makes you glad you don't live under a dictatorship.
