During our recent visit to Auckland, we decided to do a walking tour along the Viaduct to see some of what Auckland has to offer. We made our way to the Wynyard Quarter, which offers plenty of dining options and wonderful views of the city.
An easy walk, you can continue to the Silo Park, which showcases turning industrial areas into public park and recreational spaces for families to use. Keep walking further down the Viaduct and you come across a wonderful collection of historical sailing boats dating back to the 1800's. Highlighting the skill and craftmanship used when creating these beautiful vessels. Highly recommend if you have time to take a casual walk and see some of the highlights of the area.

Our hotel was situated a short walk away from Wynyard Quarter.

This waterfront area is located between between Viaduct Harbour and Westhaven Marina is the waterfront area. This formwe port area has been transformed into a hip and modern additionto Viaduct Harbour.

This area is full of lively bars and restaurants. We dined at several during our stay including the Aucklasnd Fish Markets.

You can even take a ride around the Wynyard Loop on an authentic 1920s Auckland tram.

Its a good area to hang out.

Where to start. A four star hotel…. That is more like a motel. No restaurant or bar on site… nothing more than basic motel coffee and tea facilities provided.
Provided is a small set menu for breakfast, delivered in a paper bag. No.. this is not an MIQ facility.
Positive, parking and security is good, and the shower is amazing. But everything else is mediocre at best.
Before all that though….. dirty. There were greasy finger prints on the fridge, and food stained finger prints on the microwave. Not at all okay. We will, never recommend

7km run 🏃🏼‍♂️ through the beautiful waterfront. Weaving though the wharves there are some great boats to see. Modern architecture and vast shared space. Such a great area.

After a day out on a boat. Enjoyable to spend some time in the Wynyard Quarter. Had a meal and drinks. Can be expensive, but is a more upmarket area. Surprises it was dead by midnight.

This was a nice walk, with restaurants etc. The area appears to be under regeneration and it will be interesting to see what it is like in another few years time, as it could be made to be fantastic.

One improvement would be better signage for tourists, as it seems to be a bit of a dead end when you reach there and it’s not immediately obvious how to get to the Westhaven Promenade, if you want to walk towards the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

When you are told we are going into Auckland for the day. Alarm bells ring and you immediately think of Motorways, Traffic and finding a parking space. The equation gets even mor murky when it is Boxing Day and shopping is mentioned. You think what have I done to deserve this.

We set off from the coast in the Cleveland area. The route we took was not towards the Motorway but to Pine Harbour. It was an enjoyable drive, as I hadn't been out that way before and the real plus, I wasn't driving.

At Pine Harbour our arrival was timed to embark onto a Ferry leaving for Down Town Auckland. Now, I was really getting enthused. I had never never been on that Ferry before.

We set off, the sea was sparkling like diamonds, with just a slight ripple. Clouds were skittering across the blue skiy.

The Trip took about 35 minutes and I saw parts of Auckland I had never seen before. It was a really enjoyable trip.

What made it better was it cost me nothing. The boat conductor a nice young fella looked at me and said have you got one of Winstons cards. It took a minute or two for this young fellow to click onto his wave length. He looked at me as though I was Methuselah. I saw him glance at my wife also, but I wont go down that road.

I told him I had a Gold Card and he advised as well as that I needed an Auckland Transport Gold Hop On Card. He said I should get one before we came back later in the day. I subsquently followed his instructions. A well spent $11.00 and the card lasts for five years.

The Habour had numerous ferries going their busy ways and large numbers of pleasure boats both under sail and motive power. It was a hive of activity.

On reaching the down town Ferry Terminal which was more or less at the bottom of Queen Street we disembarked.

Lots of the buldings were familiar to me and and a lot were not. It had been several years since I had been in that area. My eyes were certainly opened by the massive earth works associated with the proposed rail link.

Also at the wharf terminals, were two large cruise ships. The Ruby Princess and The Majestic Princess. These ships were disgorging tourists right left and centre as well as embarking new passengers. Gee - it was so intresting all of the activity, and we hadn't even been anywhere near the Boxing Day sales. Thank goodness.

We then walked along the waterfront, towards where the Tank Farm used to be. That, had all but been demolished, to make way for the America Cup development. I believe that a small number of the storage tanks will be kept on site to show what it used to look like. So that is neat.

As we were approaching the Draw Bridge - Red lights started flashing and the Bridge started to lift from the centre. Barriers came down to stop people using the Bridge. In due course the Bridge was completely raised and a yacht with a very high mast went through followed by a super yacht of the motor variety. One was going out to the Harbour proper and one coming into the boat harbour which was full of pleasure boats of all shapes and sizes. Once their passage was complete the Bridge was lowered and the hordes of people were allowed to continue on their way.

We passed the Maritme Museum, the Team New Zealand Shop and so many Restaurants you would never starve providing you had the dollars. . However one of the most spectacular and impressive sights was the wharf where the heritage boats were moored.

These boats both launches and yachts, some of which dated back before I was born - now thats a few moons ago - maybe at least 1930's to late 50's +. The vessels had been lovingly restored and appeared in pristine order. They were happily bobbing up and down at their moorings. Well worth the trip just to see them.

What is also impressive is the green areas and rest areas. It is going to be fabulous when area is fully devbeloped and the Cup is raced for. The future looks really bright for Auckland.

I saw how the people at the top of the food chain live. One super yacht looked just about as big as our Navies off shore patrol boats. The crew on this vessel were smartly turned out. There must be millions and millions of dollars tied up to the wharves.
I had my moments of envy and then came back to reality and decided I am happy with my lot in life.

We walked back to the Auckland Fish Market where we had a late lunch of Fish and Chips. They were really enjoyable. I have written a seperate review on that experience.

It was then time to go and get our Auckland Transport Gold Hop on Cards. Mission accomplished.

The Ferry Trip back to Pine Harbour was equally enjoyable - and in the near future we will be looking at more adventures - maybe Waiheke Island and a glass of chardonay or two.

Todays trip was really enjoyable and I highly recommend it. The real plus, not one Boxing Day Sale was visited.

Thanks to our Daughter and Son in Law for such a lovely day.

高級コンドミニアムとヨットが似合うハーバーの街といった感じ。あいにくとクリスマスでほとんどのお店はレストランも含めお休み。

The abundance of cafes and restaurants in the area is making it a very attractive place for a stroll in the sun or a Sunday brunch or dinner, or some of the excellent coffee now available in this country. Admiring the numerous local and overseas yachts of various sizes from the super duper to the humble two-man . Soon there will be the Americas Cup activity. On one side there is the Auckland City skyline and the other the deep blue harbour, and you might even see a multi-million dollar (or should that be billion) super pleasure craft of some Russian businessman. Or maybe some little Maori boys swimming in the area of their whare.
