“A lovely square in the CBD”

Situata ai margini del CBD e della storica zona portuale, Franklin Square con la sua imponente fontana e la statua di John Franklin è un luogo bellissimo e riposante. Offre anche scorci di vista sull'acqua e sul molo. Un sacco di erba e alberi molto maturi, aree lavedute e posti a sedere ne fanno una piccola oasi.

“Oasis in the City”

Piacevole area per rilassarsi un po' se nella zona del CBD, sono stato attratto dalle querce e poi ho scoperto altre delizie dopo essere entrato nel parco. C'è una fontana e un monumento di Sir John Franklin, una grande scacchiera, l'Apex Wishing Well, il Monumento a Crowther, la scultura delle due isole e, mentre uscivo dal monumento di Edoardo V 11 in Macquarie Street. Belle aree erbose e posti a sedere.

A lovely square in the CBD

Located on the edge of the CBD and the historic dockside area, the Franklin Square with its impressive fountain and statue of John Franklin is a beautiful and restful spot. It also offers glimpses of views over the water and the dockside.

Lots of grass and very mature trees, laved areas and seating make it a little oasis.

Pleasant area to relax for a while if in the CBD area, I was attracted it by the oak trees and then discovered other delights after I'd entered the park. There is a fountain and monument of Sir John Franklin, a large Chess Board, the Apex Wishing Well, Crowther Monument, Two Islands Sculpture and, as I exited the monument of Edward V11 on Macquarie Street. Nice grassed areas and seating.

Lovely centrally located square dominated by a statue of Sir John Franklin.

This lovely square sits between the two major one way streets in Hobart (Davey and Macquarie Streets) that separate the CBD from Hobart's historic waterfront. It also fronts onto Elizabeth Street. It appears that the Square was established in the 1860's.

There are a good number of trees in the Square including oaks, English elms and New Zealand evergreens as well as grassed areas and benches for seating. There is also a giant chess board.

In the centre of the Square is a large statue of Sir John Franklin (1786 - 1847) who was an Artic explorer and Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) from 1837-1843. The bronze statue shows Franklin in formal naval attire with cutlass and maybe a telescope in his right hand. The statue sits atop a very high granite plinth which itself is mounted on a sandstone platform that sits inside an elaborate, large water fountain. The plinth includes an epitaph by Lord Tennyson. It appears that the statue was erected around 1865.

There is also another statue, closer to the Macquarie Street entrance. This statue is of the rather controversial Dr William Crowther, a former Premier of Tasmania, who is remembered as the person who mutilated the body of Aboriginal man William Lanne after his death. The head and hands of Crowther's Statute, when we saw it, were covered in red and there was an Aboriginal flag in one hand and a saw in the other.

On the footpath along Macquarie Street, in front of the Square and almost in line with the Statue of Franklin, is a statue of King Edward VII.

Remembering Franklin-Lieutenant Governor of Van Dieman's Land

Franklin Square is a small park between the CBD and Sullivan's Cove and is one of few green places in the city. It has an interesting water feature and a large statue of Franklin (1786-1847) who was and Antarctic explorer and Lieutenant Governor of Van Dieman's Land as Tasmania was then known.

Tranquil Small Square

Tranquil square in the centre of Hobart with a lovely fountain and a statue of John Franklin.
Plenty of long park benches to sit on and lots of shaded areas to choose from.
Nice area to take a carry out coffee and enjoy a snack.
Close to the main shopping centres and restaurants/cafes.

Street eats at Franco’s

So much fun!! We loved seeing people dancing with complete joy!! Great music too, can’t remember there names but at 7pm a big band came in with 3 female front singers and the whole band were absolutely loving what they do and that came across to the crowd! Great selection of foods and craft beers and gins! Need more like it !!

πλατεία προσεγμένη

πλατεία με το άγαλμα του ναυάρχου Φράνκλιν μέσα σε συντριβάνι. η πλατεία στην άκρη της έχει μια μεγάλη σκακιέρα και το κουφάρι μιας φάλαινας σε σχηματισμό και στην άλλη το πηγάδι των ευχών. βρίσκεται λίγα λεπτά από το λιμάνι.

Come on a Friday night

By day this is a quiet haven in the CBD but on Friday night's there is a Hawker style market with food stalls and music. It was unfortunately a bit rainy when i was there but the atmosphere was still good. on a sunny night it would be brilliant.

Lovely water features and sculpture

I catch the bus from the side of this square but don’t often walk through... had a walk today and enjoyed the new sculpture and seating and there is even a piano in one corner.
