Lower Kalimna Fall, Lorne

Well worth the trip, the track leading to it can be quite muddy in winter so make sure you’re wearing appropriate footwear unlike myself at the time but so glad I went

Fantastic falls, well worth the walk!
set 2019
The upper falls are some 4.1km from the car park. These are OK. The better falls are the lower ones, which are closer, maybe 3km.
You can walk behind the falls which is very cool.
The long walk in is easy, it follows an old tram line. Being long it doesn't get a lot of traffic.

Great walk, moderate level and you can do a round trip rather than returning on the same path. Upper falls was officially closed but you could still walk on the path

Lovely little spot for a lunch or picnic and a swim

We went here for a short walk during a hot summer day. The lower falls were a much welcome relief from the heat as it was a few degrees cooler in the cave itself. There was enough of a trickle to make a nice photo despite not having rained for weeks.
The upper falls were not as impressive but the walk was still nice in the ferny forest.

Worth the walk
ott 2018 • Famiglia
Decided to go somewhere different, and after a few minutes drive down Garvey track we arrived at Sheoaks car park. Pleasantly surprised to find very clean portaloos. We walked the 6km round trip to Lower Kalimantan Falls and back. The walk is not too technical, and fairly flat. It would be quite wet here when it rains a lot. The falls were lovely and we could walk behind the falls in the cave.
Glad we visited, and will do the Upper Falls next time.

Lower Kalimna Falls

Lower Kalimna Falls is one of my favourite waterfall to visit. Located in Sheoak Pinic Area, about 3-4 km out of Lorne, follow the dirt road from QDOS Art Gallery and you will get to Sheoak Picnic Area.

The walk is about 45-50 minutes to the Lower Falls and there are some gentle inclines so some level of fitness is required. The track also has some obstacles and can be muddy and slippery. The scenery is beautiful surrounding the track and you can sometimes see some of the local wildlife.

The Lower Kalimna Falls is amazing. Below the falls is a naturally carved out rock canopy allowing you to walk under and behind the waterfall itself. It is such a beautiful and relaxing spot. Best time to come is just after it has rained so that the falls have a bit more water flowing.

Recommend taking plenty of water, some energy snacks for the walk, good walking shoes and a wet weather jacket. There are BBQ and picnic facilities located in the carpark area along with toilets. Drinking water is not available and no bins are provided so rubbish needs to be taken home with you.

Nice Falls and Nice Walk
apr 2018 • Coppie
For people who enjoy a good walk and an explore, this is the spot to visit. Myself and my partner walked to Lower Kalimna falls and weren't disappointed. It was a nice walk down through rainforest-like environment down a small trail. We went to see the falls at the end of Summer so there wasn't much water flow however still a beautiful spot. I enjoyed the walk back up! You feel quite refreshed after it. It took us probably an hour in total, to walk down, spend time at the falls, and do the return walk uphill. I would not suggest this activity for anyone who may struggle with a good 5km walk.

We were lucky to visit the falls after the area had a little bit of rain. Very pretty but better after some rain.

Kalimna Falls

Kalimna Falls is yet another great waterfall walk you can do in and around the otways.
Even though I live near the area and have visited most the waterfalls I actually hadn't heard of this one until yesterday. I left home arrived at Kalimna Falls at about 10:30am. The easiest way to get there is from Lorne and you'll have to travel some distance on an unsealed road that's guaranteed to make it inadvisable to open up any softdrink in your car for at least half an hour. In some spots the road becomes very narrow and signs are up stating only one car at a time on the sections. The road is easily done with a car but if you have a 4WD I would take that instead. There are a couple of access points for the walk. The first one you come to on the left with signage to it is the most popular and has toilets but the walk is a little longer (2.4k). I travelled up another couple of k's and pulled over on the side of the road on the next signed spot. From here the walk was just over 1km long to the lower falls. The path down is dirt and when I went had a few trees down that you either had to climb over or under to continue. The walk down was fairly easy with the exception of a couple of steep parts that try out your knees. Walking along this track surrounded by bushland it suddenly opened up and there were the falls.
I went on a dry day about 24 degrees Celcius. The walk took me about 15 minutes of steady paced walking. There was only one other couple down there when I arrived.
The waterfall was only flowing slightly due to dry conditions last few days but there was still enough water flowing to get a few good pictures. There's a semi cave area semi-circling the waterfalls which fall into an almost pond like pool. Ive heard that some people do take dips here but the water was Brown and I could see alot of branches below the surface so I skipped doing that. After spending about 20 minutes here I walked back up the track towards the Upper Kalimna Falls. It took me another 20 minutes of steady walking to reach the Upper Falls with the path becoming quite narrow with steep drops along the way.
The Upper Kalimna Falls is viewable from a small viewing platform although there were people there that had jumped the platform and gained closer access I wouldn't advise it.
The upper Falls was not quite as impressive even though they fell from a much greater height and if I were to do it again I'd probably skip the upper falls.
A few tips if you do go;
The walk back is torturous being mainly uphill and even though it was only 24 degrees I was dripping with sweat.
The walk to lower falls took me 15 minutes.
The walk to upper Falls from lower falls took me 20 minutes and the walk back to the car probably took me 20 minutes aswell so allow over an hour for a return trip allowing for photography stops and resting.
The road there is shocking.
If it had been raining the day or two prior I would not have gone because it would be very muddy and slippery.
I would not take young kids or anyone with crook knees on this walk.
Go earlier in the morning as it gets busy in the afternoon and if there's more then one other couple there you will find it hard to get good photo shots.
