I stayed at a camp in a ranch; saw wild dogs, lots of elephants, giraffe, lion, etc. The exciting part for me was being in an area that permitted hiking, white water rafting, overnights under the stars, etc. Also very quiet with few other tourists.

Laikipia District is now famous for its well protected population of both white and black rhinos. All of the big five are resident there as well as cheetahs and a growing population of wild dogs.
One can also see grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and much else. The place offers a wide range of activities because it is not in a National Park. They include walking, fly camping and night drives.
I have stayed in Laikipia twice and will undoubtedly be returning. I stayed at Kicheche Laikipia Camp and Laikipia Wilderness Camp. I had a great experience at both of them and I feel that they are both excellent camps.
However, if I had to choose I much prefer Laikipia Wilderness Camp. It is in a much less developed area. There are no evidence of those hideous cattle troughs which scar the landscape around Laikipia Kicheche Camp. There is no chimp sanctuary nearby nor Adnan Khashoggi's house so one feels that they are truly in the wild. I also have to stress that the property is unfenced.

Waanzinnig mooi gebied, out of the box ervaring. Unieke beesten, niet de standaard safari ervaring!!

I was working with the Samburu tribeup in northern Laikipia and was shuttling between Nanyuki, Kinamba and Rimuruti. The hospitality of the Samburu is humbling. It seems the poorer you are, the cleaner your clothes and your dwelling. The school children in Kinamba were turned out spotlessly and the flora and fauna were wild, natural and appealing.
If you can stay out of the Laikipea Game Reserve you'll see giraffe, lion and elephant, nd the dik-dik and various types of zebra in their free, roaming environment - much more rewarding.
Ravel is safe in a 4 x 4 and Nanyuki has modern supermarkets, banks and petrol stations.

I spent 3 nights at Laikipia. The hotel is nothing I expected. The rooms were clean and spacious, and the hotel staff including the manager were always visible and friendly. The location allowed me to have a foretaste of the little town, and I could walk into the little town, to the Catholic Church, and a lovely craft shop called Marleen Crafts. The banks were also in walking distance.
