What an excellent venue,well worth the visit, very clean and well maintained.The story of how it was built in Shanghai dismantled and transported to Dunedin where it was Rebuilt is quite extraodinary .

Do it once, do it right

One of our (4) friends is a quasi Chinese history buff! And he was the instigator of this
South Island trip..
$10, entry .. Upkeep, maintenance, is not for cheap…personally, $15 entry fee, would be appropriate… !!!
But I ask myself… WHY WAS IT NOT ON A BIGGER SITE !!!
To me, it is like to having a full sized dinner, plated on a “ lunch plate”!!!
Too cramped, and unable to display with emotive expression something that is unique
But, what I saw, was historical in some content… the fotos were informative!
The video gave snapshots of people involved over that period… and spent more
time watching the video, than the garden itself!
The garden, was/ is, a “ rockery”.. different natural shaped boulders, that was meant
to represent something.. what, I don’t know.. I have no eye for beauty!
A 15+ min stroll along the pathed outskirts of rock, and paths through the foto displays, was finished before I realised.. THATS, IT !!!
The “ rockery “here was a 5 min scene.. the Beijing Summer Palace’s Rockery was almost 2 looking…
A waste of what could have been , something for Dunedin, to crow about!

Rather small but pretty

The garden is not that big but they did have a lot in that small space. I loved the history of the people who came to Dunedin.

Lovely tranquil spot but overpriced entry

This place was genuinely lovely to visit and had some good history, sites to view and photograph spots, but I think asking for $10 per person entry was quite steep. We were over and done with in 15 minutes.

Spectacular
gen 2023
What a delightful gem this tranquil slice of beauty and nature is. Well worth the time, it isn’t very big, so we were able to do after our visit to the Settlers museum which is next door.

Disappointing Visit

I was disappointed when I visited this attraction. I felt it was quite run down and tired, and lack any sort of colour and vibrancy which I was expecting. The staff at the reception desk lacked enthusiasm and on their phones which was disappointing as well.

Beauty in the city

Located just beside the Dunedin Railway Station, this beautiful place is a great example of a Chinese garden. There is a small entry fee and the staff are friendly. The gardens themselves are beautiful with many winding pathways leading to many indoor and outdoor rooms, balconies and courtyards, all of which surrounding a lovely pond. It is quite playful in design with one area built around a makeshift‘mountain’ but even though it is a place you can bring your children, this is a place of beauty and serenity so treat with respect and care. There are stunning plants on display as well as a tearoom and conference facility. Only thing I can fault is the bridge that goes across on of the ponds - it looked too concrete and unfinished compared to much of the rest of the gardens structures. 30-45 minutes to visit.

A small oasis

The DUNEDIN CHINESE GARDENS (adjacent to the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum) are well worth the $10 pp entrance fee. We spent an enjoyable hour and a half in the tranquility of koi ponds, lattice windows, and curved pagoda roofs, and learned a lot about how the Chinese community was part of the evolution of Dunedin.
